The Bears are playing in the inagural Great West Conference Championship against top-seeded Utah Valley.. Sawicki pitching extremely well, and the Bears have a 3-0 lead in the 5th.. Berggren, who is on the 41-game streak.. is 0-3. Lets go Bears!
 
Bears fail to capitalize with bases loaded and 1 out as Raudenbush strikes out swinging and Shannon (who already has an RBI triple) hit a grounder to third base. Let's see how Sawicki does in these middle-late innings, after 4 IP he has allowed 2 hits with 3 strikeouts.
 
UVU tallied a run, but a GREAT throw from the centerfielder Borzilieri stopped another run from coming home.. And Sawicki forced Jason Zundel into a groundout to shortstop where Crudo made a great throw to first with the bases loaded and 2 outs.. 3-1 Bears after 5.
 
Stretch time in Edinburg, Texas.. Bears miss another opportunity, had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out but two pop-ups leave those runners in place.. Still 3-1, Berggren walked in the inning, so he is still hitless but looks like he will have one more AB by the time this one is over.. Sawicki is still out there for the bottom of the 7th.. Go Bears!
 
Bears caught a big break in the bottom of the 7th.. Runners on 1st and 2nd with 0 outs for the Wolverines when Amicone laid down a bunt.. but Sawicki took a chance and threw the runner out at 3rd.. it is hard to know what happened without any sound and poor camera work but the runner at 2nd base was out as well (interference?). Sawicki then forced the next batter into a grounder right back at him.. 3-1 Bears after 7.. just 6 more outs.. Go Bears!
 
Utah Valley posts 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th, and we are all tied up at 3.. No runs come across for the Bears in the top of the 9th, so now UVU has a chance to win the conference in the bottom of the 9th.. Sawicki still out there for the Bears.. looks like Smallcomb is going to keep riding him.. pitch count is a big factor.. 107 pitches coming into the inning.. Go Bears!
 
The Bears SURVIVE the bottom of the 9th inning.. UVU singles to start the inning.. the runner gets moved to second on a bunt.. With 1 out and a man in scoring position, UVU hits a single to right field,, but the pinch runner stumbles a bit and stays at third. With men on the corners the Wolverines try for a squeeze play, but 1B Mark Shannon makes a nice throw to Hardman at the the plate to barely get the out on a 50/50 call. Smallcomb then takes out Sawicki with 2 outs and brings in the Lefty Brendan Hall who forces a grounder, where the Bears get the force out at second base.. Extra Innings.. here we go!
 
Utah Valley wins on a single by Ardenese 4-3.. Bears had their chances.. tough ending.. Berggren fails to get a hit, but things are certainly looking bright for this team in the future.. And I guess that is the official end of the 2009-2010 athletic season for UNC, which should be remembered for some time. Go Bears!!
