Illinois State

EWURanger,
I was figuring what type of team was Illinois State. I forgot we played them in 2012, according to Dave Cook, Sports Information. We defeated them 51-35 in the playoff. That was news to me, I did attend all playoffs since we have been in the playoffs, and the name didn't cross my mind. That is what happen when you starts to age ;) ;) ;) ;) ;). I am so impressed with our team on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams.    :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:. I will leave the naming to Jim (SR) of naming Players, but must mention Ronnie Hamlin and Todd Raynes. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Hope to see many of you tomorrow at Coaches Show, if you can make it from work, etc. Vic Wallace

That's all Dopa? Why do we need to "step it up"? What elements? Play calling? Execution? Situational awareness? Not saying there isn't room for improvement, but your initial post is devoid of insight.

Gonna watch the Ill St game again to solidify my impressions. Off the top of my head, they are physical, offense mirrors our own with fewer play makers, not overly fast. Watched a lot of football yesterday, so some of this is a jumble. Believe if the Eag's play at the same level as this week, they beat the Redbirds in a close game. Will flesh this out in the prediction thread.

Are you not capable of own analysis?

How about this: the team who blocks and tackles better will probably win.

That's rich. I guess now that you don't have anything to bitch about with the defense, you got nothing? What a dick.

You pretty much just bounce around this site trying to make friends, huh? Are you sure this is the site for you? Perhaps you might try egriz?

Pretty sure you probably chased "friends" on Facebook, than upvotes on Discus and now views on the Red Zone and other football fan sites. Your participation trophy is in the mail Dopa. Not everyone can be lovable like me. :)

I'm not sure our D could play much better than they did yesterday, but we'll need a lot more offensive production than the 183 yards VA threw for yesterday to beat them. The thing is, we played a team yesterday that had a very solid defense and knows our team pretty well. I doubt Illinois State's defensive line and LB's are as good as Montana's. We'll score more on them than we did on Montana in either game.

We'll need a similar defensive effort as we had yesterday. ISU-R scores a ton of points.

Ranger, I think your Montana comment is the key. After watching Montana's front seven again yesterday I realized they were the only team this year that affected VA's behavior in the pocket. UM was able to for the most part contain him from scrambling to the edges, while compressing the pocket. Our offensive line is very good and I bet if you asked them what their most challenging matchup was all year it would be UM.

I think ESPN3 has game archives so hope to watch the UNI/Ill St. game to see how their D compares to UM.

Couldn't see the first game against Montana (ROOT game), but totally impressed with their D line and LB's. Knew Wags was a force, but totally impressed how they played together. Liked how they stopped pushing up field to contain VA and not give him a lane when he took a step and looked like a scramble was about to happen. Don't think I have seen a better front seven all season and that includes NDSU. Would love to see how you rate the Redbirds D. If the Griz are a 9 out of 10, the Redbirds are a 6-7 IMO.

This game will be a shootout, much like it was in 2012. Like others have said, I like our chances to get back to Frisco if we get by ISU.

A couple of prelims...

Coprich has 1900 yards and Robeson has 850 rushing in a conference known for defense.

The Redbords have had 2 field goals and 3 punts blocked. They've also given up a punt return and a kickoff for touchdowns.

They are tied for 58th in TO Margin, we are 13th.

Thinking back to 2012, they had tremendous size and after looking at this year's roster they appear to be the same. I'm guessing it's a very powerful group up front and Zylstra will need to have another good game.

Really?! I'm not saying this is a dickhead post or anything, but....

It was just a general observation. We can't make those anymore?? You can be nicer, Lucky....

I agree, Dopa. As well as we played yesterday, we'll need to be that much better next week. And then we'll need to be that much better in the Semi's than we're going to be next week. It only gets tougher.

Sorry for not providing additional insight...

Pet peeve showing up here. Don't remember the last time it showed up in this forum. However, people are saying "I like our chances". It is a non committal answer which implies to me that you subconsciously foresee bad results in this game.

Eastern Beats the Redbirds. We win shootouts. We are more talented offensively and defensively than Illinois State. Done.

Asking for more from one of the more vocal poster's is a dickhead post? Thought I mentioned there was room for improvement. Know the lack of sun is affecting people's moods.... Vitamin D. Look, your guys opinion of a post of mine doesn't really matter in the balance but do you really want to play Dopa is a victim game? :ohno: Thanks for the feedback Dozy.

Agree RJ. Understand that many haven't seen the Redbirds play and they are a solid team. Honestly, their schedule was far easier than the Eags and most of their opponents were one trick ponies. Roberson is the real deal and will make some plays and the rest of the team believes in his abilities. The running game was effective for them, but their back isn't West from Towson. Anyway, lack of knowledge translates to uncertainty. The game is on replay ESPN3. I watched it and our second quarter. Like our chances. :D

Hello Eagle fans,

Congrats on your season. In reading this thread so far, it seems like we have followed you closer than you have followed us. I'm a Redbird fan granted, but we are legit. Our QB lit up UNI, but our horse is RB Coprich. Defensively, we have a lot of players, and take a lot pride in this. We know EWU can throw it and that Big Sky conference likes to throw it. Hard to tell how much is because of strong pass attacks or weak pass defense, or maybe not enough run/pass balance. We love to run and pass on offense. We also get it after hard on defense. but everyone would say that in elite 8 of playoff. What might surprise you is MVFC is 8-1 against Bg Sky this year, and most have been 20+ point margins. Our worst team South Dakota (0-8 in conference) beat Northern Arizona and lost to Montana by 8 pts, our only loss to Big Sky. South Dakota State beat Cal Poly very easily .. 44-18. We beat South Dakota State 45-10 in one of our best games of year. UNI yesterday was very similar .. fired on on cylinders and it wasn't as close at 41-21 score suggested. UNI ha one of the top defenses in country, but had no answer for us yesterday, after beating us a a month ago at their place. SDSU is strong team and gave NDSU all they could handle yesterday before losing by 3 at NDSU. NDSU is not as dominant, but still very strong.

Anyway, we know EWU is very good and your QB was out 4 games. And that 2 years ago, we had a nice game going and let it slip away on your field. We turned over 90% of that team and are back. This team is more explosive and well rounded. We were picked to finish 6th in our conference preseason because we went 5-6 last year after getting hit hard by graduation the prior 2 years. We weren't ready to reload until this year. Let me assure you MVFC is not over-rate .. we were 23-1 against FCS out of conference. And competed very well in about 11 games against FBS going 3-8 with only a couple blowouts. We had the toughest non-conference and conference strength of schedule in all of FCS. Look at Sagarin, Massey, GPI .. MVFC is toughest conference in FCS according to those sources.

That said, we are looking forward to the players settling this on the field.

Most importantly: 1. your red turf is an eyesore 2. didn't you guys have a poster who took the other teams roster pics and dubbed them various not-so-flattering characters .. that was hilarious. Please entertain us again. big props to whoever did that.

I agree with you that top to bottom the MVFC is the best conference in FCS this year, but fortunately for us it is EWU vs ISU and not our conference vs your conference.

Outside of UW, I think ISU will be the best team we've played this year. I have confidence in our team and know that winning and losing will depend on how we play and not the opponent. If we play a good game and don't lose the turnover battle we win 48-41.

Great post. You coming to Cheney? If so, come to our tailgate we've got a cold beer or two for you. We are easy to find. Looking forward to the rematch. One memory from 2012 is you have nice uniforms. Pleased we have you in Cheney again, would not want to face you on the road. Hopefully we will have a little added incentive after New Hampshire loses Friday night. We love our home games on the Red.
