Firing Coaches

we will miss those guys.the boys have a tremendous amount of respect for their coaching ability. they will move on and succeed.do not turn on the men playing or coaching on the team.good coaches make the tough decisions for the good of the team. let us hope our coach made the right move.judge with your eyes.a shake up is sometimes what the team needs. we will see.

We are Hornets for Life and will always have a connection, matter of fact my family loves SAC so much when my wife graduated from UC Davis Medical School (also career saves leader at UC Davis Womens Soccer) my Dad bought her a Sweatshirt that said SAC St. Medical School.

NICE! You are always welcome here.

By the way, I thought the PAM move at the time was brilliant. I know it's not PC to say, but you just happened to get caught. I loved it...

I was in high school at the time and when I saw Sac State on ESPN for the PAM incident, it actually got me interested in the school. I even had conversations with Mooshagian in 2003 before I decided to get my knee repaired and call it a career. While I still ended up attending Sac State, I honestly knew nothing about the athletics program until the incident.

6 years later, I have two degrees and nothing but good things to say about my experience. So thanks!

OK I always wanted to bring it up, but now PAM is being discussed, I can ask the question. If you are wearing Pam on your uniform, and you pancake a guy, does the guy being pancaked stick to the ground?

Newfan, do you really think the Offense is that big of an issue?

You say that "the offense is still stuck in the stone age" and slight Sperbeck for being his own OC (up 'til now), but do you realize we were 13th in the nation in scoring offense out of 125 FCS level schools with 32 PPG?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Sure we sometimes get frustrated with the occasional ill-timed fourth down attempt of barrage of WR screens, or questionable trick plays, but hell, it's hard to argue with the results...

Kedeezy - Have enjoyed your input the past couple years. One of my points in regards to defense was

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Regarding the offense, I thought the offense showed improvement this year but Sperbeck's coaching style has limitations - yes he has someone in the booth but he pays no attention to them; yes he has someone on the sideline with him but no one capable of challenging him when the game plan is not working. Coach Adams was a huge improvement over Coach Remington and you have to give Sperbeck credit for letting a long time assistant go in order to improve the offensive coaching staff. But one should look at the other offensive coaches as improvement would not be hard to achieve. Coach Osterhout was a very good coach but if you look across the line, you will find coaches that pale in comparison to his talent.

What is a D1 system? To me, its one that utilizes the entire coaching staff in the game management. It is a system where the QB's are involved in play calling and game management. Coach Sperbeck is the only D1 coach I've ever seen that does not utilize the back up QB's to support the guy on the field.

Coach Ault is an good example of a D1 coach - watch him coach a game and you'll know what a D1 coach is - he talks directly to his guy in the booth, with a QB to either side of him signaling plays to the guy on the field (no need for the starter to trot over to the sideline) - totally in control and utilizing all his people - teaching three QB's what he wants on every play. The teaching while trying to win is what college coaching should be all about. I don't see that in Sperbeck's system.

The entire team improved this year, the recruiting has been outstanding, the team chemistry is better - without the injuries this year, I believe the Hornets would have been conference champions and this team has the talent to challenge next season but can the coaching keep pace with the talent they have brought in?

i always wondered how good it worked? i mean, if i use a towel to wipe up some cooking oil or PAM, it doesn't slip through my hands after. and, wouldn't a running back just slide right off of them when they tried to tackle them?

i think they got busted because they used the Buttered-flavored PAM, and the fragrent scent gave them away!

As I recall rbs or receivers were the one's using it. They were caught because they stupidly sprayed it on along the sideline in full view of the crowd and I think they were even caught on TV. It's been a long time, don't remember the details but the Big Sky will never let us live it down.

it was the D-Linemen..i guess to prevent the O-Line from grabbing a hold of the jerseys. i would forward a link, but better to let that story fade away.

This is kinda random but everybody is reading this string so I’ll put this here.

Does anybody have as email or snail mail address for Mike Clemmons? If you do, could you message me through this board rather than post it?

P.S. I like to use PAM

Mike last coached at Sac City College, their AD might have contact information for him. He was at the Jr Rose Bowl team reunion at the Montana State(?) game.

The State Hornet reported that the A.D. instructed coaches and players not to talk about the firing of the four coaches until at least today, Friday. Maybe we'll learn more about it soon from people closer to the situation.

I've been waiting for an announcement notifying all of the new coaches.
It appears to me that Marshall fired his staff without any idea as to who he would hire to replace them.
That's bad news for all Hornets. He forgets that change can go two ways.
I wish him well, but man, we are in the middle of recruiting season and he lets go of that many coaches?
He must plan on doing all of his recruiting alone. Another thing that makes me believe that this was a personality conflict is the review of the season. The 2010 hornets never looked better on defense. After the new QB settled in they were very good on offense. We were all set for a Big Sky championship in 2012 and the coach blowes his cool. His new staff should have been together by now.
Good luck hornets.
M.D.

Here's something to chew on. There is talk that Coach Biaz quit after Coach Osterhout was let go. There is also talk that Coach Osterhout was responsible for bringing back many alumni, and their $$$$, to the program and there is speculation on what these alumni will do when they hear of his firing.

There will be dozens of assistants to choose from, football is still being played and turnover on most teams won't happen until Jan/2011. I would rather wait and see who is available instead of having 'somebody' already lined up. If they are available now high probability they aren't from winning programs.

Who cares? This program is bigger than one man. Baiz has been here 17yrs and we basically have sucked on defense during that time. Let it go, move on.

There many people who care, people who have had long time relationships with people like Baiz and Coach O, and the program. So, it is not easy to just let it go.

:!:

The difference between Baiz and Pielstick is that Baiz cared for his players. If a guy didn't fit 'Stick's "profile," that guy was effectively shunted to the side.

How does these coaches leaving the program affect recruiting this year is a major question that needs to be asked? Anyone else concerned?

I feel that it is something to think about but not a major concern. It just means that the remaining coaches will have to put in a little more time and maybe make a few more trips then they would have had to. But overall I dont think that the recruiting should suffer ...... at least I hope not lol

yeah, it's always contentious when someone gets let go, kinda like a high school breakup. he said, she said kinda stuff. we'll never ever truly know why the coaches were let go, but it's evident that these situations stir up alot of emotions, as shown by the posts on this board. and by the way, not to disparage coach o, but there are ALWAYS two sides to the story, and no one is ever completely innocent in personnel matters. sperbeck is driving the bus, and either you're on the bus, or asked to get off. time will tell if he is driving it in the right direction.

if what everyone says is true, coach o will rise to the top and be picked up by someone. and as time goes by, i think the boycott by HHD will loosen up a bit. the silver lining in all of this is that coach o will get to spend some quality time around his family during the holiday season, not a bad thing.

I am not saying don't care or brush it under the rug, just that it isnt fair to state that one or two people are the reason Hornet football is here and thriving. Yes, coach O and coach Biaz contributed positively as players, coaches and advocates, but to say since they were let go the Hornets are going to implode isnt fair to the hundreds of other people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make Hornet what it is today and what it will be tomorrow.

Yes there will be a number of assistant coaches available, but they will not be from winning programs.
Good programs keep their staff together.
