Dominquez and Morrison arrested

This is not good. Quoting the Oregonian's story at: http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/04/psu_players_held_in_connection.html: "Portland State University athletic officials confirmed this morning that Vikings men's basketball players Jeremiah Dominguez and Scott Morrison are in a Mexican jail after an incident over spring break in Cabo San Lucas.

"We are aware of an altercation that Scott and Jeremiah were involved with and that they have a hearing today," sports information director Mike Lund said. Vikings officials were not aware of any charges.

Dan Meagher, the father of the alleged victim, says the incident happened Saturday, the victim identified one of the players as his attacker through photos and that the players could be charged with attempted murder.

Kyle Meagher, 23, of Michigan was beaten about the head with a blunt instrument, suffered a broken jaw and other injuries. He was left in a street, where a cab driver found him, the father said. Dominguez and Morrison were later arrested outside a club in Cabo on Sunday.

Kyle Meagher, 23, a student at Lansing (Mich.) Community College, was on internship in Cabo. The father says Kyle's jaw is wired shut, but that he did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

Dominguez and Morrison were key players on the Vikings team that recently made the school's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Dominguez was the West Coast Conference player of the year."

Wow guys...Im in shock. Hope this isn't true, but if it is, what a setback for your program after all that was accomplished.

I'm having a hard time believing this. What are the chances something like that would be printed today of all days.

I'm of the same opion..

How do they already have quotes from the alleged victim?

Also, I'm no lawyer, but wouldn't it be assault with a deadly weapon rather than attempted murder?

Plus, Morrison isn't going to use a 'blunt object' to fight someone. He's going to throw those Canadian Haymakers like he did on the court against the Griz three years ago. ;-)

No joke. The AP is now confirming the story at http://www.oregonlive.com/sportsflash/index.ssf?/base/sports-5/1207085063161040.xml&storylist=orsports and I really doubt they would report it if it were a joke.

Ian also has a blog post up about this on OLive. F-ing sh-t!

All of the local news stations are confirming.. Not what we need and especially not what the city, university, players, or fans need especially in a rising star program.

Here's what KGW.com is saying...

"Two Portland State basketball players are in a Mexican jail after an altercation in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas but have not been charged, U.S. consular officials confirmed Tuesday night. Lorena Blanco, spokeswoman for the consulate in Tijuana, said a list of attorneys has been sent to the families of PSU players Jeremiah Dominguez and Scott Morrison.

She said Morrison, not Dominguez, beat up Kyle Meagher, 23, of Michigan. "Dominguez was the not the one who beat him up but he ran away from police and that's what got him in trouble ... Police threw him on the ground and punched him because he resisted arrest," she told The Associated Press."

This is very, very sad.

I don't believe they are capable of this. I could believe they got in a bar fight, but that's it. We'll see what happens.

Everyone is human and sometimes people make mistakes, especially young people.

I can't wait to here this from Coach Bone and the players themselves, what did the victim do to egg them on? And why Mexico..... :P

Gotta love the BSC

UNC - Stabbing
MSU - Players getting in trouble left and right
UM - Everything

And now this....

Well here is a different story:

Sure hope their versions right.

Could this be a prejudice act by Mexican authorities? It might be a possibility.

This just in and it sure paints a different picture:

http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/04/father_says_psu_players_were_f.html

The father of Portland State basketball player Scott Morrison said today that there's no merit to the accusations his son and a teammate faced in the beating of a man in Mexico.

"It's pretty simple. Nothing happened," Alex Morrison said from Vancouver, B.C., where Scott and a relative who'd come to his aid in Cabo San Lucas were expected to land later today. "What we do know -- and the only thing anybody knows -- is that Kyle Meagher got himself beat up."
IGNACIO MARTNEZ/ASSOCIATED PRESSScott Morrison hides his face Tuesday in the jail in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He and teammate Jeremiah Dominguez were released from the jail later that night after being held in connection with the beating of a man in the resort town.
Scott Morrison and Jeremiah Dominguez, both 22, had gone to Cabo on spring break when they found themselves in jail accused in an attack on 23-year-old Meagher of Lansing, Mich., who was hospitalized with a broken jaw.

Morrison and Dominguez have since been released from custody. A third teammate on the trip, Brian Curtis, was not implicated in the case and has been unavailable to comment since returning to Portland late Tuesday.

"Our focus right now is to get our son home safe and have some opportunity to sit down as a family and gather ourselves," said Alex Morrison, whose ex-wife's husband, Greg Granholm, flew to Cabo to help retrieve Morrison.

"Scott and Jeremiah didn't do anything, weren't involved in anything, weren't involved in any fight," Alex Morrison said. "They happened to be in Cabo. As far as I can tell, that's the only thing I can tell you that happened.

"People need to hear from them.

"I have spoken to people who visited (Meagher) in the hospital. We all feel sorry for Kyle, whatever happened to Kyle and whatever trouble he got himself into ... but we don't know who beat him up."

Both Scott Morrison and Dominguez have not returned messages throughout the day.

Portland State officials were dealing with conflicting reports.

"I'm not sure what to believe," said basketball coach Ken Bone, speaking from San Antonio. "I've heard from (assistant) Tyler Geving and he told me that he talked with Jeremiah last night and Jeremiah said, 'Coach, we got set up on this deal and it's a joke.'

"Like I told Tyler, 'Well, I've heard of those stories before, but it's just ... it's hard to believe both sides of it.' It's hard to believe that someone gets accused of something like that if there wasn't some (hard evidence). Both stories are really hard to believe. I don't know if it's somewhere in between or what. And maybe we'll never know. I have not talked to any of the players."

Geving said Dominguez would be "back in the States today. He's going to go hang out with his family and get away."

Although the athletic department is holding off releasing any official statements while it gathers more information, athletic director Torre Chisholm said, "The coaches have talked to the athletes and ... information is still changing fairly quickly. What if it turns out to be a case of mistaken identity? As it keeps changing, we're trying to figure out where everything is."

And don't forget the other Big Sky gems from this decade:

NAU - Convicted felons on the MBB team
ISU - Football team tried to kill the basketball team (I don't think anything will top that)
PSU - The current Dominguez/Morrison issue

That just leaves EWU, Weber, & Sac. Looking at Sac State's recent efforts in the big 3 sports, they might be better off adding more thugs.

No real surprise here, Bone has suspended them pending the outcome of the investigation. The only one it might affect is Dominguez of course. This is something he really had to do whether or not something happened because, as has been pointed out, such incidents in the US could likely be felonies.

Dominguez is being charged with drunkenness in public, I don't know how heavy the extent of the suspension is for that, hopefully nothing to bad.
