Cultivating the Spokane Market

Stadium upgrades would probably be an easier sell, if we could fill the stadium we have to capacity on a more regular basis. One way to do this would be to get greater penetration in the Spokane market.

How can we do that?

I'm certain this is not the first time this has been discussed, and I know historically we've played some games at Joe Albi to attempt this. However, now more than ever, I'm a big believer we want to bring Spokane to the campus, not the games to Spokane.

Here's one trial balloon to shoot at. I'll admit up front that this is probably not thought through all the way. It may not pan out under scruntiny, but I feel compelled to make an attempt.

Initially, I'm thinking revenue nuetral. In otherwords increase attendendance, and just cover costs, not necessarily raise revenue. I think that comes later when you've established a larger fan base. Of course more fans would mean more consessions and EWU gear sales.

I'm thinking all of the 11 GSL high schools are pretty close to within 25 miles of Cheney. So what if we offer $20 best available seats on the goeags web site that includes the right to ride a shuttle to and from the games for free. At the time you buy the tickets you get the best available seat, any section. We'd have two shuttle runs. One from the east, and one from the north. Both shuttles start about 2 or 2 1/2 hours before kick off and have 5 or 6 stops at each of the high schools on the way to the game. You show your ticket to the driver when you board, and that's all you need. After the game the buses make the same return route. I'm guessing we'd need to charge about double that for the Montana game, because of ticket demand.

Would we need to charge more than $20? Would this increase interest in Spokane?

Sounds like a good plan. This is something people have been trying to figure out for 20+ years. I think the area in which we would make the most immediate gains is in marketing. I think we've done a poor job in that area in the past. I think the red turf was a brilliant idea, personally, because even if it's been done before, it's something that makes a game day experience in Cheney different. We will need to make more bold decisions like that if we are going to continue down the road to being a premier FCS team.

IMO, the situation is in Cheney is more of a "build it and they will come" type scenario......with our current facilities we can't expect to get the type of crowds we need on a consistent basis. We need to improve what we have so that people will view the program in a different light rather than "that school that plays in that little stadium", if you know what I mean. Our teams do their part by winning year after year - time for the boosters and administration to step up their game, too.

..and how much would it cost to level the hill behind the upper parking lot and add some parking. People might be more inclined to come to a game in Cheney if they didn't have to park up to a mile away on Washington to get to the stadium.

Couldn't cost that much. Parking has been an issue for some time now, and will have to be part of any serious discussion about future renovations/expansions to the Stadium.

Freebird has a good, solid idea. Why have people been taking 20 yrs. to figure it out. This plan would not cost that much. Are their busses available? Who can get the ball rolling? Are there any other areas around Spokane that we could send a bus? Has anyone approached the AD about this? What would stop it from happening? Are there any alumni on here that could help see this through?
Freebird, keep this alive.

The devil is always in the details, but I was thinking we'd just partner with the transit district for "Express" buses on a special game day route. We'd use their buses and their drivers and pay a negotiated rate. There are probably some issues to work out with the school districts if we use there parking lots as park and rides, so to speak.

That being said, I would think reasonable people could work this out to the benefit of all.
