Wow. Where to begin. Can a true "hornutluver" really call this year's team a disgrace? A disgrace is when African Americans were hosed down by police during the Civil Rights Movement. A disgrace is someone who sells out their country in exchange for cash. A disgrace is Tanya Harding and her boyfriend trying to take the competition out at the knees. A disgrace is when former Hornet football players throw rocks off an overpass to hit on coming traffic.
Do you really think this year's Sac State football team has done anything to bring shame, reproach, or dishonor to them or the school? This football team has only lost to a Mountain West team that a Pac 10 team beat in the waning seconds. This football team lost to Cal Poly who showed that their #12 ranking in the nation was legitimate.
It is the fans bringing all the negativity who are wearing the rosy colored glassed with unrealistic expectations. Sure they finished 6-6 last year, but take a look at those wins. One was against a Div. II team, an NAIA team, and 3 wins against lower tier Big Sky teams, and frankly a win against that school across the causeway who was in a down year.
Your posts make it sound like you have an agenda against Sperbeck. You write, "both are so full of themselves (Sperbeck and Tisdale) and major control freaks..." or "he doesn't know what his needs are and he is over his head."
Besides your hiding behind a pseudonym and taking cheap shots at the head coach, Sperbeck's crime, I guess, is that he raised expectations by saying the Hornets could compete. He didn't say win a Big Sky title, but compete against the conference's upper tier. We haven't even played a Big Sky game, and people are "panicking."
Sperbeck from the Sac Bee, Sept. 17; "There's no doubt in my mind the program's getting better," Sperbeck said. "The level of competition is better out here. The level of players all-around, from the first guy on the roster to the last guy, has improved.
"We have to get that going over a period of time. This year could be a year where you may see it. It may be another year. I would not be surprised if this team jumped up and had a lot of success."
He sure sold me a bill of goods.
As for this whole youth argument, it is not about youth but experience. Even hornutluver acknowledged that we have an "unproven LB corps" and that the receivers are still trying to "gel." In the running game, you have your top leading rusher out for the year. Wilkins, a junior, missed almost the entire season last year. That leaves you with Dailey, a sophomore, who played a limited amount his freshman year at UW. Next in line is Sam McKowan, a freshman. You lose your top wide-receiver, and bring in two JUCO transfers who are trying to make the transition to 1aa. If you want offer up constructive criticism, and it has been done, Jason Smith has not been sharp or in tune with the new receivers.
One of the new linebackers is a converted safety, and the others are inexperienced. You lose your star safety at Cal Poly before the 2nd half is over and his replacement gets burned.
The point is, despite the euphoria of beating that school across the causeway last year and finishing 6-6, it was a team that wasn't that good. It isn't the end of the world. It is definitely not a disgrace. We still have all the conference games ahead of us. No need to panic.
