Game Day Thread

Clearly something was going on injury-wise with Barriere. Is that a question inappropriate for Paul to ask Coach postgame? Still, feel for the guys and proud of them for their efforts.

Barriere has broken

WTF is wrong with him? He sucked ass in the 4th quarter. The Eags GAVE THAT GAME AWAY. :ohno:

The pick 6 rattled him bad. He was 2nd guessing everything, panicking.

Right, he was never really the same after that. Barriere had 5 passing TDs but he failed to LEAD his team in the 4th quarter. Idk if he was injured or rattled but he’s got to be better bc that 2nd half of football was scary bad.

It was a pleasure watching these young men play in person yesterday. Sometimes old men ruin it. I put this squarely on the coaches.

Lot of emphasis on EB3 during the meltdown. Eric got hurt early and gamely kept efforting, the WHOLE team did. Very hostile environment and it felt like, at times, the team was facing 16 with the ghost refereeing. I am unhappy with Shoemaker, disappointed in Best and befuddled by Ena. Personal groupings made nearly no sense in the second half, our best weapons were on the sidelines during several critical plays, the middle of the field was open and we threw ~2 slants in the second half, we sacked Cooper like one time, had Tre Weed covering their best WR most of the second half and on and on. Eastern was the superior team on the field. Football games are a microwave, so many things happening in a compressed space and time. Coaches lost perspective. It happens.

I know this one has to hurt, hope they can bounce back now the real season begins.

Eric took a couple of big time shots, one early on in the game and then one in the 4th. I really don’t think he was himself after that first big hit.

We dominated in every statistical category in this game. I don’t know how you do that and lost a game. The only thing I can chalk it up to is a lot of new coaches and a lot of youth on the field. Both of those really showed on the field yesterday. It’s not a talent thing...we’ve got loads all over. Huge upside with this team...just hope they can put this loss behind them and do some good things in conference play.

I suspect conditioning played a factor too. That coupled with a very long game, delayed start, long flight, a fair amount of heat and humidity can lead to a 4th quarter melt down.

I think the coaches may have changed too much from what worked last year. Barriere was successful just making delayed draws right up the middle last year and often busted them for big gains. Have we done it once this year?

But defense is where the question marks are even more apparent. How many times can we get confused with our coverages? You can't score 45 and lose... ever. And worst of all, when they had the ball and we were up 3 with a few minutes left, did anyone on the planet think we'd actually get a stop? It was a movie we've all seen before. The hard pressing defense of last season seems like a distant memory.

A team can score 45 points and lose anytime the opposing team scores more than 45 points. 7 of our points were the result of a gift kickoff return and while a well executed special team maneuver, and the speed and determination of Mr. Dorton, that 7 point gift did little to wear down the Gamecock defense or otherwise establish our offense. Our offense then subsequently established its superiority, but the defense soon "relaxed" a bit, or was it the defensive sets and plays called considering and responding to what was occurring on the other side? Bad luck calling plays and sets? Could be? I still wonder why EB3 didn't scrimmage in practice prior to our first game, and is he playing hurt(??) or at a lower confidence level or distracted from achieving the confident dominance he exhibited last season. Is his natural athletic ability being over coached? Saturday's slippage provided the opportunity for some winning education this week. Looking forward to seeing great Eagle football in Moscow. Go Eags!

Hey guys... I certainly didn’t want to be the A-Hole that replied as soon as the game was over. You have a new fan in me and many other JSU supporters. I hope you don’t mind me leaving my perspective here, but I do appreciate your willingness to read it!

1. I travel to Spokane twice a year and love it! I make a point to drive over to Cheney for the atmosphere and usually eat locally. I talk to a few folks about EWU and football, but what I love most about visiting is the beautiful campus, location, smell of the air, and your students who can actually carry on a conversation about their education. I feel the same way about JSU, but our smell is of tall pines and oaks of the Talladega National Forest, nearby. I love seeing the red field and will sometimes just grab a sandwich and park up on the hill... I am from Montana, grew up a Griz fan, now follow JSU and UM, but I have been keeping track of EWU football well before this year. You guys were really really good! Please know that...
2. We were very impressed with the smack of the mouth you gave us in the first half, I mean, holy hell that was impressive. We couldn’t find a way to come back against SLU, but the SLU defense is on a different level than FCS it seems. Your defense was really good upfront, but I think our coaches drew your LB’s and secondary out enough so Cooper could at least run when he needed to. If your LB’s stayed home then I don’t think he gets the yards. The way I see it is we had to play against your secondary to win the game. We had a true freshman, #92-Jackson Latrell, sack Barriere on a crucial play, and then #2-Tre Threat, sacked him down on the 3 yd line. Without those sacks, I’m not sure what wouldn’t happened.
2. That Targeting call was BS and we all knew it. NOBODY in the stands knew why the officials called a time out, and when they announced it I knew it was BS. Our band did the obvious “good-bye” chant, and #22 walked off with class! For the record, every band is going to yell that. I have never seen a player walk off like he did...
3. The humidity, to us southern folk, was better than past days, but it was still smothering. Players on both sides took to the sidelines for replenishment, but the cramps for EWU were more noticeable.
4. The officials sucked, on both sides, but you guys had some no-calls for sure! I saw at least 7 holds that weren’t called. 3 for EWU and 4 for JSU. One noticeable no-call for me was when #4-Trae Barry, grabbed your CB by the shoulders and threw him down, and #2-Michael Matthews, caught a pass in the flat and broke through a missed tackle to score. I still can’t believe we didn’t get called for that. The biggest no-call you had, from what many talked about as it happened, was the no-call PI when one of our S’s, #13-Traco Williams, ran your WR out of bounds and all the way to the wall. I saw two angles on it, initially, and then I watched a side angle where it looked like they were trying to slow each other down and couldn’t unlock their arms. Has to be the reason why because how does one of the most penalized teams in FCS the last 6 years have 14yds in penalties? We also called BS as you guys did.
5. Your players and coaches were very respectful, the players families were also very nice, and it was an honor to have EWU come here to play. You will for sure win out the rest of the year, as I think we will also, but maybe we see each other again in November? Who knows...

We were very happy to meet some of you, and I look forward to coming up in 2021 and meeting more!

Have a great rest of the season!
