GET THE STUDENTS OUT

I'm challenging WSUSA, SAA (PPAK), LDSSA, Newman Center, SAC, and all the other groups (yes, you too Ambassadors) to get as many students out to the remaining games as possible. We need great student crowds this week. It's montana's week!!

1000K students, loud and in charge, would be great. Also, what is with the chants/cheers? Why won't anyone do anything? Or take charge and lead?

Tal,

I am not sure why, but this year on campus nothing really is being done to support the mens basketball team. In years past there have been signs and wooden signs that were in good locations scattered throughout campus. This year I have only seen 1 sign promoting the wsu/usu game, and no others. It was basically on a 12" x 16" black and white paper and taped to a white sign holder. The usu on the paper was in size 12 font.... :? Also, in years past I have received e-mails about upcoming games and seen things in the Union Building. I feel as though the student promotion is going very soft. The only reason my friends and a few others get to the game is because I have to send out a mass text to them informing them. If not for me, they would never know (and they are all full-time wsu students who spend a lot of time on campus). It always shocks me when they say to me, "wait, there is a game tonight?'

As for the student cheers... It is honestly an embarrassment hearing and watching the "turnover" chant... Its way old and only 15 students do it.. The hand motions are gay looking, and I have over heard many students that think the chant is "high school" and they do not want to "look gay" while doing it. If you notice at games, its weak and the players on the court probably do not even hear the chant anyway. Honestly, other than those 15 students doing it, who likes that chant anyway?

Now that classes are back in session, no reason why we shouldn't get 1000k students to the games this week. The only problem is letting the students know about the games. Word of mouth just doesn't cut it.

Also, doesn't the PPAK leaders get some sort of tuition for promoting and getting students to and involved in the games? Maybe they can use that tuition money as a half time promotion like the used to do. You know, the one where the lucky students gets tuition money if they are in attendance? I like that idea... :-D

Ever since the Alumni Association got rid of the best adviser, nothing has been done to get students involved. I remember the days of going to the alumni center to watch a road game and the room would be standing room only. Now, they don't even televise those games. As for no signs being placed around campus, I call pure laziness. It is time consuming to paint the big wooden signs but they are rewarding in the fact that students see them and that gets them excited for the upcoming game/s.
The marketing folks need to get off of their lazy Arses and do something. We have the best player in the nation grazing our court, I see no reason why we do not have at least 10,000 fans in the Dee. It is a shame our team has to go through louzy attending games. So I am with Talhad on this and calling out all of the students leaders on campus. get off of your fudgen arses and do sosme good for our team, lets fill the Dee this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree - get off your lazy butt and get something done!
What are you guys doing with all the split the pot money? If you are wasting that money, give it back to the Wildcat club!

tal, i am not sure if this forum is the right place to be calling out the students organizations as they probably arent reading it here. you should make some calls, but be positive about if if you try n make a differnce. anything you can do will help. can't hurt to try and help us get a bigger student section.

also i have heard that the purplepak no longer exists. all we need is some advertising on campus. like when they used to have the big particle board signs about upcoming games. that was very cheap to do.

we have some big games coming up at home. no reason to have less than 8k on our saturday night games.

i remember when wsucatfan organized a meeting with athletics/marketing/fan board members/students and it wasnt very successful, he tried but not his fault. then weber layed off or removed the marketing director shortly after.

i say go resurect those old wooden signs and go buy some paint!

see its those people that make are student section lame. aside from what you think is a lame turnover chant no ever joins in anway on any chant we do ever there are only 15 students that will scream and yell and cheer. the reason is and you can walk around campus and ask this.... students think weber sucks and they dont care. as for promoting games we have really only had 3 or 4 home games during school to promote and i personally am in charge of that and working my tail off to try and get people to games. we dont have the budget we once had to get all the signage all over the place and even when we do get a table like we had in the union and flyers to pass out such as for the USU game when we had them out and talk about the game we get scuzzed and they could care less. if you have a better way of doing this i encourage you to get in touch with me and help us out. now to this weekends games. we will have 2 signs up in the union and passing out flyers all over campus starting tomorrow

Have these "students" get in touch with us on the front row before the game on Thursday. We're always looking for new ideas to get students involved. I personally love turnover, but if people don't like it, let's brainstorm and get some new stuff going on.

I can't tell if you're part of the problem "crowd" or part of the solution "crowd"

NOTHING wrong with turnover chant, if you don't think you can hear it on the floor you're an idiot. No I'm not a student.

I would love if the SAA could do a little pre-game get together in the student section before the Saturday game against Montana...maybe pair up with the Oaks, offer some free food, and go over some of the chants and see what kids think. It is hard to be original and creative, and I think the chants we have are great. We just need more kids to get involved. Who cares what your arm looks like during a chant? If the whole section is doing it, it is going to look powerful regardless. Case and point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVcHX2ItNYY

How "non-hetero" does that look? But it is HUGE at UNI, and all of the students do it. Swallow your homophobic tendencies and stop caring about what other people think about you. Go to the damn game, participate, and have fun.

I am not saying all the chants are bad. Only the turnover chant sucks. Simply ask any student who doesn't chant during that one, and they will say it sucks. Students need to be made aware that there are games, if they don't show, shame on them, if they do, great. I like the idea of joining with the oaks and doing something before the game. ;-) However, I have been to a basketball at every D1 arena in Utah where wsu has played, and I can tell you I don't miss games, I am not the problem. I haven't missed a home basketball or football game in over 20 years. ( started going when I was only months old, my parents are in the Wildcat Club). I haven't missed any instate games away either. I usually once a year make a road trip to one of the team road trip series on the road. So don't be calling me out, I just think that the chant needs to go. look around yourself when you do the chant, only the 15 around you are doing it, while the students sitting all around are looking at you like, "why are you doing that?"

In some defense to the turnover chant, its hard to get students doing that chant to like like of Sac. St. when we are up by a decent amount....

so maybe the turnover chant needs to go. but with that being said you could say that about almost any chant, anytime we cheer there are really 15 maybe 20 people that cheer with us and then it stops. the students need to join in and help make the cheers better. the turnover chant would rock if people would quit going to the game and just standing around. join in make the dee a living hell for anytime that steps foot in here

Well I just don't get why other students can't try it once? I bet the first time USU did "Winning Team/Losing Team", not everyone did it, and some said it was really stupid. If you absolutely hate it, then come up with something else. We'll try anything. We want students to be involved and chant and support this team. The Dee could be one of the most intimidating places to play if everyone banded together.

So please let these friends of yours know we're willing to change things up if they're willing to give ideas and participate in them. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Maddawg, no one dis-respects your efforts to get students to the games. Most are bandwagon fans at best, if the team is winning and making noise, they act like they have been life-long attendees for games.

It was like this when I went to college (when the dinosaurs were still roaming) and we could not get a crowd for hoops games. Football also was a challenge.

Since you have no budget and manning a table in the union takes a bunch of time, I suggest using what signs you can, but set a Facebook event and invite your friends, asking them to pass it along. Also, text all your phone contacts, tell them how important it is to have a presence for Saturday.

Good luck, know that any efforts you put forth that get fans in the arena helps the team and your school. Thanks

about watching the games. we cant do it as much because once again our budget. but i have offered anyone that wants to watch the games is more than welcome at my house we can fit enough people there to watch the games. tal was over for the PSU game and it was a blast

I think that the turnover chant should be used at important times throughout the game... doing it too much takes away the significance. since we are doing primary's "if you're happy and you know it" chant, how about, "you've had a turnover shout hurray!!!" (to the "you've had a birthday shout hurray" from the primary song) and then scream way loud and random... even something like that is funny, it catches on and people will all know the song and think its funny... the turnover chant is just is too long of a chant "turnoverrrrrrrrrr (with hand motions), turnoverrrrrrrrrr, turnoverrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..... YOU SUCK!" ... its mumbled, low pitched and looks extremely funny..... it almost takes too long to develop....

would it be/ could it be possible to have the away games viewed at the DEC? I think if you did that, you would generate a lot of student involvement.. while there watching in the seats, everyone could get informed about upcoming games, ideas, chants etc. I know that something like that is appealing to college kids.... ;-)
