Eastern Washington vs Portland State - Thread

or land of minivans and soccer moms:)
Sounds like the suburbs all right. All just temporary, mind you. The Beaverton-Hillsboro area boasts quite a number of golf courses, fishing and hunting venues, shopping malls and quality restaurants amid Silicon Forest greenways. Retirement Living lists Hillsboro as a top-10 spot for retirement. And it is also a great place to raise a family with some of the best school districts in the state. The area population is probably around 200,000 (about the size of Spokane) with Hillsboro as the state's 5th largest city (90,000). The Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation facilities are pretty amazing. So is Hillsboro's latest creation, Ruud Bridge Park. The only problem is it may rain on game day.

Lol I know. I live in sw pdx...I'm actually looking forward to the game being at hillsboro stadium so I can actually tailgate this year.

I hate to say this but this will most likely be another close game and hopefully EWU can keep the magic rolling. It is going to be strange seeing the Viks run the ball again after the Glanville era. How is the Viks on defense this year? I am sure glad that we have already played against the pistol (Nevada) so hopefully we can be prepared. Here's to a good game and hopefully both teams can remain somewhat injury free. Go Eagles!!!

The Spokane metro area is over 650,000..........not really sure the Hillsboro comparison is that valid. :D

I expect this to be another close one in the BSC this weekend, with perhaps a slight advantage going to PSU since you're at home. I think it will basically come down to who commits fewer TO's and penalties. We are somewhat banged up on the offensive/defensive lines, so that could be a factor as well. Also, TJ has probably not been at 100% since the Nevada game, but he still seems to find a way to produce.

PSU seems to have shored up the talent gap that has existed between these two teams (see last year's Beat-Down on the Sound) and so this game should not be a blow out either way. PSU has a good team this year and if we don't clean some things up prior to this weekend I could easily see us finishing on the wrong end of this one.

Let's hope for a good, clean, game with no/limited injuries.

Check the signs coming into Hillsboro, the population is over 90,000 now. Washington County, of which Hillsboro is the county seat, has a population of 525,000. The area to which I referred earlier was the combination of Beaverton-Hillsboro, the immediate and surrounding area have about 200,000 (Hillsboro 90,000, Beaverton 86,860, surrounding area of Bethany, Glencoe, North Plains, etc. at least 25,000 more).
The Spokane MSA, more accurately, has a 2009 population of 468,684 according to the OMB (I invite you to check the validity of these numbers). :D Cheney has a full-time population of 10,500 with EWU students adding another 7,200 when classes are in session. This is a small college town, less than half the size of Carbondale, Illinois, probably quite rural. I heard the place is has a lot of charm, though, especially the campus. :geek:

Wasn't arguing the population of Cheney. Those numbers sound about right - EWU's enrollment is a little over 11,500 - the students that don't live on Campus or in town commute from Spokane. And it is very much a small college town, which most people like - but the fact that you can get on I-90 and be in downtown Spokane in a little over 15 minutes gives it a much less secluded feel than someplace like Pullman.

The reason that the population of the actual City of Spokane isn't larger is because there are large portions (entire Spokane Valley) that do not want to be incorporated due to tax reasons, or whatever. I got the figures I quoted from the below.

"Spokane's Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is expected to be officially combined with Kootenai County by the Federal Government and the U.S. Office of Management and Budget once the 2010 Census is tallied. The new MSA is likely to be named "Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Metropolitan Area". It is expected that by that time, the area will have upwards of 650,000, and this change will occur no later than 2013"

Yep, yep, yep. That area is really growing. The nature of the students' relationship to the campus, that they commute in from Spokane is interesting. Whereas PSU students will commute from all over the metro area, from the city and the suburbs, to Portland's downtown University District is kind of the flip-side to the EWU student experience: going out from the city to a semi-rural town. I never knew that.

EWU reports its fall 2010 enrollment as 10,750. It continues to grow.

It is just a feeling, but I feel if the members of this conference want to catalyze their clout-perception to the nation, the individual member teams would do well to schedule games like

Eastern Washington vs. Eastern Michigan

Montana State vs. Iowa State

Portland State vs. Kent State

Montana vs. Wyoming

N Arizona vs. N Illinois

N Colorado vs. S Illinois

Idaho State vs. Murray State

Sac State vs. San Jose State

Weber State vs. Bowling Green State

Those are full-time students, yeah. With part-times it's a little over 11,500. PSU must have something in the area of 30k with part time students.

Will the Vikings be playing in Hillsboro again next season, or are will the renovations to PGE be complete in time for football season?

We'll be back at <former PGE Park> next season. The naming rights are up for sale, so it' most likely won't be PGE Park next season.

Civic Stadium has a nice ring to it don't you think? :)

How're your attendance figures in Cheney?

As far as the stadium name is concerned, we could revert back to Civic Stadium (since it is city-owned), but in this day and age, we may end up seeing another organization with naming rights attached to it.

Close to 12,000 for the Montana game (standing room only). Good thing about that one was around 3/4 were Eastern fans. for a change (first game on the re-dedicated Roos Field.) Around 7600 for the NAU game, a little less than that for the Sac State game. Those are the only games we have played in Cheney thus far, with SUU and Idaho State to go - figures should be around the same for those. So all in all, could be better but something to build on. There's more improvements planned in the future (including a replay jumbo-tron for the football and basketball facilities) so hopefully this will increase the game day experience to get more people coming out to games. Always been somewhat of a struggle getting large crowds here on a consitent basis with crappy WSU an hour and a half down the road, but I'm sure you guys are all too familiar with that with UO and OSU.

Don't be surprised if it's named after Alaska Airlines since they're the title sponsor for the Timbers...or even Burgerville, another major Sponsor. There has always been speculation the Rose Garden will become the Wells Fargo Rose Garden....maybe they have an interest in owning the rights to Civic Stadium
