MBB Head Coach Hire

Figured I'd start a new thread but as posted by Hornet25, the MBB HC position is officially open. Given what is at stake for future conference membership, it's going to be critical for the next HC to get this program to a competitive level so I'm glad Wood isn't wasting time by waiting until after the Hornets are bounced from Boise. Moving into the Pavilion next season will help, but I'm skeptical on it's impact as a whole for this program. At the least the Pavilion is a step in the right direction.

Given Wood's proclivity to grab headlines, I think he'll use this as another opportunity to bang the drum and make a hire that garners attention. My guess is that this hire will be a gimmick hire and a name is hired over meaningful experience. An ex-NBA player or someone that can grab headlines would be my guess and it will be touted as a "transformative" move. I'm not a fan of this approach but given the downtrodden history of this program for most of the D1 era I'm not necessarily opposed to this kind of a move.

Thoughts?

Jim Les is an ex NBA player, so going that route does not necessarily mean no substance. The difference between basketball and football is that a football head coach CAN be a figure head if they are surrounded by great assistants. Basketball needs the coach to be competent across the board. Going just for headlines basketball could be a recipe for disaster.

With that said, Bobby Hurley is on the hot seat and I've been watching that one closely. Maybe he's beyond the reach of Sac State, but....who knows. I thought Marion was out of reach too.
