Eastern vs. Montana St. Game Day Thread

Same crap against 3 DL that had speed. Pulling the tackles on the backside of the play and the DE runs it down from behind. Happened against Montana, Weber and now MSU. Just an observation...

You can’t pin this one on the defense. Holding a team to 23 points and a -2 TO margin should be good enough to win a ball game. I know we’ve played a couple of really good defenses, but that does not completely explain the poor execution by the offense. Just mind-boggling.

We’ll probably have to win both remaining games to make the playoffs with as tight as the field is in the Big Sky right now.

This team seems to lack the fire it had early on in the season. I don’t know what’s going on but they have another tough game next weekend and they have a lot to figure out.

So on the punt that put Eastern on the 3.... Special teams finds another way to F it up. that ball needed to be fielded... every time. Also, I've seen that run to the right on third and short several times this season and every time it has been run down from the backside as the OL ole's those blocks to pull or block down right. It's a bad concept but at crutch time it's just tragic. btw, Eag's ran off the edge 3 times on that last TD effectively and it was there all game. Kudos to the defense. They played their asses off, stayed focused and kept it close...

MSU has a damn fine team this year and that back they have is sensational. Give them credit. The margin for error in these type of games is so tight that you can’t really have a day where the Offense fails to produce the way it did today. The good news is that we can and should win out and still make the playoffs, albeit not with a seed.

“Fire” maybe, or maybe not. But they definitely seem to lack focus. I cant account for why the offense is playing so poorly.

Another couple of things. A) That punt should have been fielded rather than banking on it going into the endzome, and B) Why punt the ball away with 2 minutes left when you know your defense most likely is not going to be able to prevent them from running the clock out? Screw it, just go for it there. I’d rather go down swinging than watching them run the ball down our necks to finish the game. Just lame.

give up 23 pts and lose at home. confused as to what aaron has to say about the embarrassing play calling and decision making.

Our Defense was there, start to finish. Good job Defense! Offense, where's the "we're gonna get yards and touchdowns spirit" of the early half of the season? Early season, there was noticeable winning offensive confidence even between plays. The Eagle offensive line hasn't been the "open a hole-protect the QB" that was there earlier? Sad Boston's touchdown reception resulted in a major penalty instead of six or seven points. Our offense showed some of the determined Eagle magic after the fumble recovery, but lacked the continuing exploitive, now onto victory of past years. Are we no longer a come from behind offense? Has
the play-calling gone to the well once, twice, thrice, too many times lately? Great see Tamarick Pierce well and playing again. Go Eags! Two more games! Two more wins!

EB3 needs to take over this game now.
I wonder if coaches are so fearful of him getting hurt so he is reluctant to run and slides at hint of getting tackles that he is protected but we lose.

you have an off. like ours and 2 min left and its 3rd and 2 and you fricken punt it knowing all msu has to do is get a 1st down on a worn our ewu defense to win? and you try an end sweep(losing a couple of yards) when running down the middle had been working so instead of going for it you punt to lose?? wtf!!! chicken shit...if you're going to lose the most important game of the season at least go out fighting! eb3 needed to run in this game and you don't use this weapon?? weak sauce, now what? the defense played really good!! i'm baffled clawman, great question

The wheels have come off the bus. We're in a lot of trouble. I go so far as to say we lost to Montana State two weeks ago when we lost of Weber. All of the problems persisted, but the shocking thing was how the offense simply can't make plays they routinely made a month ago. I'm not sure where to go from here.

We need a fresh rethink on how we're attacking the game offensively. I thought Barriere was OK today... he had a lot of drops (again) that weren't his fault. But the OL and receivers were just atrocious. We completely abandoned our wide receiver scheme package in the second half after two drops on the opening 2nd half drive, one drop by Limu-Jones and one by Merritt. Had we made those two plays, it might have changed the complexion of the game. When we didn't make those plays, we pretty much jettison one of our best philosophies from the gameplan. Not being able to make it work allowed MSU to load up the middle of the field and blitz because we never offered a short option to get away from the blitz. I was shocked we didn't incorporate our TEs in the the game at all, and I'm surprised we keep using our 11s personnel in short yardage situation instead of bringing in the 22 package (3rd and 1 on our last drive with 11s personnel and a slow developing run from shotgun was a bad plan for the down and distance).

Defense was decent. We gave up way too many yards and first downs. But that's not a surprise. The film we had from Weber showed everyone how to beat us... bang away with your backs and soften us up. Infanse ran for 217 today and was the best player on the field by far.

It'll be a tough slog from here. There's no use lingering on the losses because we still can achieve some success this year if we beat UC Davis. We need to get these confidence issues out of our psyche and get back to playing loose and with a sense of urgency. Coaching will be huge these week; we need to improve confidence and get back to believing we will beat UC Davis.
