Jeeeez....no kidding. Looks like in this case, DB wasn't so much a description of his position on the field as his position in life. Hey, asshole: Many of us enjoy having crazy nights out, but there's no need to bring a firearm to the bar (let alone pull it on the cops :ohno: ). Look how well that plan of attack and being "hard" worked for Plaxico Burress!

From the article: "In addition to his distinguished football career at Washington, Gayton's father was the first African American FBI agent from Washington State after his appointment by J. Edgar Hoover in 1963. He later went on to a career at Boeing and served as the Commissioner of the Washington State Department of Employment Security for Governor Gary Locke."

Brutal. My guess is he's off the team at this point. Good riddance!

Going slightly off-topic, but you pull a gun on the cops and get released on a $750 bond? That's like a disorderly conduct level of bond, not felony use of a firearm (which, if the information is accurate, is what he'd likely be charged with). Either this kid already caught the break of his life, or the article exaggerates the crime.

He is fortunate to be alive ... most people (drunk or otherwise) who draw a weapon on the police are fired on.

It didn't take long for Coach Baldwin to respond (most appropriately):

"As soon as EWU Football Coach Beau Baldwin found out about the incident Friday morning Gayton was kicked off the football team. Coach Beau Baldwin will make a statement at 4 p.m. Friday at Roos Field."

Hannah, lucky indeed. How many times have you heard of it going the other way? Extremely poor choice. Glad to see Coach Baldwin and company act so swiftly and decisively.

With the high-caliber of guys we have on our team, we have no use for someone who makes this kind of decision. :ohno:

Kudos to Baldwin and staff. There is no room for that kind of crap on this team...it's not Missoula! I feel sorry for his parents, especially his father. Hope he gets it figured out!

What difference would even a 10,000 bond make? The kid is already paying a HUGE price. Isn't is amazing how one stupid move can change ones life.
Someone must have had an idea of his mindset if he owned a handgun and had it with him in college and he went through the motions to buy a State of Washington License to carry concealed pistol. $60.00
I too feel sorry for the parents. They sound like upstanding citizens, and don't deserve this.

OK, the kid blew a 0.25 and was an idiot but WTF does the above mean?! I've had a concealed weapons permit and a pistol(s) since I was his age. Geez, I guess I've been a nut job all these years and never knew it...

Go back to the Occupy Cheney rally and leave the 2nd Amendment argument out of it...

I seen higher bonds for first time DUIs than for this crime. It just seems weird overdrinking and driving a car can get you a higher bond than overdrinking, illegally carrying a firearm, and then pointing it at police officers.

It doesn't take a genius to see one crime is generally pretty small while the other is pretty substantial, yet the law isn't viewing it as such.

sad to see this happen at EWU and I feel bad for his parents. just goes to show you how one really poor decision can effect a kids future. Hopefully he can learn from his mistakes and move forward in life.

Don't see "nut job" anywhere in the quote.
The description is exactly as it reads on my permit. The Washington permit requires only 60.00, fingerprint, and background check.
Occupy Cheney??????
Second amendment???????
What the hell does that have to do with it?

I just don't get where he was going with this, packing heat into a Cheney Pub? Gang violence?--NOT! Just trying to be cool or really drunk and said I'm going out and taking my 9mm to be a bad ass. Hmmmm, nice life choice, but VERY costly.

Well he did get into a fight before hand, and being a DB, he's not the biggest of guys, so I'm guessing he felt the need to compensate and was too dumb to realize that even with a CWP, you can't carry in a bar. Just all around piss-poor decision making. Love the no-nonsense approach by Baldwin and EWU though, I commend them! :notworthy:

Judging by your past and present signature lines I was guessing Dozy mis-read you too.

Kudo's to the Baldwin in taking care of this quickly and decisively.

As mentioned before, I hope the kid learns from this mistake although I can't blame him for packing heat on the mean streets of Cheney. :ohno:

I hope he can get some help and get his life back on track in the right direction. Never want to see a kid throw away such a great opportunity. My heart goes out to his parents as well. Pray for some healing there too.

My hats off to the coaching staff for their swift action on this. I'm impressed. I've always felt if coaches take swift action in situations like this it prevents things from getting worse.
In many cases, people complain about "due process" and "innocent until proven guilty." People need to remember that college football, or all athletics for that matter are not a democracy. It isn't the U.S. justice system.
I think Coach Bohl said it best when they had some problems at NDSU. Quick summary....in 2009 some players were arrested for being in a shoplifting ring at Best Buy. The two players involved were immediately kicked off the team. This came after 10 other players were suspended or kicked off the team in less than a year. A lot of people thought NDSU was going downhill and wouldn't recover. A reporter asked Bohl about kicking the players off just for being arrested, and mentioned something to the effect of aren't they innocent until proven guilty? Bohl said, look they'll get their day in court, but what everyone needs to realize is that playing on this team is a privilege we need to take care of it and move forward as a team. (not an exact quote, but that's the gist of it.)
Again, my hats off to the coaching staff for doing the right thing.

So I watched the video...he never "pointed" the gun at the cops. To me it looks like he was pulling it out to show them he had it. Don't get me wrong, he should never have been carrying while he was out drinking and the reaction by the coaches was justified, but the initial reports of him drawing on the cops appear to be exaggerated. Just my two cents...

Exactly right, Ranger. It looks like the cops showed up with the kid already holding the gun. Still an amazingly stupid thing to do.
