ISU vs UNC

BEAR 2003

Active member
Well I would like to hear what you all think our chances are this week?

Bye the way Sac. St put a hurting on NAU this past weekend!!!

I am still on record for predicting that the Bears will upset MSU 17-13 and will finish the season 1-10 for the second year in a row bring Downings record at UNC to an AMAZING 2-20!!!!!!!!!!!!! (atleast it will be a home win)

ISU played MSU better than the score indicated last week. ISU looks to have some issues on offense. So here is what I would like to see out of the Bears. Hold ISU to 375 yards of offense. UNC gains 425 yards of offense. These would both be big improvements for the Bears. Keep the turnovers equal and that would say UNC 20 - ISU 17. That is what I would like to see go down.

Unfortunately I am a realist and we struggle with ISU. Again, I think we can keep it close though so I'll say ISU 28 - UNC 20.

Ahhhh a home win. I remember them so well. How quickly they have become a thing of ancient lore. How do we go from having a wining percentage of .848 (56 - 10) to .000 (0 - 7)? We may lose more home games in 2006 and 2007 then we did from 1995 - 2005.

I didn't know this game was on Altitude 'till midway through the 2nd. Our defense is looking pretty good. The offense needs to find a way to move tha dang ball.

Dear Board,

I was wrong, someone needs to be fired off this football staff. I think the most likely candidate in the defensive coordinator. I've never seen a team that is so poor at tackling. It amazes me week in and week out that this team continues to miss tackles at an alarming rate. That is all the players and poor coaching. This should not be happening in the sixth week of the season. The defensive coordinator needs to go. With a poor defense we will never win a game this year. Our offense is also bad but they just brought in a new OC last season so fire the DC and do it quickly.

I watched about 75% of the game, my review can pretty much be summed up in one word, blah...

Not too impressed, yeah the score was semi-close, so is that a moral victory? To just be totally outclassed in every facet but not be humiliated for the first time this season, is that a good sign?

I don't know, yes I realize I'm Mr. Negative, but at no point during the entire game did it seem like UNC was every a real threat to win. ISU kept UNC at arms length and never were threatened. We really have zero playmakers on either side of the ball which just makes the ability to change a games momentum virtually impossible. Yes, there were a couple touchdowns in garbage time so I guess that's a positive, Woods and Chesla are our two best players. Both quarterbacks are terrible, the defense is a group of undersized slow guys that seem to play hard but not one of them can seem to be able to make a game changing play...

It was overall very depressing and could that Holt Arena be any worse? I felt like I was watching a game in someone's basement.

Also, what's up with getting called for a penalty on every kick off return? And not only that all the penalties in general. UNC is leading the Big Sky in penalties and I can see why after yesterday. That is all on coaching so I'm looking at you Downing...

I won't be coming up to Greeley for any games this year, first time in a while for that. I will always support the program and the school but I take these loses too hard. I'd just be depressed for a week if I actually had to witness this stuff in person. So for my own mental well being I'm staying in Denver this season.

I go to the games for the drinking and friends. It sucks that the Bears are so bad, but the drinking helps with that....

PTW, I think you are misunderstanding the "leading the Big Sky in penalties". Per the league stats, UNC is the least penalized team in yardage--by nearly 10 yards a game better than Sac State. UNC is currently 6th in number of penalties called against it, 43, with two other teams near with 39 (ISU & UM) in only 5 games.

FYI, here's the quick link to the BSC stats: http://www.bigskyconf.com/stats.asp?page=stats/Football/2007/confldrs.htm

actually, i thought the defense played okay against ISU. some of the offensive playcalling was bad, but this woods is turning out to be a nice player. they need to build the offense around him and PICK A QUARTERBACK. play schrenk or orms. Vlahogeorge has proved he cant get it done at this level, and Breazele...............were kind of beating a dead horse there. concentrate on the run and you might have a chance to win a game.

Oh my, Oh My. First game I didn't have to turn off, but we were never in it. Phineas did a pretty good run down of the game a few more thoughts:
1. I think the offensive staff was absolutely terrible on Saturday. Obviously the gameplan was set up in such a way that the coaching staff thought they could run underneath crossing patterns and gets some yards after the catch. Fine if that is the gameplan, but it did not work at all. There must have been 10 third downs where the route was run 5 yards or more less than what was needed. ADJUST THE GAMEPLAN. ISU was ready for it. That was some of the most frustrating playcalling I have ever witnessed.
2. The QB situation is a disaster. No reason to pull the redshirt off of Orms, but what about Schrenk (sp?). If the coaches think that Vlahogeorge has a future than let him play, if not go to the third team. Hell even just stick with DB, I don't really care. Just make a decision quit the merry go round behind center!!
3. Thank goodness the score was close, at least that looks better to the rest of the football world. Anyone who actually watched it though knows the game was not nearly that close and UNC was never in it. That is the disappointing part of the whole situation. Outside of Woods, there are zero playmakers on this team. I don't care if they are young, we should still be seeing some flashes of what is possible. This might be the most concerning thing to me. Last year when EWU was young, it was evident that they had talent and the experience would pay off down the road. I don't see that talent on this team. Just because you played your first 3 years does not mean you will all of a sudded become an all american if you couldn't make plays as fr, so, jr.
4. I guess you would say that this is the best the D has played? I have almost given up on this side of the ball. Probably the worst defensive team in the history of the program. 478 yards of offense again this week - I guess at least it isn't 500. I will say that they did a good job buckling down in the red zone to force a couple of field goals this week so that is a plus. How about forcing some turnovers or a few punts though?
5. What in the world happened to Andy Birkel?

As down as I am though, I will still be up in Greeley again on Saturday. I am a glutten for punishment :?

Why does this "least penalties" thing keep coming up? The penalties on Saturday were the devastating type (those that kill drives and field position). I realize there are few positives to look towards but lets focus on something worthwhile like getting the OC to focus on giving the rock to Woods and Chesla - they showed me something.

Knee surgery. Sometimes players get back what they had, sometimes they don't.
Damn, I was expecting some big things out of him. We could use a playmaker on the edge. Doesn't Vincent Jackson have a brother???

Plus our QBs suck, he can’t catch the ball if the QB can’t throw it to him.

Just watching the replay on Altitude, here are my thoughts.

Offense - Sucks
Both QBs are terrible. Woods is our best player. Chesla maybe. Luckily, other than VG running into his own blocker, mistakes were at a minimum. The coaches need to look at the "Down and To Go" part of the scoreboard. A 3 yard pass on 3rd and 8 is not going to get it done. The running game looks ok, because of Woods. The passing game can’t complete anything over 5 yards.

Defense - Better than our offense
The D actually looked ok to me. They held ISU to 13 through 3 quarters. They also did well in the red zone, particularly when VG coughed it up on the 7. They are definitely young, but I think experience will show this group grow. I think they were also hampered by play calling. A lot of sets that did not match the down or offensive formation. They only started to give up scores in the 4th, and at that point, they had been on the field for 27 of the 45 minutes of the game. If the offense had put together a sustained drive or two before the 4th, I think the D would have not given up as many in the 4th.

Special Teams - Bah
Good kick returns, ok coverage. Too many penalties.

Other
Having seen Holt, I will never think UNC has a poor stadium. That place looks like a high school gym with a green floor.

Altitude is nice for covering games, but would it kill them to do just a tad of research before the broadcast? Mispronunciations galore and it is the University of Northern Colorado, not Northern Colorado University. Maybe read up on the rules of football a bit? The play-by-play was ok (KFKA’s is better) but the announcers seemed to have little technical knowledge about the game. I do have to say the color analysis was good, and sometimes exactly what I was thinking.

Refs – Where did they find these guys? They could do with reading up on the rules of football too. Not that they made bad calls, rather they seemed confused the whole time.

PS - What the hell is with that smock that Dowining is wearing??

Good lord man, cant you wear a polo and tuck it in??
