HERO Sports is doing a capsule of every FCS football team for 2018.

They are a fairly new online site dedicated to following the FCS so I don't know how reliable they are, but at the same time, the coverage of FCS football could certainly use another outlet. They are breaking down teams in groups of two starting alphabetically. Just FYI, their preview of Portland State isn't until July 29.

From HERO Sports regarding Montana State: "Easily the most intriguing team on this list [FCS Football: 10 Teams that had Losing Records that Won't in 2018, Including Villanova and Montana State], the Bobcats are a talented team with fringe playoff hype, even though they're outside the top 25 in pretty much all of the major preseason polls. The problem with hyping State is that the schedule is brutally tough. After a couple of sleepy games with Wagner and Portland State in mid-September, the Bobcats host Eastern Washington, and the schedule never really lightens up."

What I find interesting this year about the Bobcats is that Murray is still supposed to be the heir apparent QB, yet they felt the need to bring in former Duck QB Jonson. Also, conference road games are always tough, regardless of the opponent. If the Cats feel the need to "sleep"walk through the game here, I must say I am fine with that.

Football Gameplan's Big Sky Conference 2018 preview. Two good reviews of the Viks season, including a "top storyline" for the conference this season.

Thank you for referencing our 2018 "Two A Days" FCS preview, which will wrap with conference by conference previews the week before kickoff. We'll be running them June 18 to Aug 18.

To the question above: We're constantly talking to the players and coaches in the FCS. Coach Barnum is one of the guys I interviewed first when we kicked this off in 2015, after the Wazzu win.

Keep in touch and thanks for the mention!

No problem. Nice little group of Vik fans here, but we get some really good discussion going. Come on back when you can! :thumb:

I can't say as I would disagree with us being at the bottom. Pretty dismal year last year, with few if any highlights. If we had some young players that looked good, but a year or so away last year, you might make a case for ranking a little higher. Barnum's aw shucks personality is great for interviews, but it's on the field that matters to people rooting during games.

I can't either although I do think we are capable of surprising some people. Coming off an 0-fer season and still unsettled at the quarterback position which is the most important position in this offensive driven conference. Also starting the conference slate with games at both the Kibbie Dome and Wash-Griz, two places that thrive on getting under the opposing team's skin. We have to make sure we keep our poise at those places. Our game with Idaho is going to be their Big Sky home opener and they will want to show they are so much better than the rest of the conference. Montana is just Montana. The visitor is not going to get any calls at either place, so the coaches and players need to not bellyache about the calls and just play football. If you're going to bellyache, sit up in the stands with the fans.

Looks like nowhere to go but up. :thumb:

It does depend on the QB. Who ever it is need to be a treat with his feet. Last year I thought Eason could have taken off a bunch but didn't. A treat to run QB is aways a problem.

I think they can do better than 13, How much I don't know but at least three spots.

By the end of the season, I highly doubt we will be in the cellar. But for now, coming off an 0-fer season, unsettled at quarterback (among other positions), new DC coming in, and the overall strength of the conference being "up" from last year, I can see where an unbiased opinion would have us last in preseason. We really haven't shown anything to convince the media or coaches otherwise. But it seems in recent years, there have been teams that have come out of nowhere that the "experts" didn't think they would be good, that have surprised, including us back in 2015. Us, Northern Colorado, Idaho State and Cal Poly all will most likely be at or near the bottom in all preseason rankings, but I think all four are capable of surprising this year.

We should have won 4 more close games in 2014. I was not surprised by 2015 with the talent we had. In 2016 I was surprised we could fall so fast and in 2017 I felt it would get worse and it did. Leadership is the same so 2018 will still see us as #12 or #13. Media and coaches see what we still struggle to recognize...

Sadly, I believe you are right on target.

I do like to keep things positive, but I know for sure we did not go 6-5 last year.
