M: vs Dominican

My app isn't updating the score but it sounds like the team is sleep walking.

Hornets need to pick it up.

What's the score?

Dickson fouled on a 3 attempt. He sinks these and the Hornets should squeak by this powerful Dominican team.

Sleepwalking is generous. This team is bipolar.
I disagree, I think we just don't match-up well with Dominican.

And Dickson sunk the FT's. Hornets will probably get fouled from here on out.

Fans leaving look thrilled
Can't blame them. At least with a game like this I don't have to hear McElroy begging people to come out and see this good Hornet team.

Veteto fouled on a jam and hits the FT. 71-61 59 seconds.

Hornets give up an easy dunk. 71-63 46 seconds left.

Uh oh, Dominican bombs in another 3.
McKinney almost give up the ball. :ohno:

I gotta say the Hornets sure struggle to inbound the god damn ball. WTF Katz!
73-66 Sac up with 26 seconds left. Hornet ball...if they can in bound it.

Final: 77-68 Hornet win. Hornets escape at home against D2 powerhouse Dominican. Dickson was a beast and was the only reason why we won. God we are gonna miss him next year. Poor defense, poor play inside until the last couple minutes of the game, poor energy, poor rebounding. Hornets were out hustled and out played for much of the game. I can't think of one good thing to say...actually good FT shooting, there I did it. Demps looked bad but he put up more points than Carbs could have dreamed of. I did like that he got a good amount of playing time. Quigley look alright. Veteto struggled for much of the game. Garrity and McKinney were ok but not great. Just an all around "meh" type of game.

Ugly game. Hornets won, I'll take it. Unfortunately, this does happen from time to time. Even the mighty team from Texas Southern took the #19 Colorado Buffs to double OT tonight. Shouldn't happen, does some times. No excuse, they will play better. The way this team plays, I wouldn't be surprised if they go nuts at Arizona St. and pull one out. Or they might get blown out, who knows. All I know is they play hard and that will continue.

Oh by the way, I saw the high school senior, Stutteville, (the kid that signed early two weeks ago), play last night. Had 14 points, 9 rebounds in the 1st quarter. Ended up with 33 points, not sure how many rebounds. The kid can play! He could help the Hornets this year.

Ok, it was a win and with the Hornets at 5-1 we can all be satisfied with a solid start. Granted it's against a very weak schedule, but 5-1 is much better than what we've seen in the past.

But I will say I'm beginning to be pretty concerned about Katz ability to develop players. Can anyone recall when a player came in as a Freshman (didn't play much) but really developed to be a solid player by the time they were a Junior or Senior? It seems that if you don't play your Freshman year under Katz, you'll either transfer or ride the bench. To me, player development is a key to building a program - not seeing a hint of this in the Hornets program.

Uh, Dickson for one. He has become a hell of lot more patient with his shots. Garrity is picking it up in his scoring while still dishing out assists.

Also, players like Rakocevic didn't want to work at it either. Heard he walked out of several practices last year. Sorry these kids are getting a free ride in exchange for 20 hours a week playing something they love. I have no problem with how this program is growing.

Lets see how the year plays out before all the arm-chair qb's continue to degrade Katz.

OH, I have pointed this out quite a bit over the years only to get my hand slapped. However to Katz’ credit has brought in better recruits as the years have progressed so naturally that would bump out some of the previously recruited players. Take Groom for example. Early on Katz passed on a redshirt for him and he was still forced to ride the bench even during a terrible season where it only made sense to give him playing time for development. Well that all changed once Garrity was brought in so now (unfortunately for Groom) his playing time will only be in mop up duty or in these easy D2 blow out games. Adding a talented player like McKinney to the roster doesn’t help Groom either. Fortunately for Katz, Groom has stuck around and has not left like the countless others.

Now we get to see this cycle all over again and see how Katz handles it. Demps/Barlett were passed up for redshirts this season so one would assume they would develop via a handful of minutes here and there. With the collapse of Carbs, it seems (hopefully) that Demps will see more playing time going forward and that will be good for his development in the long run. Barlett is still a head scratcher as I don’t see him logging many minutes this season and have no explanation as to why he wasn’t redshirted.

Up until recently Katz has been highly dependant on JC players, most of whom have been busts. There isn’t a lot of room for development for the type of JC players Katz has brought in and in most cases it felt like just a body to fill a roster spot. Dickson has been a pleasure to watch these past 3+ years and as of now is hands down the best player Katz has brought in and developed. In the past his shot selection was iffy but his raw talent overcame a lot of his mistakes. Now he is taking better shots (making most of them) and playing better on the glass and in the offense as a whole. He has also played well on the defensive end and is starting to rack up the blocks. Dickson is almost unstoppable so let’s enjoy it while it lasts because it’s going to take a miracle to fill that void next season.
