Greetings all,

Tech fan checking in. To the poster above, it appears you spoke with an incredibly uninformed Tech fan. The consensus among most fans is 5-win team and a December coaching search. Vegas agrees and apparently has our win total in the 5 - 5.5 range.

We're just not very good. Serious concerns on the O-line, and our running game should be nonexistent. We couldn't run the ball last year with the best mobile QB in the air raid era. While there is some optimism on defense (optimism is relative--for us, it's fielding a top 75 defense), most Tech fans are not buying in to the hype. We have a former walk-on that no one on scholarship can beat out at one safety spot, a grad transfer from Washington is apparently backing him up, no pass rushers, many juco transfers in the secondary expected to play. You guys will score in bunches.

I saw EWU play in Lubbock in 08. That was a once-in-a-generation Tech team, and you guys gave us fits. I think it was a two possession game in the 4th quarter. Anyways, much respect to your program. I cannot stand Mike Leach, and it was awesome seeing you guys whip him a few years ago.

TxTech,
We have one thing in common... how we feel about Leach, you can have him back!
That was last year that we beat the Cougars. The score was closer than the game. We lost three WR's all of which are still in a pro camp and an outstanding edge rusher who was also drafted. Our strengths are Oline and QB. Defense appears to be much stiffer then year than last. We have several new coaches including HC so it is uncertain what they will do.
What are the RRaiders strengths and weakness'?

TT, nice post. Actually, have spoken with dozens of Tech fans. Your assessment matches what I saw of your Spring game. In spite of TT's shortcomings, this will be a tough out for our team with the new coaching staff on offense. It will be interesting with Coach Reeder as OC since he came from three years at Ok St. Guessing over/under around 90 points for this one. '08 was a good team, lost in the quarters to App St (eventual FCS champs that year), this team has more talent IMO. Depth against a FBS is always an issue. Looking forward to the contest and seeing the campus. Lots of TT fans and alumni around Frisco.

Hate to nit pick but we lost to App state in the quarters in 2007. 2008 was Baldwin's first year as coach and we finished 6-5.

What are the RRaiders strengths and weakness'?

Strengths:
-Receiver. Even though our "best" receiver transferred to LSU, we should still have one of their better groups you will see. Dylan Cantrell/Keke Coutee would probably get reps for just about anyone.

Linebacker- It's strange to type this because of how bad our defense has been. Jordyn Brooks and Dakota Allen were both freshman All-American in their last years at Tech (Dakota had to spend last season at EMCC/Last Chance U). They actually look like P5 linebackers, compared to recent Tech teams.

Weaknesses

O-line. No depth. True freshman starting at one guard spot. Juco guy beat out a 7th year senior at center. Bad pass protection was masked last year by Mahomes' mobility. Couldn't run against anyone last year, even SFA.

QB depth - The pegged backup is finishing a one-year suspension from the University. Can't practice till the semester starts. Has missed all spring, summer, and beginning of fall camp. Would be big if starter got dinged.

Running back - Apparently this 25-year-old Juco transfer who arrived last week has a chance to play a ton. Not a good sign.

In sum, last year we went 5-7 and lost (1) IMO, the best player I've seen put on Tech uniform, (2) our leading receiver, and (3) one of only two defensive players to start every game last year . All three of the guys mentioned above were underclassmen (Mahomes, WR that transferred to LSU, and DT that transferred to LSU), so they are in addition to natural attrition.

Tough for me to think a 5 win team can lose the guys above and be better the next year. That said, I actually think we win 6, maybe 7, because of a more favorable schedule.

Concerning that your OC comes from Okie lite. They have shredded us in years past. I think Tech wins a close one, similar to the shootout we had with Sam Houston two years ago where they had like 800 yards of offense. I bet the line is Tech -7 or so.

No problem. Just keeping it real. Hated losing that game, team fought gamely at elevation in Boone with an early game time too. Was there and App St got more than they expected that day. So, to amend; although a good team in '07, still think today's team has more talent. ;)

Excellent breakdown. You've made up for all the less knowledgeable TT fans with this concise and honest evaluation TxTech; I declare the fan v fan a coin flip.

:ohno: pretty sure "approx" was the precursor the the "3200" number. Based on this new number, what is the formula for the average increase in distance for a punt or makeable fg at 3280?

Huh?

3280 was from the wiki. Perhaps it's wrong. The house I grew up in near Roos was at 2700 feet according to the altimeter in our truck.

"At elevation" might apply for an Eastern team travelling to Bozeman or better yet, Flagstaff, but it doesn't to Boone. :coffee:

No big deal, just busting your chops a little. :kisswink:

Watching Mahomes play for the Chiefs makes me happy he is not still in Lubbock!

We're going to miss him. Of course, there are Tech fans that think we will be better having a QB that "sticks to the offense, takes what the defense gives him, and doesn't put O-line in bad spot by bailing from the pocket early."

Most teams get better when they lose the 11th pick in the draft, right?

You are super humorous with that last bullet..

We are hoping to maintain offensive output as well with an all new Offensive staff and losing 3 receivers all playing on NFL teams right now, one who set the all time record at all levels of college football, Cooper Kupp. We have a lot of talent returning including a Jr led OL, top FCS QB from last season and a deep (by FCS standards) defense and WR corp.

If we had lost GG (QB), would really be questioning what production would be this season. Our expectation is that we may see a bit more balance offensively and the defense will improve off of last years strong 2nd half of the season performance. TT will be a huge test early.
As one of our superfans (Dopa) has stated; we have started fast the last several years, hope to keep up that streak against TT. If this team does, TT will have their hands full.
Unknowns abound.

repost
Don't know the physical health of the players coming back, but if Jordan and Havili are healthy, they will have big disruptive years. Havili's mindset was what kickstarted the season last year and Jordan's quick's inside showed real promise. Given Tiuli (a huge fan) is Tiuli and draws some extra attention, the DL should be a wrecking crew and the depth of good DB's is phenomenal. Led by Fettig and Webster and a coaching staff that has been together for 3 years now on that side of the ball, it is all upside. BigSky look out. Expect a couple Richmond like performances from the D this season even in the face of the brutal early season schedule.
