Marshall Sperbeck FIRED!!!

Come now. You're speaking in the heat of the moment. I don't like tonight's results myself. But I'm not going to call for his head (or anyone else's) until I've calmed down. I just saw an important coach in my life get canned late last night with no explanation other than the nebulous "we're going in another direction." We might rationally argue for that next week, but we can't do that tonight.

The other thing to consider is where we are compared to where we were when Sperbeck got here. If you can't admit that we're tons better now than we were under Mooshagian, there's something wrong there. Sure, we've plateaued, and that MIGHT be a reason to make a switch. But even THIS year we won games that we wouldn't have even last year (i.e. SUU) after it SEEMED that we'd gone in the tank.

Overall, I'm willing to give Sperbeck one more shot at the playoffs before dropping the axe. The gulf between our current status and where we were after Mooshagian tanked what Volek had done is immense.

I agree with some of your points. However, the repeat mistakes by Sperbeck and his staff, especially against UCD, is especially alarming.

Admittedly, Sperbeck has improved the overall talent of this program the past couple years and his decision to finally give up the reins to the offense this season definitely shows promise. However, his teams still display lack of discipline, especially in key moments, and in-game decisions by the staff (e.g. the reverse pass today) continue to be a problem.

I'm inclined to agree with you that he should get one more year. If there's no improvement, I think it would be time to go in another direction.

This is one of the funnier things I have seen in a while. You are an emotional/irrational fan-antic you lack long term perspective.

This might be a good time for you to define to WHOM you're speaking. A simple quote job would do the trick. I don't see Buckeye being excessively emotional in THIS thread....

Regarding the coaching situation, what is Sperbeck’s contract situation? He isn’t going anywhere until it expires. We don’t have the money to pay for 2 HC’s. Also I don’t think he needs to go…yet. A lot returns next season and if he can’t get this program over the hump, then it’s time to look elsewhere. However on the short term (i.e. immediately) Sperbeck needs to evaluate his coaching staff and make some changes. He really has no choice here as the poor play and inability to get it done in the meaningful games the past few years means something has to change. If Sperbeck runs the same coaching staff out next season there is no reason to expect anything different than the 4-6 win seasons we have seen the past few years and at that point it will be time to show him and a lot of his coaches the door.

As far as the staff changes, it’s evident DaPrato is atop the consideration list. DaPrato has been on the staff for 6 years, the last 3 he has held the special teams role and has been the WR coach the entire stretch. There is more to it than just the embarrassing way his special teams units preformed in the Causeway. Stepping back and looking at it the special teams track record, it has been inconsistent. The kick coverage has been inconsistent all season as well as in past seasons. The 2011 kicking debacle that cost us multiple wins happened under his watch so he gets a fair share of that blame. I was high on him for some of the excitement he brought via the punt blocking and other unique quirks but if he can’t get his units ready to perform the fundamentals, he needs to go.

Also it worries me that none of the young WR’s look to be developing into a playmaking threat. Robertson has gotten the most playing time as the 3rd WR and he has failed to show any indication that he can step up and make the big plays. Not sure if this can all be put on coaching or if it is more of a recruitment issue, but there is cause for concern here. The WR’s need to get better heading into next year and there is little indication that their performance will be any different next season. Considering this is a pass first offense, something needs to be done to improve the WR play. Sperbeck and Peterson need to determine if that improvement comes via a new WR coach or more focus on better talent on the recruitment trail.

The other glaring area of failure this season has been the defensive secondary. Coach Robertson has been on the coaching staff for 9 years with the conclusion of this season and has been the DB coach for most of them. The Hornets are the worst secondary in the BSC this season and that is not good considering this defense runs a 4-2-5 set. I’m not sure if a change here is needed as the defense is vastly improved under Parker’s system, but the DB’s were constantly torched this season and the poor tackling compounded the problem. Given the defensive improvement the past few years I tend to think this was more of a talent issue rather than a coaching one, but everything needs to be evaluated to determine if any changes need to occur.

A lot of soul searching needs to happen on the coaching staff. This program has been so close to getting into the next level of success but the same mistakes and mismanagement continue to happen over and over again. Sperbeck has shown he isn’t afraid to make coaching changes when he deems it necessary so I trust he will identify and make any needed changes this offseason. At this point only time will tell if Sperbeck will look at taking a different approach into the offseason and into the 2013 season.

Anyone posting a Sperbeck should be fired thread after a loss is clueless/irrational/emotional.

VERY good point, SD.

I just read an article about Tennessee. They just fired Derek Dooley, but will have little cache with which to lure a new guy because they are nearly $4M in the hole due to paying bloated salaries to departed coaches Philip Fulmer and Bruce Pearl, among others. We REALLY don't need that kind of albatross on our backs.
