Gameday Thread Eastern 35 vs Montana State & Refs 38

Can we find a new defense at halftime? Is there anyone with eligibility left in the stands?

Just for fun, watch the difference between Montana State tackling in space and us. There was a play where MSU’s backup QB ran and Smith (a fucking defensive captain) had him dead to rights and didn’t even attempt to tackle him. Watching us play defense is like a perpetual clinic on everything wrong that you can do. Do we even have linebackers?

I sure hope we play better in the second half. Despite it being a competitive game, this is extremely hard to watch.

What is it that goes wrong with defense year in and year out? Do we just have the wrong philosophy for evaluating talent? Is there a deep rooted cultural flaw in the facility?

I don't get it. I wonder if JC Sherritt will come do some consultations.

I was thinking the same thoughts about linebackers. The dline looks OK, they seem to be filling their assignments at least. But when a play gets to the second level, the linebackers have been a clown show.

On a more positive note, Talkington is doing really well and I love seeing EWU continue its great quarterback play.

Go back and watch the play where they scored their last TD. Eli Doyle is completely unblocked and steps into the gap. He's completely untouched. And instead of hitting the ball carrier, he lies down on the field (this isn't a joke, he falls flat on his stomach for some such fucking reason) and the RB jumps over him. Is that what defense has come to? We're basically no better than an obstacle course.

If you wonder what that smell is, it's the first 3rd quarter offensive possession...

Down by 3 and the offense comes out like Eag's need to score 40 to get back in the game.

It appears to me on 3rd down the DL is trying to manage the line of scrimmage instead of penetrate which relies on the LB's and safeties to run to the ball. Anyone know where they are on those plays?

That’s probably the game. I just don’t see this defense stopping them. Not even once.

As unfunny as that is, the offense has clearly lost the thread with several 3 and outs in a row since the 2nd quarter. GT is very inaccurate, WR's aren't working to get open, no play is past 10 yards and the running game has been abandoned. Can't wait until 3rd down to try and run the ball IMO.

Eags score... running this offense..
