Great Story by the Standard Staff about our WR corp: http://www.standard.net/Sports/2015/08/19/Know-the-Cats-Weber-State-s-young-receivers.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Love this series by Garside!! #KnowtheCats

NOgden you're a bigger fan of Garside's reporting than I am. This a nice little article but like all his stories, it lacks depth. It really tells us very little about anything. What happened to Kaimikana and Cole Payne? What's the depth chart looking like? Who's dealing with injuries? We also have one of the most exciting WR recruiting classes is some time and nothing is said about the freshman. Which freshman, if any, can we expect to contribute? Hambric, Holmes, Prince, and Sherlin look to be studs. Hambric is 6'4" with great speed. Sherlin was still getting serious FBS interest after he committed to Weber. But instead all we get is lots of quotes and more coach speak.

Maybe I'm just happy someone is writing something about Weber State Sports. We all know that Garside isn't the greatest of journalist, but at least he is writing something. You are definitely right though lots of questions remain unanswered.

Without knowing what to expect from the freshman, here's my best shot at a WR depth chart based on last season:

1 Livingston, Jr (12 Games/10 Starts, 57 Receptions)
2 Batchelor, So (11/10, 22)
3 Denby, So (5/2, 9)
4 Corpus, Jr (12/1, 5)
5 Fields, So (10/0, 0)
6 Stribling, Jr (Redshirt)
7 McMahan, RFr (Redshirt)
8 Tunney, Jr (JC)

Freshman:
Hambric
Holmes
Mayela
Prince
Sherlin

As fans, we all want to know those sorts of things. However, a coach can't give an answer to something they don't know, and a reporter does not want to report on an 'I don't know' answer. There won't be answers to some of those questions until fall camp is over. It's still a fluid, competitive situation. If a coach were to speculate about a young player's contribution, and then that player is red shirted, it would look like the coach is clueless. We might be asking for things we just can't get. :twocents:

agree on this. hill seems to be using camps to eval competition level on defense and have to admit I like what we see. never know what to expect from the QB's until whistle blows and OL injuries may dictate what attack plan OC will use early. I think that's why we haven't seen much from the passing game in regards to stretching the field. Receivers have had a tough time making the routine catches. hill wont keep a qb that turns it over and he has plenty to pick from now

QB is key. Again.
:+1:
Your right it is all about the qb at weber as to if they will have have success this season. I have watched many of the practices and scrimmages and games and have seen nothing that would indicate we have some one that can lead the team Tia winning season. Hopefully someone steps up in fall camp soon and ca show the ability throw the long ball

My money is on Jadrian if he can stay healthy. He moved the ball well last year. Receivers need to Man Up. No dropped balls.

I really appreciate the openness of Livingston but I think it reveals a little bit of a problem with the mental approach that could exist in our receiving corps. EVERY RECEIVER MUST BELIEVE HE IS THE BEST RECEIVER ON THE FIELD AND WANT AND EXPECT THE BALL ON EVERY PASS PLAY. You cannot rely on one receiver. That is not how successful receiving corps operate. It's a team of receivers. If you are left one on one you have to beat that defender and the QB needs to see it and get the ball to you. Adjustments. That's when it starts to work. Larry Fitzgerald is one of the best receivers in the NFL and he almost never got thrown to last year. Why? Because they needed to double cover him which left other receivers open. It's time to rock and the receiving corps is a big part of making it happen. Go Cats!

agree mac he'll be most consistent. billy was turnover prone and rest not standing out... our rec will step up I think and our running game could be better than we think if OL holds tight. so excited for season and still optimistic haha for a great run. go cats

Key to this season, keeping the offensive line healthy. That, to me, is the most crucial area that hinges on the teams ability to be successful. The defensive unit is going to be nasty. Our LB's could be the best in the conference, maybe among the best in FCS. The secondary is damn good too. That only makes our WR's and offense better. Having to go against a solid defense makes the offense better. Still feel our QB play if iffy, but I like Jadrian's ability to lead and run with the ball. Leckington and Green are both competent backups who can make things happen if they get into a game. Shaw, the fresh from Fremont, might be the best passer, but isn't ready to play yet. He is going to be damn good.

Big Joe should be back and ready to go by the Oregon State game. They aren't going to play him much till next week. Cameron Young, AJ Wilcox, Shane Oliverson, and Conner Shannon are all ready to go. To me that is a pretty stout starting 5. Unlike last season, this season there is far more depth. Our backups on the OL need some more fine tuning, but I feel they are coming along much better than last season.

Freshman WR group major bust this year all except one who has a major gear that no one else on the team has the same type of gear. Good deep threat However he has no route running ability, and no hands. The rest of tthe WR freshman classs will see no playing time this season and will be red shirted. To weak, to skinny, no experience of dealing with physical db's at the college level. Not to mention they are still trying to figure out the play book and offense install. The only freshman WR receivers that usually play their freshman year are either 3 star recruits or higher or are joining a team with no depth on the team at the WR position. None of the freshman WR are 3 star or above and their is too much experience and transfers coming in that can jump right in. All of that is for naught unless the qb play improves big time and quickly.

Linebackers. Good update. I really like the depth we have at this position.

Sounding like Clark will be the starter, with Leckington #2, and Green #3.
Yeah I think that is sorta obvious after watching the 2 scrimmages. Wish they would actually release the 2 deep before the season starts.

Clark is the most confident one out of the bunch it seems. Leadership skills are on point. As long as the line holds up he should have a good season I'm hoping. Are linebackers look great too very physical !!

Gotta love Randy Hollis. He sure does represent Weber County well.

Yes, good ol' Roy Boy.

"There's a few areas where depth worries me a little bit," Hill said. "If you take the wrong injuries at the wrong spot, then that would concern me. ..."

Where's he pointing? Where are the worst areas for injury this year?
