D1 Transfer Season Firing Up

oldrunner said:
I saw that yesterday. He is a good pick up for the Jacks. You are right, there is no way but up. I'm not sure if he will be able to play this year, but he surely will be an impact player for the Jacks. He is on his third school, so there are some questions about him that need to be answered. However, there is no question that he has D1 talent.

He will sit out this season per transfer rules, as far as I know. He originally committed to U Colorado but never played there. Colorado wanted him to wait a year and reclassify but he chose not to before choosing Loyola.

Kinda shocked that Jesse Wade has decided to transfer from Gonzaga and there hasn't been any mention of him possibly coming to Weber. Local kid, who has great handles, and can really shot the ball.

I wonder if the missionary legs got him cut at Gonzaga? I noticed that they also signed at least one 4 star PG at Gonzaga. I wonder if that had something to do with it. Jesse was quite dynamic in HS but didn't get offered by BYU or Utah. There is certainly more to this story. :coffee:

I saw today that Geno Crandall from North Dakota was on that list. We don't play them next year so it doesn't affect us but that's a big blow for them. He is a dang good player I wonder if he is a grad transfer

I read that he is indeed a grad transfer. Somebody will pick him up. There are always teams scrambling around for players late into the summer.

Wade, on the other hand, will have 4 years to complete 3 years of eligibility. He will probably have to sit a year, unless there are some other extenuating circumstances. :coffee:

Wade might be best heading to a JUCO for a year or two. Could be his best chance of working his way back onto a major program. As for our last grant. I have my theories. I know that Randy has an option, but if that guy goes a different direction, I think Randy has an opinion on how he will use that last grant for next year.

Jesse Wade? He is a Dave Rose type player. So, if BYU doesn't have any available spots, he will end up at UVU, if he is DI. I say Dave Rose because the kid can shoot lights out, but is sketchy on the defensive end of the court.

It is too bad, but I suspect Randy will only have 12 guys on grant again this Fall.

I think that everyone is remembering Jesse Wade from his senior year at Davis High. That was over three years ago and only has a minimal amount of relevance now. He played very little at GU, so we don't have a lot to go on except that they cut him loose. He may be very good and GU simply has better guys, or he could have lost a step or two while on his mission. We just don't know. I'm sure that he will get a chance somewhere. It could even be at Weber, we don't know.

Over the years, I have seen a lot of return missionaries compete at Utah schools. Some lose speed and athleticism, some lose their desire to compete, some lose their shooting touch, some lose it all, and every once in a while a few will come back the same or better. Those are the rare ones. Most need a year or two to get back to anything close to where they were before. Does that mean coaches should not sign potential missionaries? Of course not, all recruits are brought in on their potential anyway, so they are all a gamble. We just need to remember that things change over two years and lower our expectations on their return. We also need to cut these kids and coaches some slack when things don't work out. :coffee:

There seems to be a little less on the transfer list this year than last. I wonder if it has anything to do with the transfer rules changing this fall. I also wonder if there will be a significant increase next year.

I agree with you Olds, that it is hard for these missionaries to come home and get back into it. I hope that the two we have this year will be able to do it, but it definitely takes time and a coach who believes in the process. Regarding Jesse Wade: my AAU and college connections tell me he was doing quite well at Gonzaga, but then had a shoulder injury which put him behind. He worked his way back to playing well, but by then (mid-season) he was out of the rotation. At the college level, the mistakes you can make are minimal to keep your spot, and they started recruiting lots of guys in his same position, so he couldn't see a place for himself long-term there. I'm sure Jesse will announce his new school soon. He'll have to sit out a year, but will prove that he belongs at the D1 level.

As for our two RMs, I've seen one of them play. The other was sitting out with leg issues. Spencer Johnson looked great. No missionary legs on him. He came back fit and ready to go. He plays with confidence and a maturity that is not usually seen in first year players. He may be one of the few guys to come back better than ever. Tim Fuller may need a year to get back into any kind of playing shape. There is a lot of time between now and November, so you never know.

I agree with you about Jesse. The shoulder injury may be scaring coaches away. I wasn't aware of the injury, but it makes a lot more sense now. Somebody will take a chance on him and it may pay off big for them. He is a good kid and deserves a second chance at things. I'm pulling for him. :coffee:

I don't want to jinx anyone by making predictions, but I agree with you--Spencer Johnson is the real deal. His family moved to Utah when he was starting his sophomore year, which put him behind other kids as far as recruiting in Utah. That's why he became available to Weber--the bigger schools had already offered the number of guard slots they had available. Like I do with all D1 recruits in Utah, I followed him closely through his HS and AAU career. From the 2016 class in Utah, he's not as athletic as Frank Jackson, but he is a better player overall. He's not as big or long as Yoeli Childs and Gavin Baxter, but he's better. He was the best player on his high school team, which included Thurl Bailey's son, Brendan. My predictions are worth as much as you pay for them, but everything I've seen from Johnson tells me he will have a highly successful college career at Weber. He has come back from his mission ready to go, hopefully things will work out for him.

Ok, I gotta admit that I completely went bonkers on my last post. Most of what I wrote I had heard from some AAU coaches, but that's not really fair to any of the guys since every guy and every situation is unique. It's really not fair for me to say that one player is better than another because no one knows how good any of these guys will be. Spencer Johnson is really good, and I hope he gets his chance to show it at Weber. All of the guys I listed from his same class (2016) are all very good, and time will tell how far they go. We can all say that at the highest levels, little things separate one guy from the next. Yoeli Childs went to the NBA combine, but his feedback wasn't what he wanted to hear, so he went back to BYU to work on those things. Gavin Baxter (BYU) just home from a mission. Brendan Bailey (Marquette) also just home from a mission. Frank Jackson (New Orleans Pelicans) making big money in the NBA. So, I'll just admit that I lost my mind for a second in making those predictions. It isn't fair to Spencer to put that on him, and it isn't fair to the other guys who are working hard to get as good as they can. Only time will tell.

Geno Crandall to Gonzaga. They are stacked.

Gonzaga says they try to get at least one grad transfer per year. Seems like more than that, but maybe I am mixing up the regular transfers with the grad transfers. That is a model that is starting to work for some programs.

802 transfers to date. Very similar to last years total. Over 120 of them have not found homes. Several 3 star guys in that list of players.... Makes you wonder?????

SUU just picked up a solid transfer, Jakolby Long, a 6'5'' SG who is rated a 3 or 4 star depending on what service you want to believe. Looks to me like he will have to sit out a year. Anyway, good for them. They seem to be hitting that market a lot lately. Maybe it will pan out for them. It hasn't so far.
