Kjar Staff Rumors

The word on KSL is that Coach Whitt is taking Jay Hill with him to Michigan. Interesting!?!?
Honestly, that’s great! BYU and U of U fans are spoiled. BYU fans were pissing and moaning for Lavell Edwards to retire for many years before he did in spite of all he did for them. Now a lot of U fans wanted Whittingham to retire early as well.

Hill can get a good pay bump and if they do well at Michigan, be ready to take over for Whittingham when he retires. Sitake leveraged Penn State for a nice extension…so Hill wasn’t going to be able to take over anytime soon.

I bet BYU and U of U start slipping back from 10-2 records to 7-5ish as Hill was the reason behind Sitake’s latest success. When Detmer was the OC (forget who was DC) BYU struggled to beat Portland State the year Weber State hung 80 on them.

Time for karma to bite back!

Does anyone know if Kjar plans to be the OC as well as head coach?
I would imagine that would be best for him at least in the sort term. Could certainly help his adjustment to coaching at the collegiate level. Especially with everything that entails the head job position in today’s college football. It is truly more about being a CEO than coaching

I certainly hope not. I feel that it would be a huge mistake and get him off on the wrong foot. He can be as involved as he wants, but he needs the 'big picture' view. He needs a layer between him and all of the O assistants.

It was a mistake made by Mental & it would be a mistake by Kjar absolutely!

Standard-Examiner today stated Kjar will call plays as OC. I agree it would be better to have a separate OC, but Hill was the DC and honest to God could have done just as well if not better if he called offensive plays instead of Schramm, Hammer, or Mental.

Defense was never better than when Hill was DC. It’s been proven by Hill it can be effective. I think Mental would have done better if he hired an OC, but he thought he was an offensive genius. It ultimately cost Mental his job vs bringing in a better OC. It’s definitely a risk, if it doesn’t work out, Kjar may need to adjust and bring in an OC if the offense is flat. I think he will do better than Mental right from the start…but time will tell.

Fowler as DC a big jump. Pretty limited coaching experience.
It’s a definite risk for sure! Hopefully, he learned a lot from Hill. Experience can be overrated…look at Schramm, plenty of experience but no common sense, lest we forget the Maine playoff game where after a first successful drive with passing, he insisted on running against an eight man box. The two called wildcat plays in a row was a perfect summary of him.

With FCS, you usually always either get experience heavy failed coordinators or inexperienced up and comers. I like the move vs status quo. I think the team needs a big shakeup to bring some life back into it.

When moving from HS football coach to Division 1 football it is absolutely imperative that the head coach choose coordinators who have extensive college coaching experience. As a first time CEO he needs to focus on developing the skills he needs to succeed.
