I posted this question a while back... but a bit of Eastern trivia for you:

Does anyone know the other two finalist nicknames for Eastern when Eagles was selected to replace Savages?

I know. I tried to do a search and couldn't find it out there, so I'm curious who else might know. I wouldn't want this little gem of information lost to history. But before I post it, I want to see if anyone actually has any idea.

You didn't look hard enough, Dopa!
Badgers & Lakers -
Eagles won by a 52% vote.

Damn, how weird that the news came from a Florida newspaper! Don't know how I missed it in a search, but I usually use Bing instead of Google.

I would have loved the nickname Badgers.

Savages has a nice ring too. ;-)
It does. It's too bad that in this PC world it's no longer acceptable. Maybe we could switch back to Savages, but with a PC mascot? What about the Eastern Washington Savage Eagles?

Regardless, how the hell did Lakers and Badgers make the final cut? Were all EWSC students on drugs? :?

I don't know about that...

Once an Eagle, always a Savage. Or is it the other way around? Many of our best boosters that established the foundation many of us continue to build on were Savages. The Savages were the first Eastern football team to play for a national title in 1967 under legendary college and high school coach Dave Holmes.

We will see at least two players from that team in the tailgate and at the game Saturday. EWU has a great football tradition and Coach Baldwin has done a masterful job of including past players and coaches in our recent success. The pregame radio interview with EWU legend and former Philadelphia Eagle Bob Picard this past Saturday was just outstanding. I think he came here as a Savage and left as an Eagle.

Ummmm...there are way more badgers around these parts than eagles including one that's a lake. Speaking of lak(ers)...Badger, Williams, Chapman, Bonnie, Rock, Amber, Hog Canyon, Fishtrap, Medical, West Medical, Silver, North Silver, Clear, Granite, Meadow, Fish...might have something to do with that choice. :kisswink:

Dopa: Google is 1000x Berger than Bing.

Eagles is my favorite out of those three but Badgers and Lakers aren't too bad. Could be the Billikens...

SE in answer to your question: Regardless, how the hell did Lakers and Badgers make the final cut? Were all EWSC students on drugs? Why yes we were...

And Clawman, no making fun of the Anteaters...my high school in Portland are the AArdvarks. GO AARDVARKS!!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being the Eagles. I have very much embraced it.

That said, I NEVER would have voted for it. I would have hated all of those choices. Eagles are not exactly original. In fact, 61 other colleges/universities have the same name. That makes it the most common name at the college level. Now, it's a good name, but I would have opted for something a little more unique.

When you hear:
Crimson Tide
Tar Heels
Boilermakers
Scarlet Knights
Terrapins
Horned Frogs
Demon Deacons

You know who is being talked about. Eagles, not so much.

I think the flying eagle logo is probably the best college logo I have ever seen. I have some friends who had never heard of EWU and said the same thing, so I don't think it's just bias. Of course, I'm a little biased about Swoop. I've never seen a better looking eagle/bird mascot at any level.

Speaking of unoriginal names, what's with DI Washington?

Eagles (1st most common)
Bulldogs (3rd most common)
Cougars (4th most common)
Huskies

 Maybe your HS principal was still high from college years. Must have sounded fun at the time
