Just Sayin' : Jake Heaps seeking transfer from BYU

Him going to Cal would suck. Hopefully he doesn't want to sit out a year and is interested in us! He would be an excellent QB for us with the veteran WR we have.

Heaps was a top 3 QB in the nation coming out of Skyline. The kids a stud. The BYU offensive scheme has changed a bit since he's got to BYU. He had an awesome Freshman season last year including offensive MVP in BYU's Bowl Game. He had a down year this year and lost his starting job.

Unfortunately,NCAA rules doesn't allow coaches to contact kids seeking a transfer. The kids have to contact the school. EWU did recruit Heaps out of high school fully knowing he was a top 3 QB in the nation and going FBS. Obvious question; does the kid want to sit a year to stay in FBS or play right away in FCS. Ya gotta think BLM winning the Payton award can't hurt our cause in his decision. However, that's a month away.

Rumor has it Heaps IS willing to sit out a year for the right program/opportunity. Sounds like WSU is perhaps on his list as well as Cal and UCLA.

I'd be willing to wager that Heaps isn't looking our way at all.

We have several players on the current roster that went to Skyline with him. Can they make contact? Has he used his red shirt year?

I'll shed a little light on the subject. Heaps didn't quit on BYU, they more quit on him. They went with a dual threat QB which is the option Bronco Mendenhall feels is better for his team make-up for the next 2 years. After that, it was in his best interest to part company, AKA BLM at SMU, so don't give me that he quit on the team story, not the facts, they quit on him.
As for where Heaps wants to go, big question, nobody knows, it's up to he and his wife now, who is from Tacoma. As per the news release, he would prefer a D1 school with a good fit,(preferably PAC-12) but if that weren't the case, EASTERN is his #1 choice for FCS schools, so we are not out of the mix by any means because he knows he can play with a high powered offense right away and not sit out a year, he's well aware of our returning WR corps and the #'s BLM put up the last 2 years. That's the best I can tell you all at this point, but the Eastern coaches are also aware and have his cell #.

...and let Jake know Eastern will have a very good offensive line next year to protect him with Forgette, Post, Miller, Butorac, and either Murphy, Worthington, or prop Gomez or Tevaga

Re: Gomez (6-3 310) Graham-Kapowsin, and Tevaga (6-3 290) Archbishop Murphy. I was going by the signing day article of 2/2/11 on go.eags.com where Baldwin said both were recruited as offensive guards. Gomez was a 4A honorable mention O lineman, and Tevaga was first tean 2A OL. Both also played defense in high school (Gomez was Everett Herald all area 1st team both OL and DL) so I guess could end up on either side of the ball. I don't know if either was even in school this fall, I heard Gomez was coming in winter quarter. I hope they are both here and eligible to play in 2012.

I don't know about Tevaga, but Gomez is an OG for sure.

Both are young and still carring baby fat , should boulster the O-line next year ! Hard to say which direction Baldwin goes next year, fast and furious with Adams or brings in another drop down ! BTW watching the Griz DESTROY NIU ! why why why not us ?

My understanding he is about as mobile as a fence post and Nelson adds another dimension which was key to BYU success. Mobility is extremely important in the QB play now. Why else is the wildcat becoming popular. Look at the two BSC teams in the playoffs and their QBs ,both very mobile. BYU has a dominate o line that will have several guys in the NFL and Heaps could not find receivers and made bad decisions, other than that he is an OK college QB. Well other than he had difficulty getting along with other players. This is from what has been posted on Internet articles.
If he was such an asset to the program Bronco would not be so glad to release him.
It is dangerous to catch a falling knife.

Heaps is a special kind of QB, one that doesn't come along very often. He is not a "problem" teammate. His only issue with the team was his ability to grab hold of it and make it his. That was more of a team problem than a Heaps problem. Heaps became a starter at 18 years old. BYU is a team full of older PSA's because so many of them have already been on their mission and returned. 24 year old men just don't get excited about 18 year old rah rah enthusiasm. He really is a good guy.

Sure, he struggled this year at times. Call it the "sophomore suck". If I was just 19 and just married I'd have other things on my mind as well :D . It doesn't mean he lost his million dollar arm and ability to win.

Clawman is right in that he's not the most mobile guy. He does see the blitz though and he does have a lively arm. With our receivers I'd rather see our QB throwing than running. I'd be just fine signing Heaps up right this second.

You can catch knives, you just gotta catch 'em by the handle. Seems we caught BLM that way and it worked out just fine.

Vitto is a dual threat, has very good mechanics, a hard worker, and has progressed well. IMO the starting position is his to lose. Spring ball will tell all.

Rumor is Heaps is in, coming, transferring - what have you, to EWU.

This may be a good get - another drop down that lost a starting spot, but at a higher level. That doesn't bother me so much. My concern is - what it's going to do to recruiting QB's at EWU. What kid (QB) is going to take an offer from EWU seriously after this? If I were a QB, I'd be quick to say "Thanks, but no thanks." to an offer to play QB at EWU, because I'm going to assume that we're always going to be quick to take the kids that aren't starting, lose their spot, etc. If we're going to turn into the UM of Washington - where "Dropdown U" becomes our slapsticky, snarkey moniker - kids that have other options are going to perhaps make different choices, or choose to not play at all.

At least BLM finished out the season at SMU - the fact that Heaps just up and quit while BYU is still practicing/playing - so he could transfer, shows all sorts of character. Or lack of it. Of course, a lot of it has to do with how parents are raising their kids these days.

Either way, January is just around the corner - we'll know for sure then.

I still like the dual threat type of QB, can you say Tebow? While a Vitto or Adams may not be quite as accurate, what they give up in passing efficiency, they more than make up for in running.
And as RTR said:

I do not know what is going on with our current QB's but there is more to it than passing %'s

I hate to sound harsh, but it's a dog eat dog world and you never know what you might have to compete against.

Heaps is visiting the University of Kansas (according to their rivals site) soon so I think someone is being a little to hopeful by claiming that he is coming to EWU.

Well, I hadn't heard anything about Heaps, but I hope this rumor is correct if for no other reason than the fact that it adds another quality athlete to the lineup. But I wouldn't be as quick to dub us "transfer U" like UM or something. Before Mitchell, the last transfer QB we had was Josh Blankenship back in 2002. Meyer and Nichols both came in as Freshman, so we haven't exactly been a program that has been dependent on transfer QB's to compete. If we do get a transfer, then fine. But it's not a given that the transfer will be the starter.....you have to earn it and at the end of the day the best player will be the starter. Going back to the great QB debate of Spring 2010, is there really any questions now over the decision of the coaches as to who the starting QB would be? The best player will start, whether he is a transfer or Freshman.

Where did you hear Heaps was coming to EWU?

That would certainly change the dynamics of next year's QB battle. One of the major recrutiing sites had him rated the #1 QB in the country coming out of HS.
