VIKINGS PULL HUGE UPSET: Portland State stunned seventh-ranked Gonzaga 77-70 last Tuesday, the Vikings’ first win over a ranked opponent in school history. PSU entered the game 0-11 against ranked opponents since the school brought back men’s basketball during the 1996-97 season. Gonzaga entered the game with a 55-2 all-time record at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

It was the first victory by a Big Sky team over a ranked opponent since Montana beat No. 20 Nevada 87-79 during the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. It snapped a 31-game losing streak by Big Sky teams against ranked opponents. The streak started when Montana lost to seventh-ranked Boston College in the second round of the 2006 NCAA tournament. Big Sky teams went 0-12 against ranked teams in 2006-07, and 0-16 in 2007-08. League teams had been 0-2 against ranked teams this season prior to the win.

Portland State is now 27-7 in the calendar year of 2008. The Vikings have won 15 straight home games dating back to last season. The Vikings have won 14 straight Big Sky home games, one short of the school record. PSU can tie that record on Jan. 8 against Weber State.

The Vikings have beaten teams from Conference USA, The West Coast, the Big West, the Mid-American, and the Southwestern Conferences this season. The Vikings can gun for another victory against a ranked team on Monday against No. 19 Baylor of the Big 12 Conference.

Weber St. vs. PSU. This is a great match-up. Should be a real barn-burner. WSU always has a good team and they have the tradition. Looking forward to the game. Has anyone analyzed how PSU matches up vs. Weber St.?

WSU Starters

F-3 Kyle Bullinger 6-6 210 Freshman Mountain View, WY (8.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3P% .392)

F-12 Nick Hansen 6-4 200 Junior Pocatello, ID (8.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3P% .368)

C-40 Steve Panos 6-8 240 Junior Salt Lake City, UT (11.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg)

G-33 Kellen McCoy 5-6 180 Senior Norman, OK (12.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 3P% .424)

G-1 Damian Lillard 6-2 180 True Freshman Oakland, CA (9.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.1 apg, 3P% .382)

Season Stats:

Points per game 66.9
Field goal pct .468
3-point FG pct .377
Free throw pct .696
Rebounds per game 31.6
Turnovers per game 16.5
Steals per game 4.4
Blocks per game 3.1

WSU has 2 seniors - Davis, McCoy

Davis our small forward will lead the 'Sky in blocks and dunks - lead the conf in blocks last year.

McCoy - same size as J. Dominguez, good FT shooter, 3 pt shooter, can drive it in

Lillard, freshman pt guard likely will be fresh of the year, had career high 18 pts vs UNC

Bullinger you could say is a young Phil Nelson type, good 3 pt shooter but really should be a 3. Not a very tall starting lineup this year.

Panos is a 2 yr starter, pretty solid, lead the team in scoring and rebounds til recently.

8 man rotation - Morris, Mahoney, and Davis off the bench.

Mahoney is a freshman F/C, Morris is a soph F/C

Looks like the 2 teams are physically sized identical. Also, scoring for both teams is well balanced. Should make for an interesting game. I hope PSU is rested after this road trip so that they can bring a lot of energy.

I totally agree. He should benefit from matching up with Panos.

I thought PSU should have gone to Jamie vs. NAU. I know NAU was running a packed in zone but it did open up a bit during the course of the game. When we get Jamie involved more in the offense, we are much more productive.

Couldn't agree with you more. Any offense's potential is stifled by being one-dimensional. Jones is the only inside threat, and unfortunately for the Vikings, he's only 6'7". He can be effective against most defenders, so it's up to Bone and Geving to make sure the ball handlers get it to him.

I suspect it will take ten years to get that place to not smell like stale smoke. ;-)

PSU Vikings lead Big Sky in scoring

So...this should teach us some humility for the rest of the season. Maybe the Viks can now focus on some consistency rather than walking around announcing they can't be beaten. ;)

PSU went cold at the wrong time and Bullinger had the best game he will ever have. I question the decision to give up on Jones, even if his right hand was heavily taped. Without him the team is completely one-dimensional.

Our weaknesses were exposed tonight. No surprise. I get the feeling from what I heard on radio that Jamie couldn't go full game no matter what. We will have to deal with our weaknesses for the rest of the conference season. We have no inside game. Neither offensively or especially defensively. Weber State continuously beat us off the dribble to the rim and we didn't have a Scott Morrison to prevent shots. This was a brilliant tactic by WSU's coach Rahe. The crap about how PSU was more athletic than Weber was exposed tonight. Weber beat us off the dribble to the hoop time and time again. Our most athletic players Waters and Murray were beat time and time again.

But let's get past it. I never for a moment thought we would go undefeated. We have no center. It was disappointing we would shoot so cold at home. We will just have to make it up. This team is flawed because we only have Jamie Jones and Julius Thomas in the middle. We will get beat again but let's see who's standing at the end of the season.
