Flordia Gator QB coming to UNC

QB Brian Waggener has enrolled at UNC this semester and will compete for the QB spot after transfering from Florida. He's a big guy, 6foot6, 232Lbs. Let's hope he doesn't play like the last big qb we had about that size. Anyways, it looks like a good pick up! Here's the link to the trib article.

Here's Waggener's rivals.com profile complete with video:

I don't think we've seen a 3 star recruit yet here in football. I think the guard from Phoenix for basketball is a 3 star coming next year.

This is good news, either this guy steps up or Orms rises to the challenge and beats him out, either way UNC wins.

We haven't had a decent QB in years so let's hope either one the two pan out, we need it!

Does he just have 1 year left though? Jamathan Lyle was also a 3 star recruit, not sure why he didn't play last year.

It is time to go with a mobile quarterback like Orms. If you don't have a sold o-line...you want mobility. Why are coaches infatuated with 6'6" statues anyway???...the college game requires mobility. There will be some growing pains, but you got to get your young QB some experience...there is a reason this guy has been at 3 schools already.

Well the best QB will win the spot. The Trib made it sound as if he's already annointed the starter. That's not how Downing coaches. I like Orms mobility and that's probably what we need right now but obviously this kid has a lot of talent. He probably would still be in Gainsville but had a bunch of injuries. I wonder how he ended up here. We don't even recruit in the south. Which coach does he know? Downing's contacts are mostly in the midwest and west.

This is the biggest name to come to UNC since Cutlip.

As for Lyle I think he battled injuries last year quit a bit.

Also, let's be realistic here, both will more than likely get plenty of playing time. I have to assume we will struggle again so I'm guessing each will get pulled and replaced with the other more than once. We saw that pattern last year with Downing until he finally settled on Braizeale after like 6 games.

I just hope our o-line does a better job. Downing has stock-piled the roster with linemen so hopefully we'll develop some depth there.

Also, running game has got be better. Nigel Nelson (2star recruit last year) must step up.

These two things have got to be better no matter who our qb is.

I'll remain hopefully optimistic about this guy but it seems pretty rare that these transfers work out although it has happened--Brad Pyatt for instance. The last QB transfer I remember was that transfer from CSU, not Cutlip, mayber Boyer, who started here for like two years. He was the start of our run of horrible QB's and as bad as he was, he was head and shoulders above the one's we've had here for a few years now.

I would at least like to see Orms in it and I hope they dont just give this guy the starting job. I think part of our problem at QB is that the position is a mery-go-round. We have not had a consistant starter for years, and many guys transfer into the program with only a year or two of eligiblity left, so there is no time for them to really get into a system and develop good partnerships with receivers. Time in a program can make an ok QB much much better, because he knows the system like the back of his hand and will execute much better.

However unlike DB, at least this transfer has put up some good numbers in college.

Jon Boyer was not a terrible quarterback. He was a D-II(walked on at CSU) player whom in his first year starting was put in a tough situation but did improve quite a bit. He was all conference two years in a row also. Haven't had one of those in ...well since Boyer. Pyatt tested positive for steroids and was dismissed from the program by the NCAA so we only got a year out of him. So there aint any transfers that work out.

This all sounds like the same type of hype for Breazeale and Valahogeorge. Lets slow down and see what happens in the spring. But my guess is if Orms is as good as advertised he will earn playing time through his performance. Both will play if this "Florida Gator not as good as Tebow" guy is not another overhyped robo quarterback. Personally Im pulling for Orms! Lets build around this kid instead of taking chance after chance on the most important position on the team.

Bear2003, you are correct in your assessment of the Q.B. hype. Breazeale and Vlahogeorge were made to look like saviors to the program and they both were less than stellar. I look at a kid that has moved from college to college as being a problem child. Why this hasn't raised a red flag for the coaches is beyond me. I say we give the kid a shot in the spring alongside Orms but if he even fumbles once, we send him packing.
