Hornets vs. WOU

With all the BSC news lately, it's time to focus back on the season at hand. WOU has some size in the trenches and some tall receivers and I expect them to put up a fight. The Hornets need not overlook this team as they amassed 469 offensive yards in their first game and allowed 266 yards by their opponent. (They played a Canadian team so I have no idea how to gage the stats.) They also committed 11 penalties in their opener and threw 2 INT’s. Their kicker drilled a 50 yard FG and their punter had some amazing numbers as well so their kicking game looks to be solid.

The Hornets need to focus on this game and come out and dominate this lower division opponent. The Hornets will need to use this game to work out any kinks they might have on either side of the ball and get everything in tune for BSC play. This game should be in hand by halftime. It will be interesting to see if Sperbeck keeps the guys with injuries on the bench for another game. I think this would be a good game to get everyone up to game speed but we will see what he decides. My final score prediction is 38-13.

FYI, Simon Fraser is now a full NCAA Div. II university in its athletics, so they play American football rules and not Canadian now. So WOU gave them a good whoopin. I still think it won't be close though.

The only real concern I have is our secondary. I'm not afraid we’ll be a laughing stock this weekend by loosing to a DII team, but I do fear giving up big pass yards and points. I agree with GCM in that we need to win big. I think our offense will be up to the task, but we can't overlook this game and put up some big numbers.

I hope we get a decent crowd. I unfortunately can’t make it Saturday. Game should look good on that new turf.

Here are some stats I found doing a few searches.

Last season UCFE beat them 29-13, and lost to EWU 35-14, overall the Wolves were 5-5 on the season. Below are the stats from the game:

I'm actually moderately concerned about this game. Mainly because of our passing defense...

Hoping though...

SAC 31

WOU 14

Im not. WOU played Simon Fraser in their first game back playing American football rules in 8 years. This game is not going to even be close.

Is MBT going to play? Or are we looking at our first Fleming start...?

I won't be surprised to see Fleming start, which means we will be very predictable. Just think if we hadnt picked up Fleming, it would be Carmazzi starting.

I was at the Stanford game and based on the performance of the defense I believe WOU is going to be able to score. I expect Sac to run the ball extremely well with both Hilliard and Shaw breaking off long TD runs.

Sac 41
WOU 27

We should be ok with WOU but we are not in position to take anything for granted. The defense backfield was clearly overmatched and lacked the speed to stay with Stanford's receivers. I expect them to be more competitive this week. Our pass rush was pretty effective at Stanford and should have no problem vs WOU.
This will be a good game to work in Reed and Hendershott both who sat out last week before the BSC starts. I haven't heard anything about MBT, he was on the sideline in uniform cheering on the troops in the second half so it couldn’t have been too bad. When he was sacked late in the 2nd I noticed a slight limp on the side that he wears the knee brace when he walked to the sideline to get the next play but when he ran back to the huddle he looked ok. I was glad to hear it was the ankle instead of the knee. When Fleming came out for the second half I thought it was more to take advantage of his better mobility and quickness.
MBT played well but was having problems avoiding the rush. Fleming moves a lot better and turned a almost sure sack into a 17 yard gain. To their credit both of our QBs showed a lot of confidence, poise and control under a lot of pressure, we are lucky to have both of them! I am looking forward to WOU Saturday and to having a great season!

Are people on this board actually comparing Stanfords WR's to WOU's?!?!

The Hornet secondary is going to do a fine job against WOU's receiving corps. They're smaller and slower than BCS Stanford's. Any comparison of WOU's WR's to Stanford's is honestly laughable and downright offensive (to Stanford).

Hilliard and Shaw are going to literally obliterate their defensive line.

Christian Clark is going to get AT LEAST 2 sac's.

And the Hornet WR's are going to have a field day catching passes from either flemming or MBT.

Yes, I am a homer.

Stung,

Haven’t you heard? All of the WOU receivers are Pac 10 drop downs . Andrew Luck just flunked out of Stanford and will be starting for WOU Saturday. Wake up and smell the coffee!

Oh yeah, I think I read that somewhere. That's right... I read it in "Pessimist Weekly"

What the cr@p is wrong with Baby Brother?!?

Um, he has never taken a snap during a game. He has been in the system three years now and if he was the heir apparent he would be starting or backup.

Um, he has never taken a snap during a game.

By that argument, NOBODY would ever become starting QB.

He was terrible in the scrimmages.

This argument is MUCH more to the point. He could have just had a bad spring (as one has a bad test in class). But this is probably much closer to the truth than merely "he's never done it before."
