Thanks for the report. I'm getting more excited by the day, this should be an interesting season for the bears.

Was a nice report but linking Downing to Wooden in any way is a bit much IMHO. I get his point that it takes time to recruit and build a team but Wooden may be the best coach this nation has ever seen in any sport.

In no way am I comparing Downing to Wooden. I am just saying that it takes time to win championships and what our Bears FB team needs from our fans besides butts in the seats is patience. Granted, we shouldn't give 16 seasons. But to give up hope on our coach (which I have seen many times on this blog from the past 4 years) when making the transition from D II to FCS is just wrong. Downing will never be a John Wooden, Bear Bryant, Pete Carrol or a Nick Saban. But he can definitely be a Bobby Hauck.

I'm not ready to anoint them a play off team yet, too many ??? on offense. In order to be in the play offs we would have to be in the top 2 in the conference, maybe 3. I think we're a middle of the pack team right now. Maybe another year, but who knows?

I would be thrilled with a middle of the pack .500 team. Tells you how far we have sunk but also how well Downing has done with recruiting considering he has no wins to recruit off of.

I agree, I think they're a middle of the pack team right now. I just don't see a 1 win season this year, there's too much talent, and with the coaching changes. With these coaches I think they have people that actually know what they're doing. The biggest question is still at QB, but I think with whoever they put there, they should be good.

I think it speaks volumes about his recruiting right now. The cupboard was really bare when Dalton left. Kay thought he could coach up any player regardless of talent level. Downing has brought in some nice players, our assistants just haven't coached them up (with the exception of the assistant coaches, I think they're great).
