ewu vs. georgetown...in portland

this is too good to be true. You couldn't have handpicked a better team to upset. And we play in Portland. This is ridiculous. Can't believe it!

From the Rafters....
go eags!

This is about as favorable a matchup as we could have asked for. I don't know a lot about Georgetown other than it does seem like they have made a habit of making an early exit from the tournament. Think I'll be making the drive down to PDX. I really hope Eagle nation will show up.

Happy to have avoided Gonzaga. The NCAA didn't really do Georgetown any favors due to the travel and if we come out hot we can beat this team.

I don't know a lot about them either, but you can be sure that as a Big East team they'll have some bigs that are going to give us problems.

The watch party at Reese Court was a blast! What a good time visiting the team and watching the selection show on the big screen. Loved the shout out to Tyler Harvey and the matchup that we got. Looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it down in Portland this Thursday!

I just watched the ESPN bit on our match-up. To paraphrase, the commenters said "Can EWU beat Georgetown? Yes. Will they beat them? No." I hope we prove them wrong!

I was thinking that as well. We really struggled when we played anyone with a solid man in the middle this year. Just look at the three times we played Montana...or the Washington game.

We can play with a lot of perimeter-based teams (see Indiana), but anyone with a solid front court is going to be problematic. We just don't seem to have anyone that can guard those type of players.

I guess I'll just be happy we got in for now. What's the highest seed a Big Sky team has received? I'm sure Weber has gotten some decent pairings in the past.

What was the team's reaction to the draw? I had a feeling we'd get the Seattle game and was pleasantly surprised.

I was hoping we would get the 13 seed in Portland because that gives us our best chance to make the sweet sixteen.

My prediction is we beat Georgetown 81-76 and Utah 88-85.

I know quite a bit about this team. D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera is a pretty tough guard that is an NBA type, but he's only 6'3" and our guards will match up well with him. My biggest concern is Josh Smith. He is a load. He started his career at UCLA and will present big matchup problems for us. But this team is ripe for the upset. I just think we will outscore them plain and simple.

Joshua Smith from Kent Wa, Senior 6'10" at 350 lbs. I remember him at UCLA. Very inconsistent but had really good hands and a soft touch. Maybe he has changed but he was in horrible shape and simply could not move up and down the floor. So, Jois only gives up a couple inches and should be able to take him on the dribble. If we are hitting 3's and spreading the ball around with good passing I think we have a great chance to win this game.

Anyone from the Spokane area driving down that wouldn't mind making a stop in the Tri-Cities? I have Wed and Thu off, would love to road trip it down there. I can split gas costs. Send me a PM, let me know. GO EAGS!

We need to exploit Smith at 6'10" 250lbs. If he tries to match up with a Venky on the perimeter , Venky should blow by him. When Venky is out of the game, OG and Blizzard should be able to rain threes at will. If he steps out on them we should have lanes to the hoop all day with our bigs driving to the hoop. We need to let the ball fly. If this turns into a slow Princeton style game like Georgetown wants it to, the eags could be in trouble. We need to keep the game in the 70s or 80s.

Rafter, he is 350 pounds. I really want to see some video of him.
