The game will be televised live on internet-based ESPN3. A year ago, Eastern advanced to the semifinals and won the title in 2010.

Located in Jacksonville, Ala., the Gamecocks are 11-3 overall and pounced Samford 55-14 in the first round on Nov. 30 after receiving an at-large bid to the playoffs. It will be EWU’s first-ever meeting with Jacksonville State, which finished 5-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference under first-year head coach Bill Clark.

Interesting, I wonder when was the last time someone has the possibility of facing two Ohio Valley teams back to back in the playoffs?

So, from what I am hearing from Jacksonville fans is that at the beginning of the year, they were playing really poopy, but have improved greatly. Assuming this is true ( ), overall statistics will not be accurate. So, I decided to analyse Mcneese and Samford.

Statistics are telling me Mcneese isn't very flashy.

#73 rushing defense
#75 Scoring Defense 28.3
#83 Total Defense 416.1
#50 Defense passing effic.
#24 Rushing offense 208.9
#32 Passing Offense 242.0

Samford was trash. Just pure trash. I didn't even bother copy and pasting their statistics. They didn't make the top 50 in any of the statistics above.

Mcneese didn't have a very tough regular schedule, but I'll still measure them as if they did have a tough schedule. Their defense ranks about the same as ours (ours is a little bit better). Our rushing defense is better and Jacksonville state is a run team. I think Jacksonville will score around the same as vs Jacksonville (21-28 points). However, there is no way Jacksonville can slow down our offense and there is no way they keep us below thirty points. I'd be surprised if we were below 40, actually.

McNeese did have a good schedule. They were literally pulling starters in the 3rd quarter against USF, faced a very good DII, and also went up against a healthy UNI, SELA, and they beat SHSU. McNeese was simply very inconsistent.

Samford didn't set the world on fire but also didn't have any bad losses.

A couple of notes regarding JSU:

Their defense is playing really well having given up a combined 92 points in the first half of their two playoff games and an average of 12 ppg. They had 11 sacks against McNeese last week, and they they are ranked 6th in FCS pass efficiency D.

On offense, it looks like they've platooned at QB most of the season, but I think the kid who has come on of late, Jenkins, is a dual threat and has rushed for over 900 yards while splitting time. They also have a stud running back who has 28 TD's on the season and has gained over 1400 yards. They are the 11th ranked rushing offense in FCS at 240 ypg, and the 20th ranked scoring offense at 36 ppg.

I've been one of the first to downplay the OVC in the past, and wondered about the 3 bids but JSU has proven that theory wrong at least for this season.

They matchup well with us and our a very dangerous team.

It wasn't that our play was all that bad... We just couldn't decide who we were...running team, passing team, or both. It was like, what offense do we run? Not that you brought this up, but the D2 win we had was against a very good D2 team in UNA. And the old rivalry we had when we were D2 brought back a lot of those emotions for their players... I think this caught us off guard, and to be honest the gap between the very good D2 teams and where we were playing at that time in the season had shrunk. I believe it's getting smaller every year. Our teams would probably compete very well against the lower-mid FBS teams, IMHO, and look what you guys did against OSU...and JSU in 2010 vs. Ole Miss?

Eli Jenkins has really come into his own and made this offense work. If our d-backs play like they've been able to play then I feel pretty good about keeping some of the big plays down. You guys are definitely worrisome for us, but we're peaking and becoming the team all of us thought we'd become. It should be a good game, and we're excited to be playing you guys... The NC in 2011 was impressive to say the least! We might have a decent showing of fans... Good luck this weekend, and please wear the black jerseys!!!

We were hoping that the JSU Marching Southerners would possibly make the trip...all 424 of them...but I think they might be bringing a 100 member pep band like they did against McNeese.

:thumb: ...the feeling is mutual! Should be a great game...

Browsed their board a little...looks like the majority of their posters have no clue about EWU's team or program. I doubt that's true of their coaches, though.

Def not, jsu coaches have probably been watching film since Sunday morning. This is crunch time. I think jus will probably take sdsu's approach on defense and try to force Quincy forte and Mario brown to beat them. Which they can. The EWU offense is a big play offense and if jsu comes out cold, stiff or flat... I think EWU will take some deep shots early. I think EWU's defense will try to make jsu beat them thru the air. I don't see this game being close at all.

Athletic all over the field but was impressed with the DB position in particular. QB definitely a threat. D will have to play a disciplined game... Nough said. Coining a new phrase for our offense, off-balanced balanced. :o Should be a great contest, may the best EWU team win. ;-)

First year coach from South Alabama program (??) doing a great job as this team has improved week after week.

JSU seems to be rolling along right now, not sure how they will do coming to Cheney though. Its a long trip, cold temps, and they are facing an offense like they have never seen before.

I'll admit I know nothing about them and think this will be a big win for EWU...

Hopefully we will see Towson win Friday night and EWU win Saturday so we can host a semifinal in Cheney!

They did play EIU who is second in ypg passing and Jacksonville who is 8th. Not sure if their scheme is similar to EWU. Like you I think JSU can agree we would both rather see Towson win over EIU for a lot of reasons, home field amongst them.

Garrapolo gets that ball out in a hurry.

Jimmy will be making a nice backup in the NFL next year, and who knows...he could get a shot with some playing time. He's a stud for sure...

Good press conference with JSU Coach Clark and players. About 15 min. Like to leverage the "us against the world" mentality.
