As horribly painful as it was (will be for a while), the program is solid with good players and coaches (talent and character). We're a national powerhouse and given the enormous amount of animosity toward us, nationwide, clearly demonstrates that.

Focusing on the good-VA played a great game Saturday. The 4th and 2 throw will be what sticks with him for the next nine months but considering the total body of work he did on Saturday, we never would have been in that position if he hadn't made some of the amazing plays he did. I remember thinking numerous times; "we have a really good QB." I feel horrible for him because I thought he actually played very well. Defense generally held the best running attacks in the country to relatively minimal performance throughout the playoffs. I don't think anyone expected 8-0 Big Sky record-impressive. Beating OSU-WOW! A ton of early verbal commitments-impressive. 10,000 regular season attendance average-I love it. Beating UM in Missoula-not easy-EVER. Total domination of MSU. Three extra tailgate events in December (my liver doesn't share my enthusiasm on that one). Earning a spot in the final four and being disappointed-my, how far we have come.

On a separate note: I was Christmas shopping on Sunday and was amazed at how many people I saw wearing EWU shirts, hats, coats, etc. I love the University as a whole but that is a product of our football team. I love this team and all it stands for. Roll on Eags, you're doing it right!

Well said! Saturday was tough for all of us who have a connection to the program, both as a fan and alumni. I will never forget the feeling in the locker room after letting it slip away against SHSU in 2004, and these guys won't forget this loss either. It will be a fuel rod during winter workouts and throughout the year, I promise you that. VA will be just fine. He'll learn and grow from this, and so will the rest of the squad. I'm proud as hell to be an Eagle!

Time to focus on the Gateway and doing whatever we can to get that thing off the ground. I can't wait until they open up fundraising to everyone, kind of like MSU did with their capital campaign.

Agreed. But doesn't it really suck to be one mouse click away from booking a plane ticket, hotel, etc. to dallas, then glance back at the tv and see some group of nobodies waltz uncontested down the field and end it all? Sure as he'll reminds me of the 2004 Sam Houston game but worse.

I know where you are coming from BLACKFALKIN. I am so distraught I can barely get out of bed in the morning. I think I am being too emotional, but this loss has really affected me. I hope I can attend games next year, only time will tell.

Hey man, I understand completely! Im still not over that game.. When I saw EWU beat Oregon State I knew it was going to be something special in 2013 for EWU. CAA fans give EWU a hard time about the OSU win but its harder than hell to beat ANY FBS TEAM. Especially on the road, and a BCS team at that! And a ranked BCS team at that! EWU marched right through the always tough Big Sky Conference, and I know first hand how hard that is.

EWU was down 21-0 and scored 31 unanswered. they got used to letting team hang around bc they have so much talent they can just turn it on a BAM! instant points! This was one of those times where they ALLOWED a team to hang around, and on the last EWU DRIVE VA normally turns it on.. But that last pass just got way from him.. I get it, hes human... But a "clutch QB" is defined at that moment. A "clutch qb" delivers in that situation.

A lot of things went wrong in that game and it doesn't ALL fall on VA, but he needs to be held accountable for that throw. That loss was HUGE bc it puts EWU back in the NC game, a game I thought they had a good chance of winning. Losing in the same game, back to back, at home, is not a good thing mentally. Now you have to win 12 more games to get another crack at it.. :ohno: I cant imagine VA having as good of a season again. WE WILL SEE.

BLACKFALKIN,
I hope your reply to me was sarcasm. Because I was being sarcastic. HOLY CRAP!! it was a football game, and our team lost. Life goes on. You said some dumb stuff and so did WineGuy. Just quit descending down the stupidity pipeline.

There was only 1:40 left on the clock at that time and we had a 3 point lead. Why is no one complaining the about the lack of defense? They couldn't even hold them to a FG to play into overtime.

Probably because our defense had been stretched so thin with key injuries to safeties and LBs. We still should've done better than we did, but it's understandable.

You're blind then. You don't think VA's going to continue to get better? As a sophomore, he had a better season than any quarterback in EWU history, and one of the 3 best in FCS history. Look at next year's schedule; it's pretty damn soft.

2014

AUG 30 - Western Montana - DII at home, easy win.
SEP 06 - @ WASHINGTON - UW with new coach, no Keith Price, no ASJ, likely no Bishop Sankey. Very feasible win.
SEP 13 - vs. SHSU - No Bell, no Flanders, still joke of a defense. Win.
SEP 20 - @ MSU (non-conference) - No McGhee, and MSU is our bitch... win.
SEP 27 - @ UC Davis - Easy win.
OCT 04 - vs. ISU - Easy win.
OCT 11 - @ SUU - Tough game, but again, should be a win.
OCT 18 - vs. UNC - Easy win.
OCT 25 - @ NAU - No Bauman... win.
NOV 01 - vs. UND - New HC on an average to subpar team.. in Cheney... win.
NOV 08 - vs. Montana - Griz will be tough per usual, but on the red and another year for our WRs and VA... win.
NOV 15 - BYE
NOV 22 - @ PSU - Another dogfight, but should be a win.

It's more than feasible to win 12 before the playoffs. I don't see a guaranteed loss on that schedule. At worst we go 9-3, and back in the playoffs. Wipe your tears, tell yourself you're a man, and have some faith in your alma mater. :coffee:

That is a pretty favorable schedule, for a change. I love the fact that we get SHSU at home next year - I think we will beat them like a drum.

What hasn't been mentioned so far in this thread is how deep and talented our offense has the potential to be. We will be very deep at WR, TE, and RB. The interior of the O-Line is going to be a bit of a concern, but we have depth there as well.

I keep thinking about the possibility of having Forte, Mario Brown, Jabari Wilson, et. al. You throw in Moore and possibly DJ Adams in the mix? Oh boy... :D

RB will certainly be interesting to watch next year with (hopefully) DJ added to the mix. Talk about a platoon of different punches to throw at defenses. We could conceivably become a run-heavy team with the personnel we have. Pound, slash, play action bomb, TD. Repeat.

I love this schedule and the way opposing personnel is shaping up. If we continue on our current trajectory, we are in prime position for a BSC championship threepete. Dont think we have ever done that.

Can't believe there's people bitching about a season that included:

An 8-0 Big Sky finish (Never been done in school history)
Defeating a Pac-12 program (Never been done in school history)
Back to back semi-final appearances (Never been done in school history)
Back to back wins over Montana, and winning 3 of the past 4 over them (It's been a long while)

Thought that is interesting as well, but in some ways, I guess you know you've got a heck of a program when people are pissed you don't make it to the NC. My first year at EWU was 97, when the team made it to the Semis. I got to see the team perform with Erik Meyer and the great teams he led. Even with that, I never envisioned the kind of success Eastern is experiencing. And it doesn't feel like it's going away. It seems there is momentum that will keep EWU as one of the top teams in the country for many years to come.

And regarding the gripe about VA, that is so juvenile. I get the frustration on what should have been an easy play, but I guarantee he is feeling a lot more pain from that than we can imagine. It cost us the NC. It was likely a TD that would have kept Kupp's streak going. It would have likely been a TD and tied the record for most TD's in a season...with another game to own that record outright. Show me an elite QB out there that never misses a play like that! In this case, it was amplified by the situation, but all of us have seen elite QB's at all levels miss passes like that. Sometimes, they are at the beginning or the middle of the game, or even at the end. Give the guy a break! He is one of the best to ever play at EWU, and is a piece of an outstanding team.

VA is back next year. Personally, I find that really exciting. Kupp is back next year. Hill is back next year. I predict Forte will have a breakout year next year. Tonani should be back next year. BALDWIN should be back next year. There are over 100 FCS teams that are playoff eligible when the season begins. In most of the seasons in the past decade, EWU has been at the top of the pile. They have been, and will continue to be a legitimate contender. And not many teams out there can really say that.

Go EAGS!

Reminds me of this oldie but goddie:

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

Agreed on the 9-3 or better. Potential threats:

MSU: They lose a ton but at this point under Ash's tenure, they too shouldn't really have to rebuild and Bozeman is a tough place to play

SHSU: I was never a huge fan of Bell, it's the scheme that bothers me. Flanders was terrific but I think it's the kind of offense that you can plug fast athletes into with some continued success. Remember how we were rebuilding having to replace Nichols and Boyce or the big three last year?

UCD: Lose their QB and I don't know who else but return stud running back Gabe Manzaneras. They finished the season strong and it will be interesting to see if they continue to progress under Gould.

SUU: If they can find an offense, look out, because with Cowser, Holly, and Browning back, they are VERY good on d again.

UW: 22 schollies, something to prove to a new coach, and Husky Stadium...which is very much like a porcupine except the 70,000 pricks are on the inside.

Griz: JJ, Ellis Henderson, and a really good corner who's name I'm forgetting.

PSU: Sloppy but talented and always play us tough.

Our secondary will be stronger with Raines back playing full time from injury and Tonani back after a good recovery. Both are strong tacklers with good height and speed. :thumb:

LBCoach,
I agree with you, add to that list Jake Hoffman, from NC High, Isaac Anderson, (little Pit Bull)from Prosser High. We are going to be at DBs, also LBs, keep your eyes open for Jake Gall, from Cle Elum, Roslyn, High, and John Kreifels, (another Pit Bull) from Thomas Downey High, Modesto, CA. Watched both Athletes this season in practices, they both impressed me. Can't wait for the Recruits coming for visits in Jan, and Feb. NLI. Let us get ready and Reload again. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

dudeitsaid,
Add to the list of WRs, Aaron Clark 6'4" Sumner High, Nic Sblendorio, 6'0" Skyline High, run great routes, Marcel Morris, Federal Way High, Blair Bomber, Kendrick Bourne, all have had plays with the team, with our regular Receivers, we are going to be very deep. Cooper Kupp, Shaq Hill, Cory Mitchell. Some of the recruits coming that could make the starting line up. Now everything depends if all comes back. We normally lose a few this time of year, just have to wait and see. Happy New Year to "All." Vic Wallace

We have some holes to fill at corner, OL, and DT. Katoa and Pulu really played well the last half of the season and in the playoffs. We need to put on some weight at that position.

I haven't seen McDonald on the sidelines throughout the playoffs. Anyone know what is up with him? I would think that he would be there supporting his teammates.
