Glen Dean.. Out

EWURanger,
For all it's worth, Glen did attend shoot around today. Hope this means he will stay around, if not we will have to hope for the best for our program. The three shoot arounds I have seen, all players were at the practice, all 13 players. Just have to wait and see what happen. Vic
Hey Vic,
Thanks for keeping us updated. You're the MAN :thumb:

Word on the street today is that Dean got his release yesterday. I hope we can still retain him. Dean's comments in the paper were very positive. I hope that Hayford and the AD are doing all they can to keep him. Regardless, we will be fine without him given Hayford's coaching ability. If we get the Kelley kid from GPrep and Ehlo kid, they will do just as well or better than Dean.

Uhh, I hope you're kidding about your comment about the Kelly kid or the Ehlo kid that they'd do just as well or better than Dean. First of all, they don't even play the same positions. And second, they're raw, freshmen wings that probably wouldn't get much time this year, anyway. (Frankly, I'm not even sure Ehlo will be more than a walkon-type player.) For anybody who's seen games over the past year or two, you'd know that Dean is the key player of that group. This is my fear of Division I-type recruiting vs. Division III.

UltimateEag:

Great comments, this is exactly why everyone needs to get off this '"wow" thing about hiring Elho. Mr. Hayford needs to hire someone with legitimate D-1 recruiting experience. He will do real well because he is a proven winner with Xs and Os, but recruiting is a whole new ballgame in D-1.

And everyone needs to quit concentrating on Spokane area. Seattle is loaded with talent these days and that is where the Eagles need to start. I love the loyalty to Spokane, but folks, get real, the talent lies in-state in Seattle and always will.

Thank you

I like seeing local kids playing. I went to some of Whitworth's games and they were good. I think there is a chance that one of the Whitworth guards may transfer too! It would be good to have three Spokane kids on the team. We will be able to compete fine. Good coaches make all the difference.

So here's why you shouldn't get too excited about a Whitworth guard transferring to Eastern: Their best player, Michael Taylor, was a D-III All American and could barely get off the bench at Montana for two seasons before transferring to Whitworth. There's a huge difference in speed and talent from Division I to Division III. I think it's fine to fill in the roster with local kids, but you've still got to find four or five truly talented kids to build around. Dean is definitely that type of talent.

Once again UltimateEag, you hit the nail on the head.

I truly appreciate loyalty and love the fact of supporting local, but when it comes to quality basketball there just are not the players in Spokane to create a winner.

To enhance you comments, just look at the scores when D-1 teams play D-3 teams, it almost always is a 40-plus margin.

If someone wants to continue having a sub par team, keep recruiting Eastern Washington (the local). If you want a winner, plant your behind down in the Puget Sound area and greater Portland metro and you will be playing for Big Sky championship.

Love the back and forth as it is so respectful and that is great.

wow, i really hope the rumors are not true and that Dean will come back next season to play on what should be a much improved team. i really think this coaching staff has what it takes to create some buzz with the bb program.

The Spokesman-Review is reporting that Glen Dean is staying. Sweet...

This is excellent news. A tribute to Earlywine's recruiting in the class of kid Dean is. In all interviews Dean has stressed the importance of friends, team mates, family and even his instructors. He even did the mature act of not mentioning who the other schools were. Classy. The cupboard is full. Let's see what Hayford does with it!

Great news indeed. A tribute to Earlywines recruiting? We barely made it into the BSC tourney..finally and then promptly got beat. And all that Dean professed was so important yet he went and talked to other schools? And who cares if he mentioned what schools he talked to...probably weren't DI schools and if they were who says they would want him having to sit out a year?

So will you eat a little crow when Eastern finishes in top three this upcoming season? They were young last year, not a single senior. If you know anything about basketball you can see the talent on this team. They battled injuries the first half of the season and finshed strong beating Montana and Weber for their worst home loss in 5 years. Dean was a frosh of the year and 2nd team all-league. A class kid on and off the court. Word is that the schools that were interested were from D-1 and better leagues. I am trying to find out which ones. The Eagles will be fine this year and continue to improve under the leadership of Hayford.

Wait a minute. I thought Dean was out. I guess I should spread some rumors myself and see what happens.

Go back to EGriz, Purple. Hayford was on the radio yesterday and said no player he had met with was leaving. So either Hayford's a liar, Dean hasn't met with the coach yet, or you're a pot-stirring troll.

Read this again Ninety-Three bird, sounds like you have trouble with comprehension

Yes, I did read the article.

WSU purple said "the word" was Dean, and maybe one or two others, wanted to transfer. I take "the word" to mean rumor, maybe others take it to mean fact. I heard the same rumor. You wrote that three outcomes were possible, one of those being WSU purple was a "pot-stirring troll". Another person voted for pot-stirring troll and yet another comes on to claim that no one is leaving.

But wait! The newspaper has an article that says Dean did want to leave EWU. He asked to be released from his scholarship agreement and the university declined that request. Now there will be a hearing in the next two weeks to determine whether he gets that release. My point is WSU purple's "word" was right. Dean asked for his release to transfer. He wanted to leave the program.

I hope he does not leave and find it encouraging that he is considering staying. Or at least that's what he's telling reporters. We will just have to wait to see if he stays and/or if anyone else decides to leave.

By the way, I was critical of the Spokesman-Review's coverage of the coaching change. So in fairness, I think Mr. Bergum has done a fine job this week of reporting the news surrounding this move. He reported the new coach before the day before he was announced and he uncovered the Dean story as well. Nicely done!

First, Observer, you were wrong. Wasn't Central and was a Division 1. And a major step up playing for a former NBA coach in a major conference with a great basketball following and tv deal. Not bad.

The kid was pressured to commit to staying. I heard they threatened to take his fifth year of scholarship if he even visited another school. He caved, regretted it and explored. Good for him. He was a model student-athlete and I wish him well. Hayford has plenty of guards and the new recruit guard. We will be just fine. Hayford is a great coach and will win no matter what. I think we get 20 wins in his first year.

:ohno:

Seems like kind of a dick thing to do after he said he was staying. But nonetheless, I wish him all the best.

Now we need to find another point guard. :?
