I can hear the Buzzzzzzzzzzz. Less than a week away. I'm sure the repairs were made to the practice field. It's time for some football. Anyone have information on Nick Anderson QB from El Dorado? What is his story?

BTW, yes I am getting very excited the fall camp is about to open...the same goes for our volleyball team as well...though it will definitely be weird not seeing Debby on the bench after 32 years.

Welcome to the board Herky! Bad news though, Jason Smith is going to start the year at #2 on the depth chart @ QB. I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the field a little bit at WR though.
MBT is going to be the man and Jason will have to help out as needed and be ready to jump in if needed, IMO...

Thanks for the welcome.
I think that MBT's lack of mobility along with O-line issues will mean that Jason is the starter by the end of camp because we will need someone who can avoid sacks.
I enjoy the updates on this board and hope it becomes more active as the season approaches.

I'd disagree with MBT not being mobile. In that final drive against BYU (in which UCLA should have won the game), he avoided two sacks and scrambled out and made passes down the field. Besides, he's a little bit taller than Smith is and I agree with Kadeezy that MBT is going to start...though Smith will keep him in check all year and probably play a little slot as well.

I agree with MBT's lack of mobility..I watched the spring game and he got sacked way too many times. What will he do against a defense he isn't used to? I think Jason is the starter.

Kadeezy, you are right in you impression. The #1 QB this year will not come down to who is a better scrambler. The decision will be made on who makes the most plays and proves to be a leader. Spring ball is to let many players get reps so the team can be evaluated as a whole. Of course the "D" line was better in spring, they are always ahead. Once the number one "O" line is established in camp, you'll see the offense gel. Also, remember our Defense pretty "F"ing good. That will help our "O" get better as well. I love to see the chatter. Keep it coming.

If there are issues, I would say it is with Smith's health. He sat out spring ball.
If his back isn't 110% better, he won't be doing much scrambling.

Sperbeck's offense is somewhat similar to the Colts offense. It's ALLLL about making reads. The most intelligent quarterback will be the starter and I'm told that Smith has already proven to be efficient regarding the playbook. From what my sources are telling me that is a great chance that Smith may be the starter by camp's end.

Well, today was the last day before full pads and contact begins tomorrow. Any report on how it went today? What are initial impressions so far? I will try to get out sometime this weekend.

If Smith missed spring ball and is still nursing an injury, how can he be the front runner over a guy who had Pac-10/Bowl credentials? MBT has got to be the man in my eyes. I know Smith was just a Frosh last year (and he did a commendable job), but he made WAY too many BAD reads that cost us games. He didn't do a good enough job of managing the offense.

I tried to post these thoughts earlier, but it did not show up, for some reason. Probably ended up in the basketball section or something.
I don't understand this "Pac-10 credentials" line of thinking. MBT had a 42% completion rate in two losing games for UCLA, 1 TD, 5 interceptions, and 7 sacks. How does that translate to instant starter for the Hornets? Smith had a 53% completion rate and actually won a few games. MBT might turn out to be a good player, but being the last QB standing at UCLA is not evidence of that.
I'm hoping that someone will go out to the practices this weekend and provide us a report. I must have missed the daily update in the Bee. :roll:
