5. What in the world happened to Andy Birkel?
Knee surgery. Sometimes players get back what they had, sometimes they don't.
Damn, I was expecting some big things out of him. We could use a playmaker on the edge. Doesn't Vincent Jackson have a brother???
Plus our QBs suck, he can’t catch the ball if the QB can’t throw it to him.
Just watching the replay on Altitude, here are my thoughts.
Offense - Sucks
Both QBs are terrible. Woods is our best player. Chesla maybe. Luckily, other than VG running into his own blocker, mistakes were at a minimum. The coaches need to look at the "Down and To Go" part of the scoreboard. A 3 yard pass on 3rd and 8 is not going to get it done. The running game looks ok, because of Woods. The passing game can’t complete anything over 5 yards.
Defense - Better than our offense
The D actually looked ok to me. They held ISU to 13 through 3 quarters. They also did well in the red zone, particularly when VG coughed it up on the 7. They are definitely young, but I think experience will show this group grow. I think they were also hampered by play calling. A lot of sets that did not match the down or offensive formation. They only started to give up scores in the 4th, and at that point, they had been on the field for 27 of the 45 minutes of the game. If the offense had put together a sustained drive or two before the 4th, I think the D would have not given up as many in the 4th.
Special Teams - Bah
Good kick returns, ok coverage. Too many penalties.
Other
Having seen Holt, I will never think UNC has a poor stadium. That place looks like a high school gym with a green floor.
Altitude is nice for covering games, but would it kill them to do just a tad of research before the broadcast? Mispronunciations galore and it is the University of Northern Colorado, not Northern Colorado University. Maybe read up on the rules of football a bit? The play-by-play was ok (KFKA’s is better) but the announcers seemed to have little technical knowledge about the game. I do have to say the color analysis was good, and sometimes exactly what I was thinking.
Refs – Where did they find these guys? They could do with reading up on the rules of football too. Not that they made bad calls, rather they seemed confused the whole time.
