Looking into the transfer portal

As we are probably all waiting for sports to come back, took a brief look into the transfer portal. I know Weber is looking at mostly JUCO transfers but found a few D1 guys who could be worth the 'Cats taking a look at.

The recruits that are the most visible are the HS and JC kids. We can find them on a few recruiting sights. The D1 and grad transfers are, most often, not known until they are announced. From what I have seen, there are probably 10X more of that variety we are going after. The problem with those kids is that hundreds more of them are added to the portal every month between now and summer and some will enter the portal as late as August or September. Getting those players on board is a much longer process. I've watched teams like Syracuse and Gonzaga go into July with only 8 or 9 scholarship guys on their roster. We have missed out on some really good players in the past because we were full up and had no openings. This year the plan seems to be to continue to talk to these guys and make sure that we get the best possible. It may well be that we don't have a full roster until mid summer or beyond. :coffee:

How about a Utah kid... https://www.deseret.com/sports/2020...ll-utes-center-matt-van-komen-transfer-portal

"Matt Van Komen, a 7-foot-4 freshmen center on the University of Utah basketball team, plans to enter the transfer portal, according to several sources.

An all-state player for Pleasant Grove High School, Van Komen earned first-team all-state honors after averaging 16.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.0 blocked shots per game in 2017-18."...

I saw that. I'm sure that we will be looking into his situation. I also know that there are some other big men/transfers we are looking at. I don't see us taking more than one transferring big man. I say that because of the number of big men we already have. However, if the player is good enough, I'm sure we would find a way. Guards and wing players seem to be our biggest needs right now.

Heard from a source that we are looking at 6’9” grad transfer Dontay Bassett from the University of Florida and he has some mutual interest in coming to Ogden.

Let’s just hope a lot of Wildcats Basketball fans haven’t entered the transfer portal.

Bassett committed to us today. He is a high major drop down player who will have an immediate impact. Four more to go.

This one looks like there is some potential. 6 foot 9, 236 lbs. A three star recruit out of high school, but he never got much playing time and as a result did not put up much in the way of numbers. His best game as a Gator was in 2018 against #12 Auburn, he had 12 points and 6 rebounds in 24 minutes. He averaged less than 7 minutes a game in 2019. WSU needed help in the post, I hope this guy fits the bill. Just one year as a grad transfer though, but he seems really motivated.

The big kid from the UUs landed at St Mary's. Probably a good choice for him.

The transfer portal is growing bigger every day and is littered with high quality players. It's also littered with guys who will end up at D11 and D111 programs. It really shows just how much of a gamble recruiting is. I also suspect that many of the freshmen in the portal will end up at JCs and try to re-enter D1 the following year.

I still haven't seen any of our transferring players land spots yet. :coffee:

Really only Dima has the potential to continue at a DI. None of the other guys, right now, are DI. I feel bad for Barns because he doesn't have the JC option.

I feel Randy has offered a lot of guys and we will slowly hear about them as the summer goes on.

Darn, opened this because I thought it was Old’s annual diatribe on how Weber was going to win the Big Sky! :blah:

Looks like WSU signed a DII scorer, Darweshi Hunter. 6 foot 5 wing scorer, averaged 20.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.9 steals as a freshman. Shot 51% from the floor at 38.5% from 3. Second highest scorer in all DII. Scored 35 points against the Wright State team that thumped WSU last year. If he can continue to improve and play good defense this could be a great pickup. I remember Davion Berry as a great DII pickup for WSU a couple of years ago. I hope this kid pans out.

After a couple of rough recruiting years, I'm hoping these spring additions are going to help right the sinking ship that is Wildcat Basketball. According to the Hein (does he realize that fans buy subscriptions? Maybe he should calm down a bit on twitter and facebook and become an actual journalist...impartial and neutral.) all four additions (Brown, Bassett, Porter, and Hunter) are eligible immediately. I thought that Hunter played last year and since he is leaving a DII to come to a DI he has to sit for a season. I'm definitely not complaining that he chose Weber. I'm really glad he did chose Weber (WELCOME DARWESHI to WILDCAT COUNTRY), but why is he automatically eligible. Just curious. Being eligible is also awesome for the Cats. Definite win win.

Looks like Randy is trying to add an entirely new rotation.

I think that the rules for eligibility after transferring have changed over the past few years and may get a big change again in June.

Anyone else feeling optimistic? We have gotten some big upgrades!
I'm always optimistic. However, we lost quite a bit off of a team that performed poorly last year. Yes, it is good to see the fresh talent coming in, but they haven't done anything yet. I want to see them play a few games before I say if they have improved or not. Also, there is still a lot of recruiting left to do and one or two players can make or break a team. I also want to see what new set plays or offensive systems they bring in to match their players. That can make a difference as well. I'm in the wait and see boat. :coffee:

I am optimistic that these appear to be moves of desperation. It appears that Randy is feeling a little heat and facing a relatively bare cupboard. These may appear to be upgrades but how are the pieces going to fit together and who is the leader. Rahe's teams are known for great chemistry. Reminds me a little of Randy's first season but I am not sure Kozak can step into the role Patten did. I am really surprised not hear any news of changes in the assistants.
