Was able to watch a replay of Maine v JSU this morning. Maine is pretty dang similar to Weber St. Maine’s D is tough against the run and they were able to force and take advantage of turnovers - including a few turnovers on downs. JSU’s starting QB actually got benched after two fumbles.
Maine’s O (at least for this game) was as follows: Run, run, throw fade. Run, throw fade, run. Throw fade, run, throw fade. Lots of fades and QB Ferguson is excellent at throwing them. He completed a bunch – and what wasn’t completed - was flagged for P.I. Maine even converted a fake punt - a la Jay Hill style.
Like many have already said, for Weber St to win …. Stop. The. Run. Period…. Then defend against the fade without fouling. I do think Weber St’s defensive backfield is a lot better than what JSU had to offer.
JSU did have some success with big passing plays early in the game. But they couldn’t run the ball. On offense – we need to run the ball, convert some big gains and most importantly…… take care of the ball. Maine can after the QB. I as well, think Weber’s team speed could be the difference on both sides. Should be a good game. Go Weber!
(BTW… excellent piece at halftime by ESPN on the Maine player who passed away – if you watch, get your tissues ready)
