Gameday Thread PSU 38 @ Eastern 35

One team came ready to play today and the other team is Eastern... Could this team be in more disarray?

I'm calling it... this team has given up.

Called it too soon. Glad the team let some Pride Fuck With Them...

Eastern was better than Portland State. But it was another situation where we found ourselves in a big hole because the defense was so disorganized. Do our defensive coaches bother to watch film? It feels like we've been playing from behind all season, and a lot of that is because we give up so many TDs early in games. The film on Eastern is so obvious that every team is going to be committed to running on the vast majority of their plays. Why we seem so unprepared to deal with a rushing offense every week is absurd... of course a team is going to run the ball on the worst rushing defense in human history.

The Idaho game from the Spring season laid a clinic on how to beat Eastern that darn near every team we've played since has used. All they did was snap it to their QB and have him find space and know Eastern can't tackle and that the LBs will go MIA. It's been like 20 games and we still haven't corrected those same mistakes.

!) We have alot of injuries. 2) We have no backups ready (that's recruiting and coaching)).

3) We have a great punter. 4) We have no placekicker.

5) I injured my neck from shaking it so hard/often the first half thinking this team couldn't beat a high school team (well they could but it'd be a close game).

6) Second half had flashes of the EWU team I use to know.

7) At 3;45 left in half Kekoa Visperas threw his headphones of took everything in his pockets out and hastily started warming up putting his helmet on. 8) Next offensive series he didn't go in and many fans where I was sitting noticed same thing as I did collectively yelling "put 16 in".

9) I really really really wish we had pulled that off.

I’m just curious for those who went to the game, did we have the band there? I didn’t see the band on ESPN today, and the last four games I’ve been to were band-less. The environment looks pretty bland in Cheney. It certainly looks like attendances are way, way down over the last 3 seasons. I went to both the Tennessee State and the last home game against UNI last year and the crowds were terrible. I haven’t seen a well attended game since Montana last year in person.

Band was there and attendance was off from all other games. Cheerleaders were good and had students and fans up best they could. Most everyone were in shock. Can't remember witnessing a game like that...ever. In the good ole days it wasn't such a shock if an ass whooping happened but it's been a long time since the last time. Dopa, you and i bout the same age so you may know what I mean.

Managed to watch Sac St. vs Idaho and was a good game. Idaho came back but Sac St. stepped up and finished. Still believe Sac.St. best team.

UC Davis beat Cal Poly 59-17. We aren't very good I'm afraid.

Somehow we have the highest price tickets in the Big Sky conference, and with our poor play, anyone on the fence about going to the games won’t…it’s unfortunate…we are lucky to be 1/2 full right now

I've been going to Cheney to football games since about 1995. Don't think I've missed any games in Cheney and traveled to many if not most away games. Leaving a game early has always been against my personality, I was all in.
Yesterday for the first time ever we left the game early.

Not that you're observations about outcomes are incorrect, it's where to put the blame. There is only a single constant... Best. It's going to be hard for some to see it since they supported his elevation from day 1 and like his patter. Some of the elements people have pointed too about the state of Eastern include talent level (nearly all of the players would be playing at other BSC schools IMO. Eag's may not have a Kupp or VA right now), other coaches (which have turned over constantly since Best), administration (granted this is a disaster), local area enthusiasm (linked back to where EWU has and hasn't made investments and common academic whinging about sports programs). Am sure there are others.

I've been disappointed for years but know that is a part of my makeup. I've never understood Eastern's lack of situational awareness, misuse of players positionally or the inability to recognize an issue and show improvement (last year's special teams debacle comes to mind). Those are the axes I grind regularly. A filter change is in order.

Nolan Ulm and Efton Chism should be on the field every play... Only two WR's who know how to get back to the ball and Ulm can and will sky...

There is no process... but you do you Kylor.

Ive wondered how much pain/torture i could withstand before spilling the beans whimpering like a baby begging to stop. swx replaying ewu vs psu game at 12;30. im having wife duck tape my wrists to arms of chair, neck to back of chair, eyelids tooth-picked wide open and a hot dog and ice cold beer just out of reach with the volume up full. can't imagine lasting long before after kickoff before pleading to wife to cut the bonds.
On second thought she may use my vulnerable state to ask some long wondered questions or even newer ones like if ive bought any new guns lately.
Yeah, bad idea nevermind.

I agree! That was a pathetic first half, but Eastern finally started trying and began coming back. It was embarrassing watching Eastern lose to a bad PSU team, at home! Losing those kinds of games can have a lasting effect on the program and the fanbase. With all do respect, the coaching staff needs to get that crap corrected NOW!
Is anyone else surprised with the play of QB, GT? Some big missed throws, some misreads, and he missed tons of opportunities where he could’ve tucked the ball and ran. Anyway, spilled milk.

We've all likely played on teams where coaches player decisions often effect the outcome of games/contests. I've lost a championship when the coach made an inexplicable pitching decision late in a game. The players knew it was a bad choice and it effected their play and lost a 5 run lead late. Said pitcher walked 7 or 8 batters in two innings and failed to field at least two balls.

Sad story aside; GT's lack of consistency isn't a positive attribute and I can't stress enough how poor some of the play calling was down the stretch late. Players know and Eastern's slow starts could be traced back to these decisions. BTW, let me know when a Best coached team has actually corrected an issue mid season, not saying it hasn't happened, but sure don't recall seeing it. Not playing next years QB's is unforgivable to me at this point.

Not to drag things out but… that’s what I was thinking. Eastern is officially out of the playoff race, Sacramento State is 8-0, literally NOTHING can be accomplished in the 2022 season. Why not get those guys in there and give ‘em some playing time? Get those guys some experience so 2023 doesn’t end up being a repeat of ‘22. BTW, If GT is the best Aaron Best has now, wtf is sitting on the bench!? Best had FOUR YEARS to find a replacement for EBIII… what happened? I say sit GT down for the remainder of the season and let some young QBs take over for the rest of the season. Best better dig in that transfer bin this off season, or else we could be looking at a similar record in 2023.

I feel like Talkington is being a whipping post. The dude accounted for 450 yards last week, and that was despite having a number of balls dropped. We've got a hundred problems to clean up, and QB play is like the 99th of those to worry about. We're not always going to have stellar QB play.

Through 8 games, our leading rusher has 338 yards. We haven't had a single RB able to take a volume of carries in a game since McPherson. Hell, we can't even keep a running back on the field for an entire drive. Take a look at what sac state is doing with Skattebo and tell me how valuable a guy like that would be for us.

Still, without any doubt whatsoever, we are primarily handicapped by our defense. They are so ridiculously miserable that there's no path forward without dramatic improvement. Watch us even line-up, there are times we're so lost that we'll have just one player outside of the tackle box on the weak side. And even with 2 LBs and a front 4, we can't stop a RB coming up the middle. We can't cover, we can't tackle, and we lack any kind of physicality required. I think the very first play of the entire season, when Tennessee State's RB just wandered around waiting for our entire defense to swing and miss before running free to the endzone, was almost a synopsis of the whole season in one play. There's been zero improvement at all on that side of the ball. You can at least say our offense has some glimpses of cohesion, but the defense is an unadulterated mess at all times.

FCS Rushing defense---- there are 123 FCS teams, here's the ass-end of the division. We aren't just dead last out of 123, we're dead-last by 55 yards per game. Our total defense is the worst in the FCS, and yard per play defense is worst in the FCS. The numbers are completely appalling. There's no way to spin numbers this bad.

Point being, without some improvement here, all the talk about QB play is rendered useless.
