It wasn't his fault that we lost on a bad special teams snap against NAU the same year.

I know I picked just one of the games you listed, but this one was absolutely, 100% Scott Downing's fault. He's the one that called the stupid gimmick 2-point conversion play that NAU had already seen that day. We should have just lined up and kicked the extra point and gone to overtime like a sane team would have done. But no, we tried some gadget play 2-point conversion that had little-to-no chance of working and lost. It was one of the most boneheaded coaching decisions I've ever seen.

He made the exact opposite mistake at Weber this year, playing for overtime when we should've gone for the win in regulation.

This is Downing's problem, he's terrible on gameday. He's a great head coach Sunday-Friday, but he just can't get the job done on Satudays, as his 8-44 career record shows. Like I said earlier, he's a good assistant, but not cut out to be a head coach. There are plenty of football coaches like that, doesn't make them bad coaches, just bad head coaches.

It was NOT Scott Downing fault that we lost to Sac State 3 years ago on a hail-marry and it wasn't his fault we lost on a similar play to UC Davis two years ago. It wasn't his fault we lost on a Bryan Waggener fumble on the last second of the game two years ago. It wasn't his fault that we lost on a bad special teams snap against NAU the same year. It was NOT his fault Dylan Orms fumbled the game away against EW on Saturday.

I named a lot of games there (I'm sure I'm missing some too) where it was just dumb luck we lost. Some games like Weber this year and Sac State this year where he should shoulder the blame.

I'll be honest with everyone that I'm on the fence with Downing being fired. I like Peterson and that was a good hire. Our offense has improved and he can recruit. Same with Biddel. Lots of mixed emotions right now.

You make some good points right there, and who knows, if we would have had a few balls bounce our way things might be different right now. But, the other point I was trying to get across, is bad luck or not you have a 8-44 record and that doesn't warrent (at least in my opinion) you keeping your job. Downing seems like a good guy, but it just wasn't meant to be here at UNC.

Yes, we have had some really bad breaks and I'm not saying he isn't responsible for some loses. But if you consider just some of those games where we had a ball tip this way or tip that way, he has probably doubled his wins. Maybe the guy is just bad luck? I don't know. But you do have to consider how we've lost some games.

If we can win 2 or 3 out of the last 4 games, I wouldn't mind seeing him back. I would like to see how Peterson and Biddle can recruit. I think they'll do well. Peterson has a great pipe-line to schools in Texas. A place that's flooded with high school prep stars that get over looked.

Here's an idea: Let's make Peterson the head coach.

I would probably be okay with that.
