From Football Scoop

This is impressive:
John Wristen, a former all-conference quarterback at Colorado State University-Pueblo, enters his third season as the ThunderWolves head football coach.

Facing the momumental task of forging a football program from the ground up when he accepted the job in July 2007, Wristen has answered the call, leading the Pack to a 4-6 record in 2008, the fourth best record in NCAA Division II history for a startup program in its first season of competition.

He upped the ante with a 7-4 record in 2009, including a big road win over defending-RMAC Champion, Chadron State, and halting the Eagles' 28-game RMAC winning streak. The seven wins marks the third-most wins in NCAA Division II history for a startup program in its second season.

The ThunderWolves' 11-10 mark over its first two seasons of competition is also the third-best record among NCAA Division II startup programs.

He finished 9-2 this season meaning his 1st 3 seasons in a start-up program, they went 20-12. Amazing. Not sure how that would translate to UNC but he seems to know how to win.

That is impressive. Still a bigger fan of Stitt at Mines but that is still impressive. Amazing that you can start a program from scratch and go 9-2 in 3 years.

Stitt runs the spread which I know is the hot thing at Florida and Boise State but I hate it, we tried that in '07 and '08 and it was a train wreck. Wristen at least has shown he can take chicken shit and make chicken salad.

Stitt is a stiff! He is not a good fit for UNC. He is coming from an elitist school in Mines, sure he has won some games, but he is not a blue collar guy that would fit into Greeley. There are not enough country clubs around for Stitt.

Ya I'm starting to like the Wristen guy, going 9-2 in your third year and starting from scratch is really impressive. I know its the RMAC, but still. Plus he has beating Chadron St, which Downing couldn't do.

What exactly would you be basing that on?

OK, I have been reading and not posting. But enough is enough!!
To say that Stitt is a Stiff is so off that I had to speak my mind.
Stitt would be a GREAT fit for this program. He was here at one time as an assistant Coach
he comes from the Joe Glenn coaching tree!
John Wriston not from the that tree, is another GREAT fit.
What this program needs is someone who understands Greeley and UNC. Who will remind the players
of the PRIDE and TRADITION this school once had. I have been watching the BIg Sky for a few years and have seen every team play at least 3 times not all gainst UNC I have actually gone and watched the NAU vs MSU, PSU vs EWU. The talent level in the Big Sky is equal to the mighty NCC days. Trust me, it is. Say what you want that it is not. I have seen them both up close.
Marty English would be great, but he would be taking a huge pay cut to come back. Be ready for Stitt to be the next guy. Back him and support him, back and support the next coach period. If you do not you have no right to Bitch about a thing. UNC - University of National Champions. Will rise again!!!

No on Stitt! Just two play off appearances!? And that's in a weak D2. Plus, the spread offense sucks. We tried that and didn't work. I like Peterson as my number 1 choice.

If you want a guy that only hangs out at the Country Club, then Stitt is your guy. He is too uptight for Greeley, need a Blue Collar guy. Also, look at the Mines roster, only 1/2 comes from Colorado. We need a guy that can recruit this state and bring back the pride of UNC with CO players.

We need to hire a guy from a winning program that has head coaching experience building a program. The resources are there, just need to maximize what we have.

Not sure I buy all this on Stitt.

A graduate of Doane College (Nebraska), Stitt received various accolades as a running back and a return specialist - including All-State College Offensive Player of the Year in 1985 - when he played for the Tigers in the mid-80’s. Stitt also played left field for the Doane baseball squad and competed in the 4x100m relay on the track & field team.

Stitt returned to coach at his alma mater after receiving his master's degree in Physical Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1989. The offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for four years at Doane, Stitt produced three NAIA Division II All-Americans and 19 All-NIAC offensive players during his tenure. Stitt went on to coach at Austin College (Texas) from 1994 to 1999, serving as the assistant head coach and the coordinator of offense and special teams, before he moved on to Harvard.

Spending much of his time in Greeley and Crete Nebraska makes me think that he knows exactly what small rural towns are like.

Haven't heard much about this guy yet, but Jed Stugart needs to be talked about. He fits the mold of a guy who understands Greeley, he recruited lots of in state as well as Texas kids when he was here before.
The article in the paper a few days ago brought his name up, and look for him to have a chance IMO.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an un-official list of candidates. The article last week in Tribune was just speculation. I know there's some on this board who have connections and their mum...speak up!

Yea, we are all getting itchy for some clues. Whats Schuman upto?? Go right to the source Matt. Go see Dick for some answers!

Peterson over Stitt? That would be a typical Hinrichs move.

It is kind of quite. Should pick up now with a lot of teams seasons ending and the holidays behind us. Anyone hear who is on the search committee?

Yes, Stitt does only have two playoff appearances, but remember that at the School of Mines. The academic admissions standards alone cut his recruiting pool at least in half. I'd say any playoff appearances are damn impressive considering what he has to work with.

Also, the spread offense sucks? Is that why the top 3 college football teams in the nation run it? Thanks for clearing that up. Darnell's spread didn't work here because he had about four plays in his playbook, when run properly the spread is easily the most lethal offense out there.

Finally, if we hire Peterson, we might as well have kept Downing.

The spread offense sucks!! Have seen what the #1 and #2 teams in the country are running!!! You are kidding right. Florida won 2 National titles running the spread. LAst I checked Brian Kelley was at Grand Valley State. Running the same offense he is now that beat us in 2002. You spread them out and run the ball. When they add a guy to the box you throw the bubble screen or drop back pass. No Huddle spread offense would be great for UNC at over 5,000 ft elevation.
