Firing Coaches

Let me first say that it's always a difficult situation when people lose their jobs, since families are involved it's painful. For that I wish all the coaches the best of luck. I want to also wich Coach O the best of luck, he was a great player and a respected member of the staff and the alumni. Best wishes to coach Biaz as well.

But I'm also a little puzzled by some of the people posting today. Many of the same people were posting on the topic of "The Future of Sperbeck and Staff", some even wondering if he deserves an extension or even to keep his job. Now people are saying that making a few decisions regarding the coaching staff is horrible because this was the greatest season in FCS. I completely agree that Sperbeck is responsible for the program and will ultimately has to be given the rope to either succeed or hang himself.

I think everyone is being a little over dramatic to be shocked about Biaz being let go. He didn't succeed as the DC, and in reality demotions rarely succeed - regardless of the quality of charater of those involved. There are going to be hurt feelings that linger and that usually results in a speration.

I can't comment on Coach O because I don't have any details. From everything I've heard he's an outstanding person so I'm confident that his character and abilities will help him land on his feet. HHD, I know as a father this must be difficult on you as well, seeing your children in pain is a very challenging thing to handle. I'm sure he's glad to have you in his corner!

But when you get past the emotion, the HC has to make decisions that he feels will help elevate the program. Thus far his team has made progress both on the field and in the classroom. Time will be the judge as to whether he's successful or not.

For those of you that are rooting against the program (except HHD - family trumps all), you should take some time before you make those comments. Sperbeck has performed well thus far, but like most successful coaches there will ALWAYS be bumps along the way. No situation, coach, or person is perfect in their pursuit of a goal. Most people on this board have stated he's grown the program with class. Although I'm disappointed about Coach O - I'm not going to turn my back on the coach or the program!!

SDHornet - good points, but that doesn't make you any less of an idiot for believing that there is a silver lining. When I read Anthony's bio, it reminds me of a someone that has not really done anything yet. I know people at Boise that know Anthony...his job, exactly, was to make sure the bags were at the right drills and then cut film for everyone else. It was not until his the end of his last year there that he was even allowed into coaches meetings. When he was "coaching", he was in charge of the "nickelbacks" - which isn't even a position, its a defensive call. Really his job was to make sure that the right guys where in the game when someone called the nickel package - oh, and to carry Chris Petersens jock. He has not earned this dues.

The defense was better this year - no doubt. But you and everyone else knows that things like that do not happen overnight. so there is limited, if any credit that should be given to Mr. Parker. It takes recruiting the right talent, building character and motivating players.

By contrast, Coach O has been the recruiting coordinator for the past few years. The past 2 years specifically has seen the best recruiting classes Sac State has ever seen. Read Coach O's bio and you see a resume of a man that not only changed lives and built football players, but someone that is the most respected Hornet of all time. Oh yeah, he was also responsible for recruiting Nadomakong Suh (yeah, that guy) at Nebraska along with coaching former top 10 pick Adam Karriker.

His defensive line this year was the most prolific in school history. They led the Big Sky in sacks, fumbles caused and fumbles recovered. Ranked 2nd in the Big Sky against the rush and ranked 4th in the country against the rush. Back to back seasons with pre-season all americans, back to back seasons with 1st team unanimous 1st all Big Sky (as underclassman) and the only group to have 3 players on the All Big Sky team.

DELETED. KNOCK OFF THE PERSONAL ATTACKS

Oh yeah, one more thing, there is a party this weekend at Sac State to paint the field "boise" blue - you should come up to help out!

OldHornet - you should show up this weekend at the paint the field blue party as well..

It might be a simple issue of clashing personalities. Some personalities are naturally attracted to each other and others cause tension. I believe Parker is a good coach who brings plenty of emotion to the table and demands a lot out of his players. But of course the same can be said about coach O on an even larger scale. I still don't think it was right to get rid of coach O as I feel he was one of the better coaches on the staff but I also don't feel that its right to throw Parker under the bus either.

Another question to bring up is: Was anyone else involved in this decision, such as the AD? I am not making any accusations as I have had nothing but good relations with Dr. Wanless but just wondering what you guys think.

Hammerhead,
I want to say your son is a quality person and coach! Our players have benefited by his knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm. He has made a mark on all of their lives and will always be admired and respected. Each guy will sincerely miss his presense on and off the field. He is leaving a group of guys that deserve to succeed BECAUSE of his teaching. For them to fail would not represent Coach O's legacy fairly.

Coach O will not only survive this, he will benefit from the experience. He will take the lessons learned and move onto bigger things. He has had success here and will achieve even more! Greatness can not be denied.

We will follow his success and cheer him on all the way! He will always be one of us, a Hornet!

I get a different impression when I read his bio and that’s all I’m pointing out. You can play the “I know people who know him” card all you want, but that doesn’t mean I am going to take your word for it. Sorry if that offends you.
The defense was better this year - no doubt. But you and everyone else knows that things like that do not happen overnight. so there is limited, if any credit that should be given to Ms. Parker. It takes recruiting the right talent, building character and motivating players.
I agree it doesn’t happen night, in our case it happened over one offseason and as I stated ALL of the coaches contributed to this success. Coach Biaz failed as a DC, the numbers and performance on the field point to this. Since you are bashing Parker, just note that the Hornet pass defence went from ranked 9th in the BSC in 2009 to ranked 3rd in the BSC in 2010. The facts point to Parker being capable at something, for the sake of this program I hope he can build on this success.
By contrast, Coach O has been the recruiting coordinator for the past few years. The past 2 years specifically has seen the best recruiting classes Sac State has ever seen. I completely agree. Recruiting has been stellar the past few seasons and the coaches deserve the credit, especially Coach O as he was the recruiting coordinator. This will be a huge void to fill and I hope Sperbeck’s plan works, we will find out in due time. Unfortunately these recent moves will no doubt impact the incoming class. Fortunately the Hornet roster is stacked with underclassmen and very well could have played into the timing of these moves.

Wasn't because of a the new midget Ms. Parker.
I agree. Whoever fills this position has huge shoes to fill.

I don’t smoke weed anymore nor do I work at 7-11 but there is nothing wrong with working there even if I did. I wasn’t gifted with enough size and talent to be fortunate to play D-1 ball like the past and current Hornets. Fortunately I was gifted with a brain. I was a Hornet, always will be a Hornet, and I’ve got the civil engineering degree from Sac State hanging on my wall to prove it. And BTW nice name calling, nothing screams class like this cute little gem you just pulled out of your ass. Feel free to keep them coming because they don’t bother me, your internet tough guy routine isn’t doing you any favors. Please don’t attack all the other posters who don’t agree with your viewpoints, for the most part we try to hold civilized discussions here.

It's kind of sad that a former player and alumni board member or whatever has chosen to troll a message board and publicly slam the program.

SD, great job keeping things classy and informative as per usual.

We just have to hope that Sperbeck knows what he's doing, otherwise he's going to look really, REALLY bad next year if the team underperforms on defense...

No matter how honorable, outstanding, charismatic or experienced. We still finished 6-5.

If any of these men could walk on water and we had posted a 9-2 record, this might not have happened.

As a fan, no family relationship related to the program, I am sick and tired of losing. If replacing these men results in a 9-2 record next year, awesome!

Sucks it happened at Christmas time and that families are involved, but it is a business and at the end of the day, Sperbeck is CEO. If the brass in charge cant get us over the ho-hum hump of submediocrity, then finally something has to change.

I dont know Coach O or Parker. But from the stands, this was the most entertaining defense that I can ever remember after watching over 20yrs of Hornet football. If he can do that in one year, maybe we should hire some more Boise alumni.

I find it to be absolutely classless, tasteless, and deplorable for an alum, ex-player, and/or board member or whatever to slam a program/university that helped make them what they are today.

Sperbeck is making tough decisions, as he should be, with the interest of the football program in mind. Why would he do something he knew would destroy a program or make it weak? That's not his job! Sperbecks job is to win and generate money, not to keep people around he feels will impede his ability to do so.

I have faith in Sperbeck as do many others and as much as I disagree, for the time being, with his decision to let certain staff go, I feel that he is making the best decisions he can with whatever information or opportunities he has been presented with.

What boss doesnt have to make tough decisions like this? I like the fact that he is willing to make unpopular decisions based on what he thinks is best, it shows that he's not afraid to do whatever it takes to succeed. And no, I don't feel that Sperbeck lied or misguided any of the coaches he has let go, it's the nature of the "business." So far, all I've heard is one side of the story. Sperbeck hasnt given any details and until he does, I am going to accept the notion that this is what was best for the program.

I truly feel sorry for Baiz and Osterhout, they are class acts.

Very rarely do I do this, but it seems that I have no choice. I'm stepping in here as board administrator.

1. IMO, Coach Sperbeck has made a HORRIBLE choice. My PERSONAL opinion is naturally biased by my personal friendship with Coach Osterhout and Coach Baiz. My OFFICIAL word for the board, however, is that this is a choice Coach Sperbeck made within his prerogative as head coach. Time will tell whether or not it was the right choice.

2. General banter is not only authorized but encouraged here. What I will NOT tolerate, however, is ad hominem attacks as we have just seen against a valued contributor. Unsubstantiated bashing of coaches and players is likewise verbotten. Vague allusions to "I know someone in Place X" don't really cut it. While a new poster may not understand these (relatively few) guidelines, there is no excuse for verbally abusing ANYONE, particularly established posters who have shown their integrity over time.

Please keep these points in mind. If you seriously object to the move, you are free to send Coach Sperbeck and/or Dr. Wanless a scathing note. You can also express your opinion here WITHIN THESE GUIDELINES.

Now, back to the conversation at hand.

There will be no more personal attacks on posters here. The next one will be your last. Attack the post, not the poster!! You have been forwarned.....

the rat:

to answer your question i spoke with a current player who said sperbeck met with returning lb's and the d line bout the change and they were told the program was going in a different direction. he told me they were all to stunned given the credentials of both baiz and o to ask any questions and left the meeting quiet and suprised.

to all:

lets just say i have an inside scoop on things...

i agree with the statement made about sperbecks personality to control things. He has been that way since he got there. If you date back to gary uribe who was a great well respected coach, was let go cause he didnt wash sperbeck's feet. same with old lb's coach josh brown. All of the remaining coach at this time with no disrespect to them are sperbeck followers. parker is the same way. since he got there he has quickly lost the respect of individuals once he was placed in charge of the d. Did he put a good product on the field this year...yah but those werent his guys those were the maturation of baiz's coaching as well as the rest of the staff. when sperbeck realized who parker was and they began to think about what they could do to make things the way they wanted they made the decisions they did. Sperbeck's lack for character will catch up with him quickly. word of mouth travels quickly especially amongst local players and coaches.

in the end i wish the hornets the best but i think the recent coaching changes are going to haunt them in more ways then they know!

I couldn't agree more...Osterhout and Baiz will always be class Hornets and perhaps when the dust settles in a few years HHD will return, although I completely understand his decision.

The fact of the matter is that since the move to D1, Sac's football program has been very mediocre. This is not like we're talking about breaking up the Montana dynasty...we just had our first winning season in a decade. Sperbeck has improved the program, everyone can see that, and sometimes one has to take chances to make the next step. If there was infighting on the coaching staff, then something needed to be done...Nothing will defeat a team like watching the leaders fight amongst themselves. Unfortunately, two good and loyal people lost their jobs.

This team needs to start winning 9-10 games a year to get fans in the stadium and getting attention. If Sperbeck felt this needed to be done, then I think he has earned that right. It's time for him to put up or shut up...its his neck on the line. If the team ends up winning 10 games next year, the fact is that all will be forgiven and the community will be more engaged than ever.

Glad - you are dead on -in addition to the team meeting, I have come to learn that several star underclassman linebackers and d lineman thinking about leaving. I know in particular that 2 or 3 players already have their feelers out.

Marshall is a known flip-flopper...who ever is last in a conversation to convince him wins. In this case, Ms. Parker met with Marshall on Friday - and Coach O was let go the next morning.

I would also call myself an insider and if everyone on this board really knew how this all went down, my guess would be the support for Marshall and staff would be a little less rah rah...

Also want to apologize to those SDHornet - should not have called you an idiot or insinulated that you smoked pot or worked at 7-11, but you are still clueless around this topic and you don't know what really happened. If you did, you might as hot under the collar as I am (former player and builder of the program). It is really outrageous....

I understand your pain, and you have every right to it....I'm sure there are players who were partial to those two coaches that are emotional and are considering transferring. But in the end, are they really willing to sit out a year and waste the time they put into the program with no guarantees? Or transfer down to D-II?

Six_3, I appreciate everything you have put into this program...but the reality is that the football program just won 6 games this season and everyone considered it a smashing success. The culture needs to be changed and unfortunately some of the old guard and their ways of doing things might be upset by it.

If you love something, set it free.

This could be a blessing for both coaches as I am sure they would both make fine HC's somewhere.

After reading all this stuff and listening to my second hand sources I have a couple of thoughts.

IT’S ABOUT CONTROL FREAK PARKER.

Coach O will last just a few days on the job market before somebody gleefully scoops him up. :D

Coach Biaz will last just a little longer and maybe end up at another BSC school. (They're building a staff at ISU, although I like Biaz and his kids better than to send them to Pocatello in December)

Case may have a more difficult time because of a lack of experience and connections.

I have a hard time damming the Hornets to football hell. I still care about a lot of kids that have cast there lots with Sac State.

Biaz has worn a lot of hats around here in the past TWO DECADES. DC was one hat that didn’t fit well. He went back to being a position coach because he wanted to keep being a Hornet. Osterhout is an original Hammerhead. Everybody on this forum should know what that means. I refuse to say HC’s prerogative and understand how you dump family like that. Maybe Sperbeck plans on staying here forever and doesn’t want to compete for who will be the biggest institution? May he plans on leaving ASAP and is building the staff that will 100% go with him? Maybe I’m just upset that the kind of service Biaz and O put in doesn’t seem to count for enough.

Tell all the incoming recruits, It’s a business, not a family.

And, hey guys, SACBUZZ is fan forum. The burden of evidence is pretty low. Give each other a break on our sources.

Unfortunately six_3 is someone who is on this board all the time and decided that it was courageous to use a different alias in order to spread their venom. It will pass..... Give it time. I wish the best to Coach O and Coach Baiz and I hope that they have not had to read the venom that is being spread on this board by those who represent their interests. They are stand up guys and would probably be ashamed.
