Does 2013 = Hot Seat for Sperbeck???

The past few seasons, Sperbeck has done just enough to keep his j-o-b. Looking at his overall track record, it doesn't stand out pleasantly. He's compiled a 30-37 record, which isn't too bad. During his watch, there hasn't been a post-season for the hornets. So, does Wanless light a match under Sperbeck's seat this season if production doesn't improve? I hope so.

More, I hope that Wanless has a list of names in his pocket. If I was the one to write that list, it would look like this:

Current HCs:
John Wristen of DII CSU-Pueblo
Wristen help build the reincarnated thunderwolves football program at Colo St- Pueblo. Since it's restart, the t-wolves have had consecutive winning seasons under Wristen. Further, he has DI experience having been an assistant or position coach at various FBS programs including Kentucky (under Rich Brooks) and UCLA.

Turk Schonert of UFL's Sac Mt. Lions
A HC that's already in the city. Being the semi-pro HC of the Mt. Lions, he will more than likely have established connections with the area's football programs. He has an extensive NFL career as QBC and OC. That combine with his UFL experience would be appealing to recruits.

Former HCs:
Paul Wulff
Wulff led a didn't have much success as Wazzu's HC, but did have at EWU. Which is why he was tabbed to lead the cougars. He's familiar with the BSC and the San Jack Valley. Plus, he's currently an O-asst. w/ the 49ers. His past history in the BSC, connections to the area and the NFL would be very appealing to recruits.

Pat Hill
He did good things at Fresno St. His tenure there did end on a mediocre note, but overall he was successful at a place where it is hard to be successful. He has established connections with local high schools coaches. He familiar with the area. He past success at the FBS level and connection to the NFL would be appealing to recruits.

He familiarity with the Cal State system would help with getting things done at Sac St.

Current Coordinators/Positions Coaches:
Kevin McGarry of SDSU
McGarry is currently the ST Coordinator and linebackers coach at SDSU. Since becoming ST Coor. at SDSU, The Aztecs' ST play have shown real improvement. The kicking game has gotten stronger, returners average respectable return yards and KO/Punts have been returned for TDs. Linebackers are definitely a strong point of the Aztec D. McGarry coached Miles Burris who was drafted by Raiders in the 2012 draft.

Prior to SDSU,He was the HC at the University of San Diego for eight seasons. He compiled a 42-38 record. Although only slightly above .500, it a good feat considering that torero football is a non-scholarship program. Also, USD puts academics before sports.

His development of SDSU's ST play can be very beneficial to hornet football. We're all aware of the woes with hornet ST play. His involvement in helping to turn around a poor performing Aztec team will also be of benefit to Sac St. Coming from another Cal State program, he would be knowledgeable with how to do things football wise in the CSU.

Fred Guiduci of SJSU
Like McGarry, Guidici is also a ST Coordinator. He's the ST Coordinator for the SJSU Spartans. Along with coordinating ST, he is also the running backs coach. Here again, is a coach that has first hand knowledge of ST play can help turn around that area for the hornets.

Does of us who follow DI football saw the miracle turn around season that the Spartans had last season. They finished the season ranked in the top 25 in both major polls. His involvement with last season's Spartan team could be beneficial to helping the hornets turn the corner and become BSC contenders.

Before SJSU, Guidici was he HC at NAIA Menlo College. According the archives on the Oaks Web site, he helped that program turn the page from losing upon becoming HC.

Like Hill and McGarry, his familiarity with the Cal State system would help with getting things done at Sac St.

While I'm not so sure it's time to hit the panic button with Sperbeck, your list is intriguing. One should NOT screw around with the idea of canning the coach unless one already has some sort of a rough-and-ready list to work off of (or already has a deal in place with someone in particular).

I'm intrigued by the idea of Wulff, which would incite feelings of rancor with fans in the Pac-NW (not necessarily a bad thing). It would be essentially a "coming home" of sorts for him, as his brother is in the Lodi area.

A couple I would also consider for the coordinator-sourced list (yes, I've mentioned them before) would be Mike Canales, OC and former acting HC at North Texas (Sun Belt) and Angus McClure, former run game coordinator at Buffalo/assistant HC at Sac/current DL coach at UCLA. I would also consider Jon Osterhout, but would like to see him get some time as a FCS coordinator first.

Mike Canales and Angus McClure definitely should definitely be on a list for possible next Sac St HC.

I would like to see Jon Osterhout gain some coordinator experience first. In comparison to McClure, McClure was the Run-game Coordinator at UB- equivalent to Co-OC. And his has been a both a coordinator and position coach at the highest level of college football.

8-4 and I am ok. Anything less should be cause for serious evaluation.

Sperbeck does have the team posting good APR, is competitive in most games now and stays clean. Based on who he replaced he has done wonders. But sometimes, people can only take a project so far. Stability is a plus too.

I hate be bearer of bad news, but this Staff has some serious issues. I have heard first hand from my son. They have completely broken his spirit and drive. He is leaving the team. It is that bad. Practice has no flow, the head trainer is a total jerk! Luckily I dont live in the Sac Area, I would be confronting some of these individuals directly! I will be surprised if this team wins with that staff.

That's bad news most definitely. Hopefully, you son hasn't given up on football completely. I hope he finds a school with a coaching staff that connects with him.

As far as Sperbeck and his staff, in the short period I've been following hornet football I've found it peculiar that some of his assistants have left for lateral positions or just quit.

Good luck to your son and you.

Sure this program isn't perfect, but no offense, sounds like your son is the one with the issues. I don't know if you had scholarship beef, an injury, etc. But if you're looking for your third program in the last few months, that says something, regardless of what you post here.

Well said.

Best of luck to your son LH9. It sucks to hear your son wasn’t a fit for this Hornet program but that’s the breaks.

Thanks SD and Golden, my son will continue to go to school at Sac, but he is done with football for this season.
It has been good to him, but when you trust a program to care for your child its pretty upsetting knowing that he could not get ice after blowing his hammy in the first practice with light stretching and then full speed (what coaching staff does that?)
The first night it happened, he had zero ice. Mind you, this injury happens around noon. 7 hours later,....NO ICE! Hammy requires Ice after sprain, tear (RICE-Rest, ICE, Compression, Elevation). Trainer locks door when players in meeting, only source of ice. Seems someone would have allowed him to get ice or leave some available. Not "might be some in the dorm".....and there was no ice in the dorm. Imagine how you would feel 500 miles away when you send your child up there trusting staff to look out for him. Especially with his transportation still parked in my driveway. I understand this program does not have the money like bigger programs, but there should be more dedication from staff other than just collecting a check.
Coaches are not bad people, but after playing for Rich Rodriquez and Calvin McGee(Coach of the Year 2012), this was a eye opening experience for both of us. This was not the only incident, just an example. All players are created equal at U of A and he would have stayed at Arizona, but the out of state tuition was not an option. I expected more I guess, going to a smaller program. It sounded good during recruitment at least. Should have been more of a personal experience but it was the opposite.

I wish your son the best, but that ice claim is ridiculous. The training staff has mountains of ice, much of it pre bagged for players after practice, not to mention the ice bath option.

He left for MSU. Yes MSU has a bigger bank account, but to leave for the same position within the same conference, you have to wonder about the chemistry. If I remember correctly, he quit first then landed at MSU.

I would not waste my time making ridiculous claims. The head trainer dude is not cool with players. Punches the clock and bounces. Staff below him put in work and attempts to get kids healthy. Starts at the top. (head trainer/ head coach?) My son was warned by other players not to even deal with his azz.....go directly to the other training staff. That was told to him on the first day! No sour grapes...it is what it is. It happened. When he pulled other hamstring a week later, the head trainer did not say one word to him. That's the way to keep a kids morale up.
Kinda funny players are constantly banged up there.....These are non-contact injuries. Sounds like lack of stretching and lack of a good head trainer. No hamstring injuries in past. Kid has balled out since 9 years old. 2 championship rings from High School

LH9,

Sorry to hear about your son leaving the team and/or any bad experiences you had with the Training Staff and or coaches. I wish him the best where ever he ends up playing.

I for one, know the trainers can be strict when working with the players but set pretty fair expectations for them. If your injured or need treatment you get their 2 hours before practice and get treatment, if you need to be held out they will let the coaches know and it is done. My son actually suffered a torn ligament in his foot a month before camp while doing some drills, the immediately diagnosed it as a lisfranc injury, and stablized the injury. That week I took him to see his Dr and he said wasn't sure so they sent him to a orthopedic surgeon who verifed the injury and performed the surgery the next day. If it wasn't for their quick diagnosis he could have suffered more injury to the foot....8 weeks post surgery the training staff works with him daily to rehab so they can hopefully get him back for week 5 or 6. So I have the upmost respect for them....

I appreciate the wishes OG67. Great to hear your son had a good experience with the trainers. It seemed the one dude did not like him from the start for whatever reason. He is going to sit out this year. He has 4 years of eligibility remaining.

Good Luck to your son!.....Week 5 or 6 is the goal to return :)

Thanks...yep still waiting for screws to be removed from foot...

You may want to check on eligibility rules...if he was a full time student last year at AZ then his NCAA clock has started, meaning he has 5 years to play 4 seasons. So if he redshirted last year then he is technically a redshirt freshman this year and only has this year plus 3 more seasons after this one. If he gray shirted last year (meaning he took less than 12 units, and didn't practice with the team) then his clock hasn't started yet.

I am not expert but am 99% sure that is the rule in a nutshell.

Good Luck and thanks for the well wishes.

You are correct.....3 seasons after this one.
