Um...our basketball team will be better than Montana's next year. Or, UNC at least won't be relying on a guard that can't make a jump shot to save his life and a 7-footer who refuses to play in the post like the Griz will.
Well, Will Cherry
did average 14.2 ppg even though he "can't make a jump shot to save his life," but anyway… And who does NoCo have, exactly? No disrespect to Mike Proctor, but if he's your best player you're probably in trouble. Losing Beitzel, Kaba, Montgomery, and Kingman… that's like if Montana—on top of Qvale—also lost Selvig, Jamar, and Steward. The Bears' leading returning scorer averaged just 7.4 ppg.
Big Sky basketball is always unpredictable, but NoCo finishing ahead of Montana next year would be quite a shock without major injuries. I would pick them sixth (between NAU & MSU), but impact Jucos could shift things around a bit. The Bears lose more than anyone else except maybe Northern Arizona. Here's how I would rank things for '11-12 at the moment:
- 1. Weber
2. Montana
3. EWU
4. Portland St.
5. NAU
6. Northern Colorado
7. Montana St.
8. Idaho St.
9. Sac State
Weber & UM should at least be pretty good, EWU could be as well if the new coach doesn't suck, PSU/NAU/NoCo should be average at best, and the rest should be mediocre at best. Joe O'Brien will get fired at ISU and the Hornets will really regret giving Brian Katz that long extension last year.
