How to beat Oregon....

Anyone that's being real with themselves knows that beating the Ducks is going to be a MONUMENTAL task. Their size, speed and talent are special. However, if we want to give ourselves a shot to win there are certain things we need to do on offense. I watched/studied Oregon a lot last year knowing that we had them coming up in 2015 and got to watch them play live down in Pullman last year and a couple of things really stood out. 1) Their team speed on defense is ridiculous. 2) You can't play east and west football against them. Any lateral plays WSU tried failed miserably. WSU did however have success when they went DIRECTLY AT Oregon - Finding holes OVER THE MIDDLE and driving the ball downfield instead of out to the flat. UO's defensive players had no trouble what-so-ever chasing down WSU's RB's/WR's with bubble screens, swing passes, etc. They did however have a much tougher time stopping plays where Halliday was able to gun the ball over the middle. There weren't many yards after the catch (YAC) but WSU was able to move the ball much better when they went to these types of plays. WSU was able to stay in the game for this reason and almost pulled off the upset. I hope West doesn't try to throw out to the flat because those plays just won't work against Oregon. Our best bet is to let West's BIG arm pick up chunk yardage. We have the receivers to do this! I believe this philosophy gives us a shot to compete with :nod:regon.

How to beat Oregon...

Be +5 in TO margin...line 'em up 5-wide and just go at 'em, because you know we're not going to run the ball much against that D.

I agree, throw the ball down the field. Jordan West can make the big throws and drive the ball down field. I don't understand why some posters still question his abilities. Terrence Grady is a big target and caught everything at the scrimmage last week and compliments Kupp, Bourne and Hill. They can't shut down all of our receivers. Force their DBs to cover deep routes, test the linebackers by dragging our tight ends across the middle. They are not super humans.

I think the bottom line on defense will be the EAGS ability to get to VA. Gotta find ways to force him to throw off balance, but contain him from rolling out. Montana did a decent job of that last year. Many times he was throwing off balance and our receivers were making outstanding catches of rather poorly thrown passes. I would sure like to see the defense get ultra aggressive to get to him and knock him around.

I do secretly hope to see one monumental game ejecting type of hit on VA by our defensive line.

Shit, the way our DL played last season, I might just settle for a single hit that knocks him down. I worry Oregon might hang 80 on our D if they haven't improved.

Make no mistake, there will be a lot of casual observers to this game. It will be covered nationally because of the VA tie in. It is absolutely imperative on a PR level to play Oregon tough and at least stay in the game. Eastern has a lot of momentum right now, but a lot will be dashed if we show up like a real second level team in this one.

Thanks Debbie. Step away from the keyboard...

PR? F'ing kidding right? No one gives EWU a chance in this one, a loss, even a "bad" loss would not impact the program. Line on one betting site is Oregon gives 35 points... Over/under 110 points. We score 35 and it is a WIN no matter the final game score.

Really? We lose 80-35 and the only headline is "Vernon Adams Accounts for 1000 Yards Against Old Team." That would be terrible PR and tremendously damaging to the psyche of the team. There will be a lot of eyes on this game, and getting embarrassed would be tough to bounce from.

Really. First of all, PR is different than psyche. Who sits around and thinks about someone putting 80 points on our team? You are still living for yesterday about the defense and I for one, would like to see you reserve all those negative emotions until at least after the Montana State game. We have seen eye to eye on the defense in the past, but it is a new day. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Going to leave the "psyche" of the team in the hands of Coach B and staff. If you are at the game, get out of your own way and cheer the team on best you can. Wish I could be there with you to enjoy and cheer on the players in a difficult situation.

I agree with LDopa. If we don't at least make this game competitive during the first half and our defense gets 60-70 points hung on them, it will be a horrible PR situation for the program *AND* a stunning blow to the psyche of the team. Ever since VA announced his decision to transfer this game has been a lose/lose/lose. This game has the potential to get really ugly, and not just from a score perspective.

I don't have a problem with those type hits as long as they're clean, but I would never want to see a former player of ours taken out of a game due to injury.

I don't think you understand where I'm coming from... I'm not saying our defense will get gashed and look awful. I'm saying this game has as much national interest as any Eastern has ever played, and coming out and getting embarrassed would be worse in this game than in pretty much any other.

The last thing we'd want is for Oregon to jump all over our defense and lose big. It would validate VA's decision to leave and, whether you want to believe it or not, make our kids feel like they can't play with the bigs. The overall damage of an ugly loss here would trump any bad loss in recent memory. I'm not predicting that or saying it will happen, only pointing out that this would be a horrific game to come out flat and get rolled.

This is especially tough knowing Oregon has a history of making teams look bad by running up the score and playing an offensive style that we've never been able to figure out.

Think the coaches and players who decided to commit and stay at Eastern deserve a little more respect than "our" concern conveys. Four years in a row EWU has hung with the big boys and even with three losses, still had a part of the conference title. No one doubts Oregon is an elite program, losing a senior QB sucks, playing him is worse; but if I was involved with the team the focus would be control what you can, improve daily, team goals remain winning a conference title and competing for the Natty. What happens at Oregon won't change those things. Shakespeare said it best, "But we in it shall be remembered- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day sheds his blood with me". The team will endure it and come out stronger for the travail. Natty Jan 2016. Trust the players and coaches to keep it in perspective as well as possible. No one else's opinion outside the program will matter at the end of the season. Season over soundbite.

I'm not wishing injury!

That came off poor taste, my bad.

Someone above said "West can make all of the throws" which is true. The key will be keeping him protected though which is easier said than done, even with our experienced O-line. Two things must happen in this game for us to have even a tiny chance: 1)We must find ways to create turnovers. If we don't go +2 or +3 in turnover margin, it's going to be tough to stay in the game. 2)We can't get off to a start like we did last year against UW. I believe we dug ourselves into a 0 - 21 hole right off the bat last year. We need to come out and settle down right away and not shoot ourselves in the foot by trying to do too much. Just play within ourselves and keep the nerves calm. If we can make it through the 1st quarter without turning it over or doing something stupid....I think we can build some confidence and hang around for a while. It's going to be tough no matter how you look at it.

go eags!

Yep, TO's have the difference in every recent matchup against Pac 12 teams. Maybe if we hadn't spotted UW 21 points in the 1st quarter last year we could have beaten them. UW game in 2011 was also very similar in that we spotted them early points off of TO's.

The only real exception was in 2013, where we didn't turn the ball over once.
