EWU v No. Iowa Sep 12th -- GAME DAY THREAD & Thoughts

I might as well sound off. I honestly doubt this defense could stop a good High School team. I don't recall a college team that is as poorly coached on the defensive side of the ball. I have a feeling if we had Ohio State's or Alabama's personnel we would still give up the same amount of points and yards. Another issue, we are not physical enough in the front 7 and we are way too small. I have a feeling MSU will score on every possession, I just don't see how this defense could stop any team,

It's evident to me that West is on a short leash with the coaching staff. Unfortunately, today reminded me so much of the NAU game last season. With all do respect to West, I don't think he has the moxy to be the leader of this offense.

I think Hennessey is the guy moving forward, making his injury critical to our future. This was a tough loss.

The D I felt took a step back, once again. I've never seen a team miss so many tackles. It's infuriating to watch.

The sky isn't falling, but next week is now a MUST WIN game.

Injuries are killing us.

we're decimated. 2011 all over again.

Not just in regards to starting off the season with losses and injuries. But we need to get a flipping running game going again! QB's did a decent job passing statistically, but we are too one dimensional. We rushed for 26 yards on 25 carries. That ain't going to get it done.

Although West made some great throws and played solid, Hennessy's mobility would have no doubt helped us move the ball more effectively especially considering our Junior backup OL played so poorly. They couldn't even keep the DL out on Quick pass plays with 2-3 step drops.

Anything that could have gone wrong, did. I was hoping that we'd see some improvement on the defensive side of the ball, but it just seems like same old, same old. MSU probably beats us by 3-4 TD's, especially if we don't get some key personnel back.

I don't think we'll beat MSU, meaning we'll have to win 8 straight conference games to even make the playoffs. once again, a brutal early season schedule bites us in the ass.

You can't put this loss on scheduling. EWU should have won this game by 2 touchdowns.

I saw three things that are really hurting us today. I'll list them in order.

- Our Juniors that filled in due to injuries MUST step up. Our Junior OL in particular was as bad as I've seen and led to Hennessy's injury, as well as several missed passes due to our QB's getting rushed because we couldn't keep the DL out of our QB's face even on quick passes like Slants and Stop routes. It was BAD.

- Injuries - I know I'll miss some, but Kupp, Hill, Raynes, Hennessy, Samson, etc were all out of the game by about halftime (Hennessy soon after). It's tough to have those guys out because they are all amost our best playmakers. Our backups MUST improve.

- Penalties. For two weeks we have been completely homered on penalties and non calls. In particular, the hit on Kupp that injured his hip early in the game was clearly "TARGETING" and was a non call. Then Hoffman trips and barely falls on a player as he is tackled, holding himself up and back to avoid injuring the kid, and we get a call, and UNI does worse 2-3 times and no call. It's tough to watch.

I wont say much more, because I don't want to be overly negative. But we should have won this game by a 21 point margin.

The boys need our support now more than ever. It's like Lombardi used to say: "When the team is winning I tend to be the hardest on them, because everyone else is patting them on the back. Likewise, when we are losing, I tend to pick them up, because everyone else is putting us down. It keeps us balanced."

Couldn't agree more about the penalties. I don't normally complain about officiating having an outcome in a game but today was brutal. Absolutely, brutal.

Either West of Bourne need to study the playbook. Lots of miscommunication between the two.
If the games were Madden Video game, my bet is that Bourne needs more points in his "AWARENESS" rating. It seems like anything that requires an extended play by him in terms of the play always catches him completely unaware of what is going on. It's exactly what makes Kupp so dangerous and Bourne doesn't have it yet.

The halftime stats said it all - we had 8 penalties for over 150 yards, and they had 1 for 8 yards. HOMERED!

I didn't even see what happened to Hennessey. What happened, anyway?

After his throw he was upright but got his ankle rolled from a defensive lineman.

I was surprised to see Baldwin punt on 4th and ~5 on the opponents 45 yard line in the fourth quarter. An unforced error on our punt coverage and they took over around the 35.

I would expect most coaches to punt in that situation, but I was thinking Baldwin would go for it.

#60 Dienes and #73 Boatright had a Double team going on a DT and they were pushed back 5 yards right into Hennessy as he went through his throwing motion. His leg was what was hurt, looked like foot or ankle.

The penalties were weird, but I wouldn't blame this loss on officiating. It was ironic to see the UNI receiver leave the game after attempting what was obviously on illegal chop block in the open field, and not called. I think that guy actually got a stinger on a punt return, and it flared up when he threw his shoulder into a knee attempting an illegal chop block.

That being said I think UNI lost a touchdown reception it looks like was caught, and we got a touchdown that I did not think we had controlled the ball inbounds.

Not good officiating, but some clear need for improvement for the Eags.

The pick 6 was painful. The receiver turned late and the ball was a little high. If it was one of the regular receivers I think it would have been caught. That's a dangerous call when you aren't working with guys with a lot of reps working together.

How could the defense be so blind sided by the screen pass at the end? That was the obvious low risk pass play to run in that situation.

Similar to NAU last season, there were a lot of opportunities to win this one. We just didn't find the way.

Lots of room to get better.

I was thinking the same thing during the game.
