Eastern Washington vs Portland State Thread

Just plain different
Portland State looked like a different team Saturday as they rolled to a 47-36 win over Eastern Washington

Where has this execution been all season? Take away the one touchdown EWU scored from the 1 yard line, and even the defense looked good. Aside from the 2 interceptions, Shead didn't seem to be in very good position. Given his size and hands, maybe they should give him a shot on offense.

I think we have to give Hubel the job on a permanent basis. He may not have the strongest arm, but he finds the right guys on third downs, and will get PSU some publicity in this offense.

How about D'ambrosio? The new go-to-guy?

Been stew'in over this the past 24 hours. Yes, the Vike's played MUCH better against EWU, but there were still some big mistakes made...the high snap, broken coverages, etc...fortunately, EWU wasn't able to capitalize and shift the momentum. It's good that the guys could show that they're better than a powerhouse team like EWU, but there's still much work to be done this week. Drew & the receivers need to get in sync to reduce the overthrows, and miscommunications. Even though 44 for 73 is nice, there were easily another dozen or so "gimme's" that were lost.
Don't take this as raining on anyone's parade. I'm EXTREMELY proud of the team and the game they played Sat. Drew stepped up and showed what the R&G can do once our motor gets running. With a rough start this season, it would have been easy to let that get in their head and mess up the rest of the year, yet they put it behind, came out and played the game they've been capable of since day one...a great sign of the whole team's strength and committment. A big hat tip to the D who've been struggling with controlling the run, and stepped up to play a hard-hitting game against a power offense. Very nicely done.

But they need to put this win in the drawer, get back out this week, work hard and get ready for NAU. (Remember..."Perfect Practice Makes Perfect Play"...make every movement count this week...every step, every motion...condition yourself to move "Perfectly" and it will happen naturally in the game.)

Nice win, Vikes.

Hubel shreds EWU's pass defense

What impressed me about this game was to remind me that football is a game of inches and how important the advantage in turnovers is.

EWU should have had at least two interceptions that I can remember. PSU missed a couple of long bombs by inches and missed a TD completion. This game could have gone to either a EWU win or PSU could have scored 10 to 20 more points.

We still have a lot to work on with some tough teams on the schedule yet. Future opponents are going to defense better than EWU. We just have to step up.

Good point. Lot of missed opportunities. One thing I really take away from this is that the defense played one hell of a first half. EWU really only should have had 9 points at the half since that snap over the head of Danny should have been kicked out of the endzone for a safety.

Are the overthrown passes a result of the QB juggle? Or are we just a fraction of a second off on our passes?

One concern is that we gave up 15 points in the 4th quarter, and one of our problems has been defending in the 2nd half.

NAU on the road is going to be a tough one...
