Jason Smith out for 3 weeks

THR, is this from a reliable source? Was further injury sustained towards the end of the PSU game? I thought Jason looked good and was on the mend... This is a huge blow. There goes Duncan's RS and the back up situation is just as scary as it was last week.

If I'm correct, Smith's injury was an ankle injury? Surgery probably means it was a high ankle sprain. And that means it was most likely a surgery to place a screw between the tibia and fibula to hold the bones in position while the syndesmotic ligament heals. Once that heals you have to have another surgery to have the screw removed. If this is the case, we're talking season over for J. Smith.

This sucks.

It just doesn't make sense to me how surgery is all of a sudden necessary. If it was necessary at all, it should have been done immediately after the CSU game, rather than waiting 3 weeks. I thought he looked a little gimpy on Saturday, but I mean he played the whole game and looked close to 100% during the game.

Yes, it's reliable. You'll probably get confirmation today or Wednesday. He did injure his ankle and it may be from him coming back too early or wear and tear from the Portland game. In any case, he did undergo surgery yesterday and will be out for at least 3 weeks. My sources say they are "being optimistic" and saying he could be back by Montana. The only thing we can be sure of is we definitely won't see him or Mcleod for the next couple of weeks. Duncan will have to play with a chip on his shoulder for the next few games.

To each its own.

Im not doubting you, but I will wait to give my thoughts on the situation.....

I'm not saying you are. It's actually wise not to believe or be skeptical about things that someone says. Everything I get is from people who encounter or on the team, but I can't prove that to you either. Hopefully they'll put out something in the bee or on the site today. I don't know when the injury report is released each week.

College teams don't have to put out an injury report like the NFL.

What happened in the PSU game? The Sac and PSU game notes both stated that White would start; the league notes was mum. Yet the box score indicates that Smith played the entire game and White didn't play at all. In fact, even in the post-game report, there was no mention of Smith re-aggravating the injury.

What's happening here? Are the Hornets starting to keep secrets like Al? Normally, I'd agree with SHA about important stuff like this showing up in the SID's game notes, but now I'm not so sure. While we want to keep stuff from the opponents, if the SID continues to behave like Al, the press may start to complain. (OK, given the historic state of the Bee, that might not happen, but it's always a possibility. In addition, the league may have something to say about that, too.)

It was a gametime decision to start Smith. That's all it was SH. The school is not hiding anything, the coaches were hoping Smith had recovered to the point where he could start. And he did. But something must of happened during the game that caused a re-injury. It happens. There is no swirling controversy.

That would be worst case scenario Dr. Kadeezy... For what it's worth, I don't think it is worse case scenario this time but we will have to see what the doctors found.

I think this is a case of a player trying to be the tough guy and play through pain...Like I said a few weeks ago, Smith has a stress fracture in his ankle. I was actually shocked that he played on Saturday. I'm assuming he talked the coaching staff and doctors into thinking he would be ok...

Heard Evander has a torn meniscus? Could be wrong, either way, its bad news for sac. With wilkins and smith out it could be a tough one this week.

I hope that isn't true about Evander, the last I heard it was a hyper extended knee. Either way with Hillard and Croxdale and White at the controls we will still have a good shot.

I heard it was a hyperextension too. If it is a torn meniscus, he still might be able to play on it depending on what kind of pain he's in. I have a torn lateral meniscus in my left knee from a football injury, but was advised to avoide scoping it as long as possible by my orthopedic surgeon. Here I am today 7 years later...

Jason Smith did NOT have surgery on his ankle. He did have minor surgery, but it had nothing to do with his ankle. I'm not going to say what the surgery was because its private information, but I can assure you it was not ankle surgery. He will likely be ready for the Montana game. Don't forget we have a bye after this week at NAU so he has a couple of weeks to heal up.

Per the Sacramento Bee (which is not how I found out about it):

Sac State quarterback undergoes minor surgery

Sacramento State sophomore quarterback Jason Smith will miss Saturday's game at Northern Arizona after undergoing minor surgery on Monday, Hornets coach Marshall Sperbeck said Tuesday.

The outpatient procedure was not related to the high ankle sprain that kept Smith out of two games before he returned to throw for 307 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-31 victory over Portland State last Saturday.
