Just Sayin' : Jake Heaps seeking transfer from BYU

RockTheRed said:
Rumor is Heaps is in, coming, transferring - what have you, to EWU.

This may be a good get - another drop down that lost a starting spot, but at a higher level. That doesn't bother me so much. My concern is - what it's going to do to recruiting QB's at EWU. What kid (QB) is going to take an offer from EWU seriously after this? If I were a QB, I'd be quick to say "Thanks, but no thanks." to an offer to play QB at EWU, because I'm going to assume that we're always going to be quick to take the kids that aren't starting, lose their spot, etc. If we're going to turn into the UM of Washington - where "Dropdown U" becomes our slapsticky, snarkey moniker - kids that have other options are going to perhaps make different choices, or choose to not play at all.

At least BLM finished out the season at SMU - the fact that Heaps just up and quit while BYU is still practicing/playing - so he could transfer, shows all sorts of character. Or lack of it. Of course, a lot of it has to do with how parents are raising their kids these days.

Either way, January is just around the corner - we'll know for sure then.

Heaps would be a great addition to the team and he would have to compete with the other QB's as did BLM for the starting nod, but if Heaps did decide to come to Eastern I think it would be a great thing. Our latest Drop down QB brought us a national championship and Drop Down U like UM has done a pretty good job of buidling a program the past 20 years, I don't think they have to many complaints.

I think our QB situation, regardless of Heaps, will be promising as both Vitto and Adams have the ability to be very good.

Ranger, you said "Before Mitchell, the last transfer QB we had was Josh Blankenship back in 2002." In the spring of '03 a QB transfer from Oregon, Andy Collins from Zillah, came in to try and win the QB job. He ended up behind Erik Meyer and Skyler Allen. He then transferred the following fall to Occidental College where he had a stellar career and went on to play indoor football and this summer died of a heart attack.

Well Heaps is no longer an option. He's headed to Kansas.

Strange, Notre Dame's Crist just announced he was transferring to Kansas. I don't know why both would come.

I just don't see Kansas getting good under Charlie Weis. He couldn't get it done at Notre Dame with all the resources they have, now he goes to a school with no recruiting clout and scarce resources? Hell, Kansas was literally a few hours from losing their BCS status as recently as a few months ago.

Crist graduated from ND, so he's eligible to play right away and only has one year of eligibility left, whereas Heaps will have to sit a year.

Well, good luck to him. Weis couldn't win at Notre Dame, so I'm not sure how he's going to win at Kansas, but maybe I'm missing something.

We'll be fine, although we still need to bring in at least one QB this year, maybe even two. I'd like to see a HS kid come in as a RS and maybe a transfer that can compete right away. Recruiting seems pretty quiet right now.

On egriz under the heading "EWU quarterback situation" a Montana fan wonders who the next rabbit EWU is going to pull out of the quarterback hat. Here is one of the responses: "One way they get some of the guys they do is the fact that EWU has much easier academic requirements than both UM and MSU. That isn't a shot at EWU, just a fact based statement anyone can check out." If that is how we get our qbs which of the last four - Blankenship, Meyer, Nicholls, or Bo Levi - wouldn't have qualified academically for admission to the University of Montana?

I have to chuckle a little every time I read that kind of stuff. Sure, UM is a little more selective academically, but this is something Griz fans like to overplay quite a bit as an excuse for why we might get a certain kid. The reality is that EWU is a regional university, it is what it is, but the school actually ranks higher academically than several schools in the same category to include schools like Weber State, Boise State, etc. To say that any of our QB's we have had in recent history wouldn't have gotten into UM is a biiiiiiiiiiiiiig stretch.

Maybe they should worry about the type of kids they are recruiting instead of worrying about whether or not our kids could get accepted to their school. what a silly argument.

This is obviously just an opinion piece and who knows whether or not he's even considering transferring. But I do wonder if Nick Montana would consider coming in to compete for the starting Qb job. He's not going to get to show his skills as a highly recruited HS Qb playing behind Price at UW. He has seen what our receivers can do when we played them this fall and this offense is a Qb's dream.

I am confident at who we have right now and I'm not getting my hopes up for any transfers after RtR said Heaps was coming in, but we need depth at QB and are very inexperienced there. We need to sign a HS kid, and, in my opinion, a transfer with experience who can come in and compete right away.
