Five reasons why the Bears will/won't finish .500

Time to get this board going. Three weeks until camp opens.

Five reasons why the Bears WILL be around .500.

1. One player - Sean Rubalcaba. Obviously it's a team game, but he could make all the difference. I think it will be nice to have a fresh new QB and play calling. With Lobato the defensive db's could sit back and wait for him to throw the ball deep down field, and so many times they were just sitting back there waiting for a pick and he usually threw a couple pick six's per game. With Rubs the db's won't be able to do that. He's a threat to throw and run. I also like the fact that he was named captain as an underclassman. He's teammates trust him.

2. The defensive line. I think we should see an improvement here. I like what I've seen from Davion Anderson, Kyle Todd and Devonte Chapmen when he is healthy.

3. The receivers/tight ends. I have no idea what to expect, but we've got good young talent. I like Stephen Miller and I hope Samad Hinds proves to be a good recruit. Stimphel is a stud and should be all-conference. Also Leanord Rhodes and Christian Backes will show how good of recruits they were at tight end.

4. An improved defensive backfield. We brought in some help from JC schools like Chris Glover - he had an offer from UNLV. I think we had some major injuries and inexperience last season and that contributed to our poor performance last season. Kyle Griffen is a nice senior leader.

5. Defensive coaching. I'm hoping the experience Kerr brings pays off. My only fear is that the game has passed him by.

Five reasons why they won't finish above .500

1. The running game. Still no improvement and I'm not sure why coach Robinson still has a job. I believe we were second to last in rushing offense last season. Rob Holland and Graham split carries during the spring and Brandon Cartagana looks like he will be good with experience. I'm not sure we've improved there. Will Rubs be the leading rusher for this team?

2. The offensive line. They're horrible in just about every aspect of the game.

3. Special Teams. I would hate to think about a situation when we need a game-winning field goal. We have zero talent at that position. Also, kick-off team is horrible.

4. Linebackers. Leilon Willingham is there, but who else? Dominick Sierra is back from injury but who knows how he will be.

5. Coaching. The lack of respect the team has for this staff is telling.

There ya go.

Great summary Beardown! Here are my thoughts on the points you made-

Five reasons why the Bears will be around .500

1. Sean Rubalcaba- Definitely has the potential to be a game changer, but I thought he was a little inconsistent in Spring Camp. In particular, his accuracy needs to to improve a lot. Seems to miss a lot on the deeper balls. Although, the dual threat he presents could make up for that deficiency. I have heard that Brock Berglund is looking especially good in the player run practices this summer and there appears to be a general feeling that if he can stay healthy and perform well in fall camp he will seriously push Rubes for the starting job. Have also heard that the JC transfer, John Newsom is showing well. It sounds like the Bears may actually have some decent depth at the position for a change.

2. The defensive line- May be the strength of the team. Hopefully the DBs will hold down the back end.

3. Stephen Miller and Stimphel will be good. If some of the young guys can step up this group could be outstanding. Don't forget about Vander Velde at TE. He is a weapon as a receiver. Have heard that Rhodes has not yet reported to the team which is concerning to me. If he doesn't show then Backes will definitely need to have a breakout season as a RS Freshman.

4. DBs- It certainly can't get any worse. There is nowhere to go but up.

5. I hope Kerr returns to the form of his early years with CSU. If not, this will continue to be a serious problem

Five reasons why they won't finish above .500

1. I know Holland came out of the Spring as the #1, but I think Graham is going to have a breakout year. He showed flashes of his potential last year before going down with the injury. Cartagena has the potential to be a play maker as the change of pace guy.

2. Offensive line- they will be the reason the running game either succeeds or fails. They are young and spring camp is not enough time to gel. I will reserve judgement on their improvement or lack thereof until a few games into the season.

3. Special Teams- I think we are going to see dramatic improvement in the 3rd phase of the game. The kicker they signed is going to be a stud. He had something like 56 touch-backs last year and is extremely accurate. Hopefully he has the mental strength to take the step into college ball. I'm not sure but I think that the returners will be Elis Onic and Hakeem Deggs. They are burners. I mean we are talking 4.3 forty speed and they both were star returners in high school. Could be electric.

4. Linebackers are a definite question mark. Leilon is still injured from what I hear. Hopefully he can get back on the field and be a meaningful contributor.

5. Coaches- Team needs to make some big steps towards improvement this season. If they don't win a couple games early this team will be lost and Dunn will need to seriously consider making a change immediately after the season.

Love the QB competition. Berglund is a dual threat as well. Hard to believe that guy was a top 20 QB in the nation coming out of high school. I don't know if he was just overrated or he was in bad systems.

Great points by Beardown & 303Bear ! My major concerns are: #1-- coaching, Sorry Coach Collins but if there is not a significant turnaround with wins, things will need to change when the clock runs out, no two weeks later crap.
#2-- special teams need to improve 100% ! (they have been horrible)
#3--defensive backfield also needs a huge improvement, also have performed horribly, give way too much cushion for opposing receivers. #4-- improved play-calling, mix it up, throw in some trick plays, gamble-- we have nothing to lose ! #5--improve 3rd downs on both sides of the ball ( we could not make them and we could not stop them ) ! Go Bears !!

Good discussion.
Regarding special teams, do we have coaches specifically assigned to coaching punters, kickers, returners snappers?

5 Reasons why the Bears won’t win more than 5 games this year:

1) Strength and Conditioning: one word "Dinky". Dinky Williams is one of the worst strength and conditioning coaches in the nation. Have you seen or heard from players or past players in what their summer conditioning entails? It entails running up and down a hill 50 times or running diagonally across the field 10 times. Where is the agility, side to side movement drills or even just speed development drills? There is no knowledge and structure to their strength and condition program.

2) Coaching: This coaching staff is young and inexperienced. While there was hope with some good coaches such as: Chris Smith, James Jones, Jon Carpenter but oddly enough they all abandoned ship and went elsewhere. The current coaching staff is just too young and inexperienced. You get more of show from watching them get more excited about a 5 yard gain than the players.

3) Offensive Line: Don’t get me wrong we have some great talent on the o-line and they will probably be our bright spot when they can actually get a coach to help them. A good offensive line is in sync and all have great footwork and fire off the ball. When is the last time you saw a decent oline at UNC? Probably the 2010 year when Bedell was here, a direct reflection of coaching.

4) Quarterback: Everyone who reads this board or has anything to do with UNC football knows the starter should be Sean Rubalcaba. He is a terrific talent that is quick on feet, throws a good ball and has respect and leadership capabilities. BUT Coach Collins has made an awful decision before in starting Seth Labato over Dylan Orms his senior and I honestly wouldn’t put it past him to start someone new or in the same shoes as Seth. "cough cough" Brock Berglund. <---- Bad Mistake if he does.

5) The Head Coach: I could sit here and list a hundred reasons why Coach Collins shouldn’t have been hired (but was) a hundred reasons why he is a young coach over his head and a MILLION reasons why he just isn’t head coach material. If anyone can remember when they went to a game at UNC and didn’t hear Collins screaming at the top of lungs during one point of the game, I want to know. This is a man who preaches trust and hard work but yet has no respect from any of his players. Anyone want to take a guess why? He is flat out untrustworthy. I’ve never heard a head coach throw his players under the table more than this guy. I have never heard a head coach scream and yell and jump around more than this guy. I have never seen a team more deflated and defeated before the first kickoff all because of this guy...

PS: his pregame speeches are awful.

Are you an ex-player?

Dunn likes him because he "does things the right way" which I guess doesn't include winning...

Sadly, however , even if winning is not a consideration mr collins does not do things the right way. In order to do things the right way, sincerity and integrity must be a huge factor.
If we do manage a few wins this season, the damage has been irrevocably inflicted, and we are continuing to lose the interest and support of our community.

It's pretty cool going into a season as a booster thinking you might, maybe win one game (Houston Baptist?) I'm pretty excited! Where do I donate more money?

I believe Collins knows the situation and if we are not getting anywhere, he needs to move on as soon as the season is over, or maybe even mid season. We have experimented with him long enough ! We cannot continue with the same losing result year after year. On the flip side, after watching the Lexington Smith video, I am excited as hell for this team !

Damn, after reading BearDudes top (or bottom) five, I want to go throw up. I really want Collins to do well but as someone who tries to practice evidence based decision making, I just don't see the evidence taking me there. :(

I'm hoping we have a good season (around .500) so we don't have to search for a new coaching staff. I really like the young recruits this staff has assembled, and I don't want to lose any of those players.

Agreed. There is a lot of good, young talent on the team that has been recruited over the last couple of years. I'm excited to see them develop.

I think it might be unfair to rule out Berglund from starting. Yes, it's Rub's to lose but Berglund hasn't even taken a snap for the Bears.
