Game 11: (RV) Sac State (6-4, 4-2 BSC) vs. Idaho (4-6, 2-4 BSC)

What a brutal first half. Wasn't expecting a 6-3 field goal kicking contest.

Williams has been terrible. We should be up by much more than 3. The defense has held up better than expected thus far.

My biggest question though is...did Golden 1 only sponsor the first downs for the first quarter? Since the second quarter started, it has been "Sacramento State first down"

The defense played well.

Are they a better road team?

Williams redeemed himself. Seems to pass well when the game is on the line and he has to pass. Nevada, Montana, tonight. Tough to figure him out.

Jeezus. Which team are you rooting for? Nothing but negativity from you most the time.

IDK where you got that image from, because not one of the available replays showed anything that clear. Probably a photoshop job from an Idaho fan.

Regardless, even if the call on the field was wrong — they couldn’t confirm and reverse it based upon any of the available replays. And there’s no guarantee that the Hornets wouldn’t have still thrown a TD pass on the next play or two from the 20 yard line, as they converted 4th and 13 with a 20 yard pass just 2 plays earlier.

And if people are going to focus on bad calls that affect outcomes, every single game is littered with dozens of them spread throughout. We can start and end with holding penalties that occur pretty much every single play of every game but are subjectively called (and not called) throughout.

Idaho, their fans, and their HC can go kick rocks.

Worst half of offensive football in a long long while.

They moved the ball well, but just continue to make too many mistakes with drive killing penalties and questionable play calls.

The fire drill FG attempt at the end of the half was completely avoidable. Coming off back-to-back timeouts, the players should have been much better prepared to handle that situation.

On 3rd down, they’d have had a better chance to get everyone back to the LOS to spike the ball than to try to switch out players and rush the FG attempt.

And what type of play call was that with :18 remaining and no times outs? Was it a QB jump pass from the 17 yard line or a designed QB draw?? Whatever the hell it was supposed to be was high risk and they clearly weren’t prepared to kill the clock immediately after.

If they had managed that situation better and also elected to kick FG’s on their two turnovers on downs, even just 2 FG makes out of 3 has them only needing a FG at the end of the game. 3 for 3 has them icing the game with a 2 score lead.

Despite all the gaffes, the good news is they found a way to get it done. Doesn’t matter how now. It’s still #7 in the W column.

Now go get #8, a Causeway win and hopefully a postseason birth.

There’s a better guarantee that without caution to the wind cavalier play calling (two 4th down red zone stops and keystone cops fire drill blocked FG attempt), we would have been up by 9pts and this self induced drama was unwarranted.

23-20 Hornet win over the Vandals. Not going to nit pick a whole lot as a win is a win and it feels damn good to see this program snatch a win from the jaws of defeat. Also the Twitter meltdown over "The Call" and how it triggered a certain fan base over "The Catch" is just icing on the cake, I'll touch more on that in a separate post.

The Hornet offense had a very uninspired first half of play. This was the first time all season that this offense bogged down in the redzone on almost every visit. I like Coach Marion's aggression on the 4th down plays and the play calls were with our typical smash run plays. Credit to the Idaho defense for getting stops on those critical plays. Cardell Williams (14/18, 176 yds, 1 TD, 8 car, 10 yds, 1 TD) had an efficient night in the air and a game winning run. Aside from his lone poor decision on a pick that was overturned, he took care of the ball which is most important in this style of offense. At this point in the season, the criticism about his game was just greedy and, like at Reno, Williams came through in the clutch. Stop doubting this kid. The calls to see someone else get reps at quarterback are completely off base and that ship has sailed. I liked how Coach Marion dialed up some quick and short passes to the outside to build up his confidence and hope we see some of that next week. Ernest Campbell (6 rec, 61 yds, 1 TD) had a big touchdown but Jordan Williams (2 rec, 38 yds) had the most impactful catches of the night as one came on a 4th and 13 on the game winning drive and the ref assisted catch set up the game winning score.

The Hornet run game was good but not great. The Hornets struggled in critical moments (that 4th down stop on the 2nd to last possession should have cost us the game) and the red zone meltdowns at this point in the season is unacceptable. That goes for both the execution and head scratching play calling at that end of the field. Nonetheless, JaQuail Smith (14 car, 122 yds) and Rodney Hammond Jr (26 car, 120 yds) had strong games.

Hornet defense stepped up for the most part. Idaho had the defense figured out in the 4th quarter but holding a team to 20 points is a good performance. The defense didn't give up any big plays over the top and aside from containment issues on Idaho's mobile quarterback, the open field tackling was sufficient. Oscar Moore (10 tak, 1 TFL) led the team in tackles and Lamont Johnson-Burrell (1 INT) snagged the lone turnover of the game.

Grant Meadors (3/4 FG, 2/2 PAT) came through on field goals. I don't fault him for the blocked field goal at the end of the 1st half as that whole play sequence was a complete clusterfvck and that falls on Coach Marion.

At the end of the day, a win is a win and that is all that matters. The Hornets now get to gear up for a win and in Causeway and the Hornets are heading into it with a lot of momentum.

Stingers Up!

My thoughts on "The Call" are pretty straight forward. The refs blew the call based on the bonus sideline footage that surfaced after the game. I have yet to see the replay of the game so I don't know what angles the refs had to review. That said, some of the Twitter meltdown comments are pretty entertaining given the comments aimed at us less than a month ago.

It's hilarious that we saw all the Hornet haters jump on Coach Marion's complaints about the officiating as he ate the $10k fine for stating the blatantly obvious officiating disparity against us all season long culminating in the Montucky game. That followed up with the calls being severely diminished over the last 3 weeks and now a total reversal of the narrative in that now the refs were purposefully rigging the game so we get a win. Glorious, absolutely glorious. So were/are we really an "undisciplined" team or was it something else? How often do "undisciplined" teams clean up their act in one week? Tough questions to answer for those that are pushing the new narrative.

So was this game given to us and should we feel bad about it? Lol, no, absolutely not. Idalol shat down their leg on that 4th and 14 conversion they gave up a few plays earlier and had ample opportunities to secure the win. They can hold this "L" indefinitely as they watch us celebrate a win in our final home Big Sky Conference game.

We had a game ripped from us in Reno by poor officiating earlier this season and we soldiered on. And don't get me started on all the times we've been on the shit end of the stick wrt blown officiating calls over our nearly 30 years in the Big Sky Conference. I couldn't care less about the uproar and complaints from other fan bases about officiating now. But if they want to get all worked up and dox the BSC Commissioners home address then by all means, good luck with that approach.

I did particularly enjoy that "The Catch" was brought into this discussion by the Montucky fans that are still seething over that loss we handed them in 2022. The irony here is that both these plays occurred in nearly the exact same spot on the field. The difference being is that there is zero evidence that "The Catch" should have been overturned. Maybe both of those fan bases can cry into a little brown stein about how badly the BSC rigged those games in favor of Sac State. Yes, I know, it's a completely comical and ridiculous stance that any long term Hornet fan that has endured the egregious calls against us over the last 3 decades understands.
