hey ive been a hornet fan for awhile now but havent came to the board before now. but the real reason i am posting now is because of the recent moves made to fire Osterhout, Biaz, and Case. I am really confused as to how you fire O in specific bc of what he has brought to this program and what he has helped produce when it comes to top players.
 
WHAT??!!!! I wouldn't believe your post until I went to hornetsports and noticed O and others are not listed as coaches. I am dazed and confused. And, sick to my stomach.
 
Holy….I, don’t know what to say. No room for Alumni on the staff. :?: I guess this answers any question about Sperbeck’s job security. Everybody remember, It's a business.
 
I cant believe it either.... the reason cited was moving in a different direction but when is it okay to fire a coach like coach o who has produced some top notch defensive lineman and brings so many intangibles to the program not to mention he is on the hall of fame. coach baiz has been a hornet for life bleeds green and gold and again has many intangibles on and off the field. its a sad day in hornet land! Sperbeck what are you thinking?
 
Wow. Pretty big moves especially coming off of a successful season that saw much improvement over the previous season. I have no inside information but maybe the Biaz move had more to do with the 2009 season than anything else. I imagine it could be hard to get demoted from DC to LB coach and not second guess what your replacement has been doing. With that possibly going on, that may have caused a rift in the coaching ranks and the others sided with Biaz so they were also sh!t canned with him. Again just my speculation as I have no idea what could be the reasoning behind these moves. Who knows, maybe those coaches were set to get raises and the program couldn’t afford it.

"different direction" ?????? You have, arguably, one of your best seasons in 1AA and you want to move in a new direction by firing lifetime Hornets Johnny O and Biaz? Sorry, Case. Don't know anything about you. To quote Shakespeare's Hamlet, "Something is rotten in the fieldhouse at J Street." Yes, he did say that. I was a Pre-English major.
 
While I do not understand this move and do not like to lose longtime loyal faces to the program, I can only assume there is an underlying reason for this. However, Sperbeck is going to be questioned for this for years to come by long-time Hornet faithful.

Man, there's gotta bw something going on within the program and it can't be good... Of course it has to happen going into our most important offseason EVER...
 
WTF?!? Getting rid of two of the best, most loyal Hornets in history, one of whom is HC-ready?!?

This will be my last and final post on Sac Buzz. First let me say, that neither Jon or Lou were fired because of recruiting violations, cheating, crimes, or violating any University policy or regulation. They were let go because Coach Sperbeck made the decision to go in another direction. I can't say why he made that decision, but as Head Coach its his prerogative. I'm sure many will want to know why and question this move. If you find out, let me know. Our family has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Hornet family for the past 15 years and we wish all the Hornets the best. I resigned from the Stinger board tonight because under the circumstances I simply can't support the program based on the decision that's been made. I hope that someday I can be involved again but right now this is too painful to ignore.

I also want people to understand the sacrifice Jon and Ali made to come back to Sac State in 2008. Jon gave up an opportunity to coach for a year at Nebraska under Bo Pelini (he was the only defensive staff member invited to stay after Callahan was fired and it was because Ndamakong Suh told Pelini Jon was the best DL coach there and he should keep him) and he gave up finishing his Master's degree there by coming back to Sac State early. He was asked by Marshall Sperbeck if he'd make a long term commitment if he was hired back and not leave in two or three years for greener pastures. Jon agreed to that and bought a house in March and is expecting another child in February. I guess the commitment didn't run both ways. Sure, I'm biased, but if there's a better coach and especially a better recruiter on that staff, I'd sure like to know who it is.

Sad day to be a Hornet indeed. HHD tell John he and the family are in our thoughts and we know he will move on to those greener pastures that I'm sure await him.
 
HHD sorry to hear all this, sounds terrible that this decision is made if it’s just because Sperbeck wanted to “go in another direction.” If in fact you do step away from this board, you will be missed. Best of luck to you and your son. I hope everything works out. :(

I am sorry to hear about your son and his family. Your family is a class act, and I am very sad to see this happen. JO, we all KNOW what you did for this program. You keep your head high, you will land, on both feet because the cream ALWAYS rises to the top. Be Well!!

I am sick to my stomach what this University has just done to those who are the most ardent supporters.
 
As a former player and Football Alumni Board member, the firing of Coach Biaz and Coach O comes down to simple and unfortunate situation, politics. Read the bio for Anthony Parker ( i dont call him coach because coaches hold high levels of integrity) and you will see hie spent time at Boise State, mostly carrying water, wiping the sweat off Chris Petersons brow, etc. This is what Marshall fell in love with...to have someone, anyone, that could even bring a piece of that Boise magic to Sac State, Marshall would sacrifice anything..and he did, 2 coaches that dedicated their lives and time away from family so that Marshall could get the opportunity to be where he is at today.

While Coach O was at Nebraska coaching future top 10 draft picks (Karriker and Suh), Anthony was chasing high schoolers at Del Oro and coaching nickelbacks at Boise (wtf?)....nice credentials.

Here is what happened...Anthony feared his job would be in jeopardy because of Coach O's natural coaching ability, stature and legacy at Sac State. He more than likely made an ultimatum to Sperbeck - "I can bring some of that Boise magic that I learned while chopping tape in the back room, but you have to let me get rid of Biaz and Osterhout." Sperbeck ate the apple...

The players, the fans and the alumni are in shock by what has happened. Sperbeck- You have displaced a family, broke a commitment you made to Jon after he did nothing but give you every minute he had to help the team he loves get better.

My financial support, support for the coaches and football program walked out the door when decided that being loyal was less important than empty promises from Anthony. I will work as hard as I can to ensure that as many Sac State supporters, alumni and the businesses that help understand what really happened here.

Anthony and Sperbeck - you are spineless and gutless. As much as I want to see Sac State succeed, I hope that the program fails miserably in the coming years and costs you your jobs. I know the second you are gone, the first call made by the Sac State Football Alumni board will be to the coaches that sacrificed everything for the betterment of the program - the same coaches you ultimately screwed.
 
Welcome to the board six_3, I’m going to play devil’s advocate here and point out a few things that I see from your first post here on Sac Buzz. You are quick to bash Parker and if that’s what you want to do then fine, I understand emotions are hot right now as two highly respected and committed Hornet alums/coaches were shown the door for what appears right now as no reason other than wanting “to go in another direction.”

Yes, let’s read the ENTIRE bio and not just one sentence to support your quip:
“Parker came to the Hornets from Boise State where he assisted the program for four seasons. He began his tenure with the Broncos as a student manager during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Parker was then named a graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008 where he worked with the defensive line and also nickel backs. During his time at BSU, the team posted a 44-8 overall record and advanced to a bowl game each season. The highlight came in 2006 when Boise State finished the year 13-0, including an overtime victory over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Ironically, the Broncos began that year with a victory over Sacramento State.

Prior to joining the Boise State program, Parker was high school coach in the Sacramento area. He was the defensive backs coach and pass-defense coordinator at Del Oro High School in Loomis, Calif., from 2002-04. While at Del Oro, he helped coach the Golden Eagles to a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II championship game in 2004. During that season, Del Oro led the Sierra Foothill League in interceptions and also allowed the fewest points. So you bash Parker for putting in his dues at Boise and everywhere else along the way. What did you expect him to do? Show up a Boise and demand to be a coach at a successfully program right from the get go? We all know that wouldn’t happen. It reads as if he worked his way up the ladder. He started coaching in JC, then a Sacramento area high school, then broke into the D-1 ranks after earning his BS from Boise after putting in his dues there as a student assistant all of which followed honorable service in the Marines. It sounds like this isn’t his first time around the block.

Do you know this as fact? I have no doubt that Coach O (with all due respect) was doing a fantastic job. A Hornet has led the BSC the last two years in sacks and the recent recruiting classes have been solid and Coach O deserves a lot of credit for being a part of this. Coach O very well could have been on his way to being the DC which I am sure he aspired to be as it is a significant position to hold, but let’s not overlook the success of this past season on the defensive side of the ball. Parker installed his system and the defense saw a dramatic increase in performance. Maybe this was a reason Sperbeck decided to go with the “Boise magic.” Don’t get me wrong, every single coach on the defensive side of the ball played a part in this success but to see the night and day difference from a Biaz system in 2009 compared to a Parker system in 2010 should not be quickly overlooked. Unfortunately this success resulted in this program losing two great contributors to this Hornet program we all love.

I agree. Terrible move to go back on his word. This gives Sperbeck a black eye and it sucks, but ultimately Sperbeck is held accountable for making this program as successful as he can. If he felt doing what he did will do that, then that is his decision to make and we all have to live with it. The move makes absolutely no sense if Coach O and Coach Biaz were fully committed to Parkers way of running things. If they were undermining Parker in any way, then Sperbeck made the right move as infighting among the coaches in no way to be successful. (I don’t know if they had any intentions to undermine Parker and I am in no way indicating that there is evidence of this.)

What promises from Parker? Yes misery loves company. Let’s hope failure onto this program. Why don’t you just call Moosh up and have him apply for a coaching job while you are at it. I understand that you probably have a personal connection to one or both of these two fine Hornets that are no longer with the program and by all means feel free to leave with them, but to take on a campaign to bash the program is ridiculous. I understand you are upset, and it is a very emotional event that just occurred, but to hope for failure on a program that has seen its fair share of struggles is pretty absurd. I have no ties to the football program other than being an alum, a donor (albeit as small as it is), and a critic, but I will always be a supporter and hope for success through thick and thin. If we were able to get through the Moosh era, there is no reason why we can’t get through this.
