EWU vs. UD

Wow! How refreshing is it to have a fan of the opposing team actually be a great addition to the board?! Especially after having to put up with those yolk sacks from NDSU (not all of them, but most that chose to participate on this site).

Thanks, Old Hen!

Finally got a chance to look at the EWU/Nova game, and at least some of the EWU/NDSU game. I'll let them settle and go back to them in a few days and post any further thoughts I have.... but what I saw thus far makes me think a few things...

I too like to game film the opponent and will bring my thoughts to here if someone has access to footage other than the ESPN3 coverage on the last game against GA Southern. OldHen, any chance you have access to any UD footage? Feel free to PM me with any "info" I might need.

THANKS!

Brandon

I only have a couple of games in the DVR, and have never figured out a way to (successfully) get them out and onto some other format... that I could mail or email. I'm not set up to burn DVD's or make tapes from my DVR. Maybe someday.

Tell you what, though... there are probably several fans over at gohens.net that could point you in the right direction. You might also noodle around the NCAA FCS Brackets site to see if any of their streaming coverage was archived anywhere. I plan to do that, but haven't taken the time.

They are a prototypical CAA champion... they may not knock anyone's socks off but they are incredibly difficult to beat.
This may be the most concise description of the CAA that I've ever seen, and it is no exaggeration to say that seven other CAA teams could have made deep post-season runs.

The EWU is faster than UD meme is a familiar one to Blue Hens fans, and that assertion was made by several other teams until they actually faced off against us. The Hens do not have the No. 1 scoring defense in FCS because teams were faster than them.

-EWU's D likes to keep everything in front of them. Devlin's short passing game will oblige them. He'll take those 5-7 yards on quick-hitters all day and night, and EWU is going to have to adjust to try to take that away. I've said all along, I think the trick for EWU is going to be getting UD off the field on third down. Playing soft in the secondary against a 70% passer favoring quick-developing, short routes won't git 'er done, and I'm going to be interested in seeing how EWU adjusts because I think they're going to have to.

Great thread.

In my mind, from EWU's perspective Oldhen nailed it with the observation above.

Given 3 weeks to prepare, it will be interesting to see what Graham comes up with.

Oldhen, if you're going by the NDSU and Nova games, you pretty much know what we're bringing. The only exceptions would be I think we dropped a lot more passes in those games than we have all season, and I think our kick coverage in those games was sub par. Other than that, that is pretty much who we are.

Do we get Gant back for this game?

Checked practice out today, beautiful day in Cheney. #2 looked good to me at practice as did everyone else. I think our staff will do well with three weeks to prepare. Look for an announcement about a gathering during game week at a bar in downtown Spokane, hopefully O'Doherty's. We love getting together at Northern Quest on Monday's, please come January 3 for the Coaches Show. It is difficult for some people to get out to the Casino so it would be good to do something downtown on January 4. That way we can take your 2011 EAA donations and make some hay while the sun is shining. If you haven't joined the EAA for 2010 it isn't too late, just go to http://www.goeags.com and have your credit card handy. Winning cost money, donate today. Our student athletes have earned your support.

Me thinks if we don't turn the ballover your defense is in trouble. You've made a living on short fields with big strikes. We don't put the ball on the carpet much, grass in Frisco, nor do we give up the home run on defense. If these two variables are different, we could be in trouble.

Our defense is much better suited to stop the run which is why I think Villanova was a much better match up for EWU than Delaware is going to be. We saw that a good QB can carve us up with Southern Utah so hopefully some adjustments will be made going into this one. Our secondary needs to show up, but I do think our defense live will get some pressure on Devlin.

I don't have access to game film or even ESPN3 (thanks to my ISP provider) so I can't look to validate my observation at the game but it certainly looked to me like Nova was employing a wedge on their kickoff returns. I know it's not a legal play anymore but 3 players lined up side by side going up the field sure caught my attention so I'm not entirely sure that the kick coverage was sub par so much as not prepared for that tactic. I thought they did a good job of adjusting to it as the game went on when it became apparent it was part of Nova's package.

Just my two cents from watching the play live. Thanks for the great imput in this thread.

Probably so, let's see how he responds to it. If he does well, he will have validated all the folks that believe he is a 3rd/4th/5th round pick. If not, it will cost him millions

We've contrasted the teams on the field so I thought it was interesting to look at the money behind the teams ... based on the latest year's data (Jul 09-Jun 10) the total expenses for the respective teams were:

UD $ 5,745,000
EWU $ 2,426,000

The cumulative recruiting budget for all the men's teams at each school were:

UD $ 380,000
EWU $ 74,000

If you look at every other category, the disparity is about the same (except in coaches salaries where it's worse). I'd say we're getting a hell of a return on our buck - but it does burn me a bit when I see that UD is chartering a plane to bring their 150 person band and major boosters. In contrast, we're probably not going to be able to bring ours and we're also two years removed from almost losing the band due to funding.

All the more reason to GO EAGS!

HannahO - Good information. Makes me real proud to be an Eagle supporter - that they can compete nationally on a shoestring budget is very impressive. As for the band, from what I understand they are going - chartering a plane and going down and coming back in the same day. Not sure about cheerleaders although I would imagine they'll be there. BTW, whoever is leading that band deserves some kudos (I think his name is Patrick Winters, not sure, my apologies if that is incorrect)....after what they pulled together at the Nova game with volunteers and now making it to the NC game. Awesome.

WOW. What a difference a few years makes. Over and back in the same day? Yikes! Yes, Patrick Winters is the band director out at EWU. As a former snare drummer with the Eagle band, I'm proud to be able to be able to brag about their performance against Villanova. What a cool deal.

In all facets, GO EAGS!!
