It's time to move on

I think it is pretty clear it is time to move on and put the Scott Downing era to rest. The question is will Jay Hinrichs do the right thing here and send Downing packing? To me, it is not a difficult decision at all.

- First and foremost Mr. Downing is a laughable 3-31 (yes that is a winning percentage of 8.8%). I know I am already penciling in a loss next week at PSU but I feel pretty good with my prediction there.
- Downing is in the last year of his contract. No way Jay can give him a long term deal so what's he going to do give him a one year deal and make him a lame duck anyway? Jay gave Downing his chance this year and he blew it.
- Attendance is a joke. I don't know what the average attendance was, but I bet it was a low for the past 10 years.
- No one is mad. Everyone has basically given up. This is a big alarm. Just look at this site as an example - no one cares.

The big issue is Jay fired a long time coach that won more games in his last year than Scott Downing has won in three years. Downing was Hinrichs first big move. Maybe Jay won't want to admit it was a mistake.

Allright, Jay Hinrichs I for one am waiting - your move.

A quote from Jay Hinrichs when Downing was hired. The first sentance sums it up pretty well.

"Coach Downing has the ability to change the perception and change the culture here at Northern Colorado," Hinrichs said. "He will build with upperclassmen, bring in great recruiting classes and definitely outwork the competition. This job does not come without some great expectations; we know that Coach Downing is the best person for this program at this point in our reclassification."

Also there is a bottom line business decision that needs to be made here. Part of the athletic department's budget is based on football ticket revenue and when the team is horrible and nobody shows up the budget suffers.

Also, look at it from an outsiders perspective, what other program in the country would keep a coach that went 3-31? Kansas State just fired their guy after 3 years and he's gone about .500.

And I still don't buy the oh it's the transition excuse, Central Arkansas is only in their third year at this level, 3 years behind UNC, and they just won the Southland Conference so another example that it can be done if you have your shit together which we obviously don't.

I'll say again what I said months ago, I think Bryan Applewhite should be brought it.

Well he certainly got one thing right, Mr. Downing has changed the perception of the program. We went from respect to laughing stock. Well done!

Agree with almost everything you said here. Not sure if Applewhite is the right guy, but I do hope that we can start debating who the next coach should be soon!! :P

Wow, aren't we outta the loop? Downing has already signed an extension through next year so save your breath. As for the whole Central Arkansas idea. They have funding, funding, and more funding. Coach Conque at UCA is a great guy but he is no better coach than Downing. He just has more cash to work with. UCA has donors and alumni who actually donate money and not slanderous filth online. And dont respond with "I donated 5 years ago" or some crap like that. Unless it is a substantial amount and not $10 at a raffle, you are not a donor. Keep your $10. Unless your name is Vic Nottingham and you come to practice every week and have nothing but high praises for the coaches and players. UCA has about 8 Vic Nottinghams. UNC has one. You guys need to quit complaining and accept that no one would take such a low paying job as coaching at UNC. High School coaching staffs are collectively paid more than UNC coaches are. So stop acting like we are big time and throwing around names like Barnett, or anyone else. If you have heard of them, they wouldnt coach at UNC. So just shut up!!!

I would love to know where you got this information about Downing being extended. Also, why all the antimosity for fans who are understandably outraged and/or apathetic about a 3-30 record?

Wow. Wouldn't our basketball and other sports programs be failing if it was just about money? They all seem to be doing really well.

I happen to know some people inside the athletic dept and, yes, the coaching staff will be returning. As for the success of the other programs (ie Basketball), no program has as many roster spots to fill as a football program. It may not appear to be a big deal but each of those players requires equipment, uniforms, work out equipment, etc. A roster of 95 is a little more difficult to support than a roster of 12. The current weight room (broom closet) suffices for a basketball team but does not function for a football program at any level. Yes, there are plans in the works to have a new weight room facility created as well as locker rooms (both of which improve morale, strength, and recruiting). Do improvements need to be made to the staff? Absolutely. But until they can pay for such improvements, you are stuck with the beligerant Dennis Darnell (probably the source of much of the problems on offense). The players have expressed that they do not want to get rid of Downing because A. They do like the man B. It would set the program back and C. They feel that much of the blame rests on their shoulders and not his. Show up to practice sometime and see the dramatic changes this program has taken in the past few years and it will show that another year is warranted.

Scott Downing is that you?

I'm all for a pro Downing argument on here. It's too bad there isn't more but I think a lot of the people on here don't have any sort of access to what goes on behind the scenes. That is another issue that information is not provided to the fans, we are in the dark regarding 99% of what goes on within the athletic department and that's created a riff that has effected support... and donations... So the question to be asked is why does Central Arkansas have 9 times the support UNC does? It's not a larger school, it's not better academically, hell, 20 years ago they were an NAIA school with 4,000 students so for some reason UNC has alienated a lot of potential support and there are probably a million reasons why.

Where have you been hiding Jayhawker? Or better yet, what football team have you been watching?
UNC has more than one Vic Nottingham (and the one we currently have is a GREAT guy by the way) but they are waiting for a little more than bad excuses before they donate. Back in the day, when UNC saw a lot of success, they had the same weight room, and less money. So, I find it hard to believe that UNC sucks due to money concerns exclusively. What we need is a "change of culture" and a "new direction". You guys remember, the same thing that was promised when Jay shit canned our last winning coach.
Winning is attitude, and this team has a losing one.

Jayhawker is correct. The players do like Downing.
Hell, if I had a coach that didn't PUSH me to be my best, I would probably like him too. We need to move past the "gosh, golly gee" mentality that seems to have been instilled in this team.

I tell you what, when we start being ranked on how hard we practice, and the game is no longer relevant, I'll say we need to keep the staff. From what I see, what they do Monday through Thursday, ain't translating to the field on Saturday. That's called shitty coaching.

Ursa, you've hit the nail on the head with this one. To paraphrase Allen Iverson: It's easy to sum it up if you're just talking about practice. We're sitting here, and we're 3-30 over three seasond, and we're talking about practice. I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice. Not the game thatreally counts but we're talking about practice man. How silly is that?

Now I know that "you play like you practice" and all that but I'm not shoving that aside like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I honestly do but we're talking about practice. We're talking about practice man. We're talking about practice. We're talking about practice. We're not talking about the game. We're talking about practice. When you come to the game, and you see the Bears play, you've seen the Bears play right, you've seen them lose constantly, but we're talking about practice right now.

I want you guys to show up to practice so you guys can pull your heads out of your rear ends and realize that Downing doesnt call the offensive or defensive plays. So making statements about his play calling ability are assenine. I want you to come to practice to realize that Downing does push his kids and only has that "gee golly" image in the press. I want you to come to practice to see that no one has stopped fighting for every inch that is gained. You all have excuses for why the losing continues. You all have no clue.

No, I would say we all have pretty valid points, the coaching sucks.

jayhawker said:

No, but we have a pretty good hypothesis, the coaching sucks.

jayhawker said:

No, but he hired the coaches that do. And the coaching sucks.
Jaybird...are you starting to see a pattern here?

Where do you get all your Central Arkansas info from? Start showing some links or I smell bs as in you don't know what you're talking about.

If the practices are SOOO great, and Downing pushes the kids, why has the team regressed over the season? Aren't they suppose to get better? Not worse. Downing might not call the plays, but he must have say in it, shouldn't he step up and say hey this doesn't work, I mean he is the head coach after all right?

LOL! You happen to know some people. Tell them that the fans and alumni want a new coach.
